This was my first Joanna Schaffhausen book and I can't wait to dig into others. This was a fast-paced read that kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first chapter!
PI Annalisa Vega is hired by author Mara Delaney to investigate the primary subject of her book, Dr. Craig Canning. Does a good sociopath really exist? If Vega uncovers something more sinister behind Canning's behaviors, what will happen to Delaney's soon-to-be released book?
I predicted some of the twists about halfway through the book, but there were enough surprises to keep me guessing until the very last page.
Since I'm not familiar with the author, I didn't realize this was the fourth book in a series. I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to follow key story-lines. I'm sure I missed some more nuanced details, but this held up nicely as a standalone novel and I'm definitely adding the other books to my TBR list.
This was really great. I didn’t read the first 3 but enjoyed this one anyway. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Very solid entry into this series. I really like the characters this author creates and was pretty fascinated by the idea of the "good sociopath". I'm not sure all the logic about the ex-PI being able to access pretty much all the crime scenes as if she was still a cop were that accurate but it all worked in the service of the story. The family drama is nicely interwoven with the rest of the mystery and we've moved on from Annalisa's immediate family tangled web. Definitely will keep reading this series and author.
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope There is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked!
This was so, so, so good. I didn’t realize it was part of a series, but I didn’t feel lost at all. It was a riveting procedural thriller. I usually struggle with those, but the writing was seamless and it kept my attention from the get go.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the copy of All The Way Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen. This is book four in the Annalisa Vega series, and it will keep you guessing. I suggest you read the previous books, at least the first one, because they all build on each other.
Have you ever met a sociopath? Can they ever be ‘good’? Annalisa is faced with this question when she tries to solve a murder. The beautiful writing drew me in and kept me reading. As usual, Schaffhausen creates a well-defined cast of interesting new characters and the existing characters change and grow. Do not miss this series!
I loved this book . I felt it was well paced sand intelligently plotted. And keeps you guessing to the end . .it was a good book
I love Joanna Schaffhausen. Her lead female characters are my favorite. I especially love Annalisa Vega, who is the protagonist of the series in this fourth installment. This is the first where Annalisa is beginning her new career as PI instead of a police officer. In this one she’s asked to look into a death deemed accidental by the author of an upcoming book about “good sociopaths”. There is also a subplot about her newly acknowledged step daughter which manages to work into the main plot. If there’s anything that bugs me is Annalisa’s adherence to her suspicions of the murderer’s identity with little to no actual evidence as well as her willingness to skirt the law if she feels the situation demands it. There are a couple of plot points that I didn’t follow and some convenient lapses…. a trained cop/PI doesn’t notice security cameras? Someone very concerned about some else’s safety goes off-grid for a few hours which leaves them open as a murder suspect? I also felt that the ending wasn’t clearly tied up. That being said, I devoured this (as well as her previous novels) and will continue to do so as new ones come out.
Latest in the Annalisa Vega series. There are no books I will download and read immediately upon being approved besides Joanna Schaffhausen's. (Spoilers from previous books are part of this book's plot.) Anna has started her own business as a private investigator after leaving the police, and Nick's daughter Cassidy is becoming more a part of their lives as her mother's illness progresses. Anna's first job as a PI is to investigate a man who is being profiled by a psychologist as a "good sociopath," one who uses his lack of empathy to help others when performing complex surgery, but the psychologist is concerned because a woman was recently murdered in his building and it would ruin her book if he turns out to be a "bad sociopath." This was not my favorite of any of Schaffhausen's books. It was still good and absorbing, but the overall plot felt a little more predictable, not to the extent most of these kinds of books are but a little more than hers typically are, I guess. I'll still be waiting impatiently for her next novel though. 3 stars.
The fourth installment of the Annalisa Vega series is brilliant, thrilling, and propulsive!
Annalisa has taken over Sam Tran’s cases as she opens her PI firm. Her first customer, Mara, wants Annalisa to look into the recent death of a woman who fell from her luxury high rise apartment. It’s the same luxury apartment building her case study, Craig, lives - her case study being about the role sociopaths play in our society. On the heels of Mara’s book being released, she wants to make sure Craig, whom she’s dubbed a “good sociopath,” didn’t push the woman to her death. Annalisa once again comes face to face with evil and works the case in the only way she can - with grit and determination, stopping at nothing until she gets the answers she seeks.
I stumbled upon the Annalisa Vega series last fall and immediately loved it, quickly devouring the first three books in the series. I’ve enjoyed the character development of Annalisa and getting to know more about her family and her relationship with her ex-husband Nick and his recently found daughter, Cassie.
The fourth book left it open to a fifth book and I can’t wait for it! If you’ve not yet had the chance to check out Joanna Schaffhausen’s books, especially this series, it’s an absolute MUST!
This was such a good book! I loved the characters, and their story. The dialogue was realistic and enjoyable. I was very surprised by the ending!
This is the forth book in the Detective Annalisa Vega series! And what a great read it was!!
Is there such a thing as a good sociopath?! Detective Annalisa is very sceptical! But her very first client ever, Mara Delaney insists that some sociopaths are beneficial to society! Mara has written a book called the good sociopath centered around her sort of friend and neurosurgeon Dr Craig Canning! Dr Canning has saved hundreds of lives! Does it matter that he doesn't actually care about his patients?! But Nada has a bigger problem she thinks the good Doctor might not be so good! A young girl in the Dr apartment building has plunged to her death! Could the Dr have something to do with it?! She hires Detective Vega to look into things! This is where things get a little crazy! There were so many who done its in this book! Lol it was a fantastic thriller! I was hooked throughout the entire book! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! I can't wait for more! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I’ve read all of Joanna Schaffhausen’s books and I’m more and more impressed every time. Not only is her writing highly engaging, she writes with intelligence, creativity and sophistication that make her unlike any other author I’ve read. Her latest Annalisa Vega book exemplifies this. There are several intertwined stories that come together in the most startling way. I was completely engrossed in the story and shocked by the multiple twists. Fans both new and old will devour this series.
This one definitely had some surprises and twists along the way. It felt a tad slow at times, but it picked up. I was so happy to read it as an ARC copy. Thanks #netgalley.
3.5
This felt more formulaic than the previous installments, still fun, but a little...easy? Also, the deaths hit really randomly, which is weird.
Now married to her former partner and with a newly minted PI license, Annalisa Vega is trying to figure out how to live in this new reality without a badge. She opens a PI business and quickly gets a mysterious customer, the author of a book about how "good" sociopaths exist based on a local surgeon. The woman wants Vega to investigate a recent death of a young woman who lives in the same building as the surgeon. Although the victim's death is ruled an accident, the customer is concerned that her subject might be involved, and such a discovery would disprove the premise of her book. Vega begins by learning all she can about the brilliant and egotistical surgeon. Balancing her new married life and the newly discovered daughter of her husband, Vega has her hands full. Adding to the stress is her stepdaughter's search to find the mother who abandoned her girlfriend in hopes she will donate a kidney to save the young woman's life. It's an exciting read full of twists and turns. I can wait to see what happens next for Vega!
This is the 4th in the Annalisa Vega Series. I couldn’t wait to start reading this latest book in the Vega Series. Annalisa was a dedicated cop who was honest, hardworking, and intelligent, which makes you believe in her. She has decided to take these qualities and open her own private detective agency. Annalisa’s life is changing not only in her work but in her personal life. She has married her ex-husband again, thinking about starting a family and learning to adapt to having Nick’s teenage daughter in their lives. The first day her doors open she has been asked to investigate two cases: One an author who like Annalisa to find out whether Dr. Craig Canning killed a young girl in his building. The second one is to find the mother of Cassidy’s friend in high school who needs a new kidney. Both cases are challenging and have some surprise twists that will have you guessing till the end. When I thought that I had it all figured out, Schaffhausen threw a curve ball that changed everything at the end. This is what I love about Schaffhausen stories and what keeps me coming back to read more. I highly recommend this suspense book, so run out and grab a copy. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing company for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this 4th book in the Annalisa Vega series. This time Annalisa is trying to prove a charismatic man is a "bad sociopath" instead of the good one that's been written about. After a young woman falls from her balcony, Annalisa believes the man is responsible, but he proclaims his innocence.
This one had the twists that Schaffhausen is famous for, so once you are sure you have it all figured out, your view changes.
This is the fourth book in the Detective Annalise Vega series. Vega has quit the police force and is now a private detective. A young woman falls to her death. Is it murder or an accident? Vega gets involved with a sociopath. Is he good or bad. There is also a good bit about her home life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope there are more books to come.
