I read book 2 of DI Hollie Turner. I had to keep reading to find out what was happening with her investigation. It was very entertaining. And how incredible is what has happened to these young girls just in the seventies. The world has changed, but still...
‘The Fifth Girl’ is the third and final book in the Sister Sophia Brennan trilogy, and it goes without saying that the books should be read in book order to fully appreciate the tale and the characters. As with the previous books we have chapters from the past – namely the late-sixties to the mid-seventies and then present day, where DI Hollie Tuner and her team are still investigating the brutal murder of Sister Sophia Brennan.
This time, our past story is that of Sophia Brennan herself, and what a heart-breaking tale it is. We finally get some insight into why she treats the girls she is supposed to be caring for, at the mother and baby unit as she does. Hollie and the team continue to develop, and it has been pleasing to see the character progression throughout the three books. I personally felt that this instalment runs at a medium to fast pace – as all the pieces start to slot into place, and lead to a nicely tied up conclusion. There are some periods of repetition throughout the three books, and I do wonder if the trilogy could have been delivered just as well over two books. All in all, I have enjoyed all three books and am keen to see where Hollie and her team go next.
Love it, love it, absolutely loved this third and final part of the murdered nun trilogy! It was just as exciting to read, fast paced, deep and dark crime to solve just like the other 2 books. These books must be read in order to understand the plots, twists, turns
DI Hollie Turner and her investigation team done well, in solving the mystery of the murdered nun.
I really enjoyed the two timelines, and it created the perfect setting for the crime
I would love to hear more in this DI Hollie Turner series by Paul Teague
Thank you to Netgalley and Storm Publishing
Book 3 finale and what a ride. A kidnapped DCC, confessions, danger, death and so much more. Brings all kinds of emotions to the fore. An excellent, fast-paced ending. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily .
This third instalment tied up all the loose ends from the first two books. I did, however, feel that with editing, these three books would have read better as one book. I don’t feel that the average reader would like to pay for three books, when they could buy one. I really liked the main character and would like to read another book about her.
This book was more enjoyable than the second one. There was more going on to keep me interested. The chapters from the past in this book are from Sophia’s POV and what led her to become a nun. Her story was heartbreaking but not enough to make me forgive her for her terrible actions. Everything is spelled out to you so the killer reveal wasn’t a surprise and the ending felt a bit anticlimactic. I definitely think that with some good editing, this trilogy could have been cut down into one book. It’s over 1000 pages on one case with very few twists and a lot of repetition.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book is part of a series which I didn't realise at the beginning so I got a little lost. However, there is enough information early in the book to catch you up enough to still enjoy the read.
This is a typical crime thriller/cop drama with a little bit extra. To be honest I really enjoyed the 'past' story rather than the current day and it tied in nicely.
Would love to read a whole novel about the Mothers & Baby Home at the time and what led Sophia to being there in more detail!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in return for an honest review.
I read this with relief that the horrifying events on book 1 and 2 would come to some sort of resolution!
Centering around Sophia's past and her motivations for her more recent behaviour and attitude the book concludes the investigation into the death of the nun.
The rising body count is fitting to the story and the killers motives, the revelations come thick and fast and the conclusion is extremely satisfying, although I do feel this may have read better in 2 books.
DI Hollie Turner continues to lead the investigation into the murder of Sister Sophia Brennan, who worked at a home for unwed teen mothers. As she delves into questioning a new suspect, the mystery deepens, taking readers on a captivating journey that alternates between the present day with DI Turner and 1968 with Sophia Brennan before she became a nun.
Throughout the story, readers are provided insights into Sophia's past traumas and her journey to becoming the woman she was, adding layers of depth to the narrative. The complexities of Hollie's personal life, including the challenges when her children come to visit, are also explored, adding to the intricacies of the plot.
As the investigation into the home for mothers and children unfolds, the enigmatic appearance of a man in a red ball cap adds to the intrigue, leaving readers questioning how it all connects. The book maintains a medium-fast pace, fitting for the final installment in a series, and is filled with twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the somewhat anticlimactic end.
Finally the conclusion to the story of the teenage mothers whose babies were adopted. Hollies the detective cracks the case with help from her colleagues. Great book and good ending.
DI Hollie Turner is still the lead investigator for the murder of Sister Sophia Brennan who worked at a home for unwed teen mothers. As she begins to question a new suspect, our mystery grows deeper.
Again, this story jumps back and forth in time. In the present day with DI Turner and back to 1968 with Sophia Brennan before she became a nun. We learn of the trauma she went through and how she came to be the woman she was.
As the story progresses, we get to see how Hollie is when her kids come to visit. But as always things don't go as smoothly as she wishes. Again and again the man in the red ball cap keeps appearing. The investigation into the home for mothers and children deepens. How is this all connected?
This is definitely a medium-fast paced book which is befitting the final book in a series. There are still many twists and turns to be had which will keep you guessing until the very anticlimactic end. While the ending was wrapped up with a bow, it still felt like a let down.
The final installment in the Sister Brennan series and what a book. I was so engrossed in the series. I would advise readers to start at the very beginning as they can't really be read as a standalone. This 3rd book has DI Hollie Turner battling to find Sister Brennans killer but to also find one of her own. The back story tells Sophia Brennans story and its heartbreaking and gives an insight into her later behaviour.
I have loved all of the books and can't wait to see what life has in store for Hollie now.
A great Police Procedural novel
The final book in this trilogy and we finally have all the answers about who killed nun sophia Brennan and why.
A great read but be prepared to have all three ready .
4 stars
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this arc.
The final book in the trilogy was just as exciting and also heart rendering as the previous two. I was thoroughly invested in the story ...although I still feels its a bit cheeky sharing the stories over three books. Definitely recommend the trilogy to anyone that likes a good human mystery thriller with back stories spread over different timelines. Thank you so much to the publisher, netgalley and tha author for an arc.
I enjoyed the last in the trilogy about Detective Hollie Turner. An unputdownable book which pulled you in page after page..Great characters. Look forward to seeing what’s next for them. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
I requested this without knowing it’s the third installment in a detective trilogy. Some parts of the story were lost on me but this was emotional and impactful to say the least. I definitely need to read the first two and come back to this one when I have the background knowledge to fully emerge and enjoy this book as it should be experienced.
At this point I'm completely invested in the mystery and Hollie as well as her team. This one concludes the case of Sister Brennan and the Mother and Baby house. It's one stunner after another. I love how the author wraps things up in a satisfying conclusion for this case while leaving enough open for the main characters to continue the series. I'm excited to see where things go from here.
I have really enjoyed this trilogy of books, which I highly recommend, featuring Detective Hollie Turner. The plotting has been consistent and I was kept guessing almost until the end. The characterisation was believable, I had to feel sympathy for Sister Brennan and I loved the team dynamics. I really hope there is more to come from Hollie and I eagerly await more adventures! Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
The third in the Detective Hollie Turner series picks up where book two ended. This was a perfect ending to a really great trilogy series.
A great cast of characters in this well written story filled with plenty to keep you guessing throughout.
I hope there will be more investigations for Hollie and her police colleagues, as I'm sure there's alot more to all their stories.
Recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
This book is the conclusion to the nun’s death. There were a lot of surprises. It was a very twisty tale. The ending was perfect. The writing flowed smoothly. There were some very intense scenes. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
