Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC of this book.
I really enjoyed this set of novellas. They all were centered around St. Patrick’s Day and had milkshakes play a part. Each story had its own unique reason to enjoy it. I think that every story worked well when read together in the same collection. I would definitely read more collections like this.
This was a GREAT story to listen to! AWESOME narration! Great main characters. The plot was easy to find. The story was engaging and easy to follow. Will be purchasing this book. Shout out to Netgalley and publishing for allowing me to listen and review this story.
4 STARS!
I always enjoy a set of short stories — it’s a great way to be introduced to new authors and /or a new cozy mystery series . This books story is based around the theme of Milkshakes and st. Patrick’s day.
The first story is Irish Milkshake Murder by Carlene O'Connor. Tara and Danny are set to be married on St. Patrick's Day. Tara is set out for her unwanted combined hen and stag party on the Aran Islands. Off the coast of Ireland . During the ferry ride to the Aran Islands --milkshakes are consumed and a dancer from a dancing duo that hitched a ride last minute is murdered.
This was a fun ride and kept me guessing who the killer was -- it takes place during a storm as well so it felt cozy to read at home next to the warm fire. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did well -- but I felt inconsistencies from time to time with the use of Irish accent.
Next was --In Murder Most Irish by Peggy Ehrhart a customer at Hyler's diner dies after drinking an electric green milkshake. The victim is the husband of a local college professor and it seems there is no motive for killing him.
Another cozy read -- the food talk kept making me hungry though. I had a hard time getting invested in these characters though but the writing was quite good and I wanted to know the outcome.
Last is Mrs. Claus And The Luckless Leprechaun by Liz Ireland —St. Patrick's Day is coming to Santaland and iceball (a special sports game ) is in its height of popularity during this season. The Twinklers are hoping to finally win despite their best player, Crumble, being out of commission due to injury. When Crumble is found on the ice with a milkshake nearby Mrs Claus has another mystery to solve. This was nice Christmas / St. Patrick’s day mix and was well balanced with the themes . I enjoyed the characters , humour and magic . The story was over before I knew it. It seemed to solve itself but the overall story was fun.
The narrator did a great job on both the 2nd and 3rd short stories and bright the characters to life for me .
Thank you to Netgalley and Tantor audiobooks . This is my honest review .
I have mentioned before that I am not really a fan of novellas as they don’t do much for the storyline and they’re too short to really get invested in. However, Carlene O’Connor’s series, Home to Ireland, seems to be done and this is the only place that the stories continue so I requested this one. The last novella advanced the storyline significantly and on the off chance that the series isn’t over, I wanted to make sure to be up-to-date. This story was well-plotted and I did figure out who the murderer was early on but I was enjoying the descriptions of the Aran Islands so I kept following along. I hope there will be more in this series.
The other two novellas, however, were not for me. I stopped reading the Knit and Nibble mysteries because they were so bogged down with descriptions of EVERYTHING that it really got to be tedious. The mystery itself could have been two pages but I guess I really needed to know how the characters take their coffee (mentioned no less than 3 times in this short story). All the details take away from the actual mystery because half the time I can’t remember what it is they are investigating: murder or what’s on sale at the CSA. As for the Santaland story, I found it better than the last two novels I read in the series but I just can’t get into the series. I find the whole setting, while creative and inviting, a little cheesy.
I did not realize this was an audiobook of several different novellas, that have several previous novellas. It was hard to get into the audiobook as I did not understand the background to the book. The audiobook reader also sounded like they were robotic, and the flow of the book felt awkward. I would love to give the authors another try, as the content of the book felt well written.
