The Girl on the News is the third book I've read by Carpenter and I'm already eagerly waiting for her next...
It's a fast paced domestic thriller that you will not want to put down...I devoured it in less than twenty four hours it was that good!
Narrated by several POV and across different timelines Carpenter has woven a twisty plot full of suspense, intrigue and revenge.
It's enjoyable, entertaining and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Rosie (Jessie) Mcshane spent 7 years in a juvenile facility for the murder of her best friend. She has always maintained her innocence and is now living with her husband and 4 year old daughter, Mia. When a Facebook post is made saying that Mia is missing, Rosie rushes to the school to find her daughter perfectly fine. The false post is made again a few days later, making Rosie uneasy, and then Mia actually does go missing.
I finished this book in record time because it had me so engrossed. I felt bad for Rosie, just trying to live a normal as possible life after being wrongfully accused. There were a lot of things that bothered me about the story though. Please don't read further if you don't want any spoilers!
POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD:
I can't get over the utter and total incompetence of the police and anyone involved in the investigation of Lauren's death. A girl is sitting beside her best friend and she's automatically convicted of murder? No real evidence. Not only that, obvious evidence is completely ignored. I know people are wrongfully convicted all the time, but this was ridiculous.
I still don't understand what importance Liza's character had to the story. I understand who she was and her motives, but she really has no use.
The Facebook posts had me confused as well. Were they made on purpose so that when Mia actually did go missing, nobody believed it? The reason for them was never explained.
I can't even express what an absolute $#!+ person Marie (Jessie/Rosie's) mom is. She LIED for one child just to have the other convicted of murder???? This was mind boggling to me.
The end was my biggest disappointment. I still believe that it was Mark, and Billy was either just a big idiot or a slight accomplice. I feel like the whole issue and evidence against Mark was just ignored and thrown aside. Was this on purpose?
While I really appreciated the fast pace of this story, all the unexplained issues really made it a disappointment.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
BOOKWORMS REVIEW: Imagine sitting scrolling Social Media and you read a bulletin for a missing child...your child. But,your 4 yr old child is sitting right beside you! It can only mean one thing, someone has found out about your past and this is a warning, your daughter is in danger. Jessie/Rosie(same person, name change following a traumatic past) and Mark are happy in their life with their daughter Mia. Jessie's had one heck of a past and wasn't believed for the most part,so she's after a simple quiet life. Then the unthinkable.happens and Mia is taken. This is not the main plot of this book, just one side story. Theres alot going on,so buckle up! The ending tied up most things but not all for me. A good read though.
I quite enjoy author Elizabeth Carpenter’s books. She tells a good story and I like that she keeps the readers interest throughout.
Her characters are likable and interesting.
We meet Rosie in this story, new name Jessie, her husband Mark and daughter Mia.
Rosie was found guilty of the murder of her best friend Lauren when they were just young girls.
With very little support from family or friends, Rosie served her time as best she could for a crime she knew she didn’t commit. She did strike up a friendship of sorts with a journalist Sadie Harrison over the years and she felt Sadie might be the only person to question what really happened and help to find the truth. Who is Sadie though and why is she so committed to this case?
Jessie seems happy with her new identity and family life until her husband’s behaviour begins to appear unusual. She feels her past life might be catching up with her when posters start appearing on social media about her daughter who has gone missing. Somewhat strange when her daughter is with her and not missing at all.
Does this strange behaviour really have to do with her past or has her husband got himself involved with a very wrong crowd?
So many questions throughout but you will enjoy the twists and turns to it. They keep you on your toes.
I will attach the link once my post goes up for the blog tour..
"The Girl on the News" by Elisabeth Carpenter was a captivating 4-star read. As a your child Rosie was convicted of murdering her friend. Years later, she is released from incarceration and hopes to move on with her life. Rosie gets married to Mark and together they have a daughter named Mia. Suddenly mysterious Facebook posts appear, suggesting that Mia has been kidnapped. Fearing for their safety, Rosie retreats to her mother's home with Mia.
This story is told from multiple perspectives, including interviews by Sadie, an investigative journalist, as she seeks to uncover the truth about what transpired all those years ago. I found this story to be highly entertaining, with enough twists and turns that compelled me to keep reading and discover what would happen next. The ending felt a tad abrupt, as if the author needed to conclude the story quickly. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative, and I look forward to exploring other books by Elisabeth Carpenter.
Thanks to Bookouture, Elisabeth Carpenter, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review
I always enjoy books by this author so was looking forward to her new book. From the beginning I was gripped, wondering why Jessie’s daughter was in potential danger. The possible reason became evident fairly on as Jessie’s real identity and her past was revealed.
Whilst you know what happened to her as a child when she was known as Rosie, it wasn’t public knowledge. She didn’t really feel that people knew, the only sign of resentment came from her mother in law and occasionally her husband when he didn’t get his own way. She had little contact with her vile mother and the only other people mentioned in her life were the slightly strange Liza and wonderful Sadie.
Sadie was a journalist who believed in Rosie and visited her for a few years, trying to get the answers to prove that she was innocent. She maintained that belief after they lost contact but when she read the missing child posts she tried to help. I found their interviews, and the account of Rosie’s life in the institution fascinating and one of the strongest parts of this novel. Another character was Heather, mother of the murdered girl, Lauren, who has been convinced that the right person had served time for what they did, despite Sadie’s efforts.
It is when Rosie/ Jessie went to visit her mother that you started to see more about the terrible childhood that she had and how well she had done to turn her life around. A mother who neglected her and her brother, preferring to spend time with alcohol and a steady stream of men. And when she needed the support most it wasn’t there.
I thought this was a wonderful novel. I liked the storyline, especially when Rosie featured and Sadie’s interviews with those connected. The characters were strong, not always likeable but definitely believable. Unfortunately, there are probably quite a few like Rosie’s mother.
A unique story line that kept me interested throughout as the characters turn back and forth to keep one little girl safe. She's been taken before....or has she. As the story unwinds, I found myself wondering if the history was indeed the truth. The twists in the stories kept the tension ramped up and the questions mounting. This would have made an excellent "Law & Order" episode.
First, I want to thank Elizabeth Carpenter, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Girl On The News by Elisabeth Carpenter. This is my first book by this author and I quite enjoyed the book. I was very engrossed by the story and kept wanting to read it all the time. Work just got in the way! It was very addictive. There were some parts which were unbelievable but it is fiction and I looked past my issues. I would definitely recommend this book to others. A 5 star rating from me.
Imagine looking at Facebook one day and seeing images of a missing 4 year old girl, only it's your own child and she is sitting right next to you. Jessie and Mark live with their 4 year old daughter Mia. One day Jessie receives a frantic call from her mother saying Mia is reported as missing; only she isn't missing and Jessie has no idea what is going on or who made these posts. This domestic thriller is a complicated story with multiple viewpoints and different time periods. Among the different characters are:
Rosie , a 14 year old girl who was arrested for killing her best friend Lauren. The police never had any kind of proof but Rosie was found sitting next to the dead girl and she was unable or unwilling to talk. Rosie has been sent to a youth center where she will remain until she is 21 years old. Sadie is a reporter who doesn't believe Rosie is guilty. When everyone else has abandoned Rosie, Sadie continues to visit her and tells her she believes in her innocence.
In the current timeline, Heather is the mother of the dead girl Lauren and she is dealing with still grieving her daughter and taking care of her sick mother. Then there is Liza, a young woman who befriends Jessie and acts a little strange showing up at their house without notice and acting overly familiar. How these various people connect to each other and to the missing girl posts slowly comes together and Jessie realizes she must find out what is going on to save her beloved daughter. I thought this was an interesting story and I liked and felt sympathy for Jessie. I thought some of the content was not needed such as the various scenes with Heather and her mother and sister; they did not really relate to the overall story. I also wondered why the police would totally ignore the other young girls who were found murdered under the same circumstances of Lauren. Thank You to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC in exchange for a review.
The Girl on the News by Elisabeth Carpenter was a very enjoyable story and it has plenty of twists and turns with enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters were great, the story was exciting and the style of writing was perfect. I have read other books by this author and I have enjoyed every one of them.
This was the perfect binge worthy, unputdownable, captivating and intriguing read.
Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoture for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book officially publishes on 1/29/24!
This is a quick read and perfect for any thriller lover, new or old. This is told from multiple POVs and weaves in crimes from both past and present, giving the book almost a dual timeline feel. One of the MC’s main tropes due to her past was not something that I’ve seen in books previously, but I did enjoy the fresh take the author provided throughout the book. Would recommend giving this a read!

Netgalley Arc Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pub Date: 29th January 2024
Rosie was only 12 when she was convicted of murdering her best friend, Sadie, an investigative journalist is the only one who believes she’s innocent.
Jessie has a happy life, married with a little girl, you couldn’t ask for much more. But Jessie has been seeing these posts on the internet of missing posters with her daughter’s picture but her daughter is safe with her at home ?
The pacing of this book was good, short chapters making the flow of the story really good. i felt the story was a bit predictable but overall the story was still enjoyable.
The Girl on the News is a domestic thriller.
Rosie was convicted of murdering her best friend when she was just twelve years old. Sadie, an investigative journalist, spends time with Rosie investigating the death of a child. Sadie is not sure that Rosie is guilty. As she continues her investigation there are several others that have died, which only adds more questions.
This story starts off slowly but picks up speed about midway. It is told from several points of views. I was looking forward to this book. From the description I had a different idea of the way this book might go.
I had a hard time with this one. There was the past and the present and a lot of characters to keep track of. I just couldn't keep track and was losing interest as the story bumped around.
Thoroughly enjoyed this domestic psychological thriller! I thought I had it figured out but no! Very interesting plot, characters, and surprising revelations abound!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
hooked me in right from the start and kept me engaged the whole way through. A fantastic read, I will be checking out this author in the future
Rose McShane was accused of murdering her best friend something she has insisted she was innocent of throughout the book we get a reporters interview with Rose her name is Sadie Harrison and in the beginning. She tried to keep an open mind Eventually Rose is let out of jail and given a new name and tries to start again this is how we meet Jess Jess is a mother to Mia and wife Tamark. She even has a new close friendship with a girl named Liz. When Jess’s mom tells her she saw her daughters picture on a missing poster she thinks someone is trying to send her a message but when little Mia actually goes missing Jess is beside herself. After all there are those who really think Jess was the murderer of her best friend And may want revenge. Will Jess get little Mia back and will she live the rest of her life being called a murderer? This was a really good book and although there were a few questionable things in the book I still found it truly interesting. They have way more good things about the book then bad the writing style the way the book grabs your attention at the beginning and the narrative keeps you invested as you go from surprise to surprise and although I do think I figured the book out early on it’s still made for a great read! I want to thank Bookoucher and Net galley 4 my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Lauren's mum finds Rosie sitting next to the dead body of Lauren and is convinced Rosie killed her little girl. Since there was nobody else around, Rosie is convicted of her best friend. Journalist Sadie Harrison have been convinced ever since that Rosie didn't do it. After spending 7 years in youth detention centre she will get a new identity and can live a normal life.
Years later there's a viral post on Facebook about a missing girl called Mia Donovan.. the girl's father Mark also receives a ransom note, but.. Mia is at home with her parents, safe and sound. Is this some sort of a sick joke or is someone trying to send someone a hidden message? Both Mark and his wife Jessie have things to hide, but nobody should know about Jessie's past.. right?
The beginning was a bit slow and there were a lot of characters to keep up with, this made it a bit difficult to follow along but it got much more clear soon.
The story was interesting and gripping, there were multiple people to suspect and I really wanted to know what happened in the end, even though the ending was a bit short for my taste. Would have wanted to know more about the reasons behind the perpetrator's motives.
Oooooh what a read 🙂 I found it hard to put this one down. I was hooked tight from the start and was picking my kindle up at every available option I had.
When an advert pops up on social media for a missing child Mia Donovan, her mother Jessie is astounded, her daughter is sitting there right next door to her. Is this someone’s idea of a sick joke or do they know the secret of Jessie’s past? A secret she had hoped would remain that way for the rest of her life.
When threats towards her daughter are made Jessie decides to stay at her mothers and she takes mia with her. Whilst she is up there Jessie’s worst nightmares come true, when Mia is taken from a local cafe whilst she is out with her uncle.
Jessie is desperate to find her daughter and will do anything including revealing her identity and risking exposing her past. As the police and a local journalist investigate the truth hits home to Jessie that whoever has taken Mia is someone Jessie knows and is close to. At one point or another I found myself questioning just about everyone.
I really enjoyed reading the girl on the news, the only thing I did find was the ending was a bit abrupt and I’d have liked to have seen a future insight say 5 years down the line of where Mia and Jessie are in their lives now, but that’s just my personal preference.
I loved the way this story unfolded, there were plenty of secrets and twists to keep the readers hooked and interested. I’ll certainly be looking out for more books by Elisabeth Carpenter as her work is fast paced and easy to get into.
Thank you to NetGalley the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
