I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Modern Day Quilter is a non-fiction, how to guide book that offers insight and inspiration to quilting in the modern day. The book features 16 patchwork quilts and other project ideas to try other than just quilting. I've always wanted to make my own patchwork quilt and found this book really inspiring and easy to follow and understand. I loved that templates were included in this book (although I received a netgalley widget of the book so can not assess them physically) and found that a great touch and super helpful especially for a beginner like me. I will be looking at purchasing this book to try my hand at several projects that look and seem simple enough to try out. The layout and photography included is fresh and inviting to look at, and I'd say this book should be good for all levels of quilter to use.
I really liked some of the projects in this book. Now I just have to find some free time to spend with my sewing machine so that I can make those projects!
I’ve been an aspiring quilter for a little while now. I love how this book shows you that you can make beautiful designs using simple shapes. I also like seeing the different things you can do with quilting other than traditional blankets.
Thanks to the publisher for a chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
As an avid quilter I was excited to get my hands on this book.
On the pros- The author gives a pretty good overview of the basics.. i think would be enough to get a newbie started. It contains some really fresh and unique designs of modern quilts, Several I have never seen before and would like to make.
On the negatives- I was hoping for photo instructions for the block assembly.- they could be in the final version, but were completely lacking in the version I reviewed. Without these, the instructions are rather confusing. If they are included, ignore this comment Also, I would like to have seen more variation of colors and settings.
All in all a really nice and inspiring book.
Lots of fun, non-traditional, quilt ideas. Vibrant colors, good pictures, and helpful instructions make this a great book for any quilter.
This book contains 16 patterns for quilting projects. It's organized by technique, with each section starting with an intro to the particular technique. The introductions are nicely illustrated and easy to follow, making one feel confident that they would be able to do the projects that follow. Projects are illustrated with diagrams at nearly every step and written instructions are easy to understand. The thing I like most about this book is that one can learn about a technique without necessarily having to make a big quilt. While there is almost always a quilt or wall hanging project for each technique, there are also small projects (e.g., pincushion or pillows) that one could use to just get used to the technique. I also liked the use of classy pastel colors (peach, teal, sage) in the projects. It adds some style to the book without overshadowing the techniques. As a relatively new quilter, I'd buy this book! Even experienced quilters might find some projects that appeal to them.
Thank you to Fox Chapel Publishing and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book to review. My opinions are my own.
Great quilts, and very easy to follow instructions. The quilts are very attractive and would look great in any home. There are great diagrams and photos and will appeal to many quilters who want something different and modern. The colors are great, and not only can you create quilts but other items to wear and for the home to make. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR.
Despite the blurb's claim, this book is neither fresh nor fun. It's just another ho-hum collection of middling patterns aimed at ho-hum middling white women.
I *love* Jet Age/MidCentury decor. My entire living room, save for my 1910 New Home treadle machine, is done up in MCM. However, Modern Day Quilter converted that sense of whimsy into the textile equivalent of cream of celery soup. I'm not saying that Harvest Gold and Avocado Green are the end-all, but they have a bit of gravitas compared to this book's moldy yogurt palette.
The cutting/construction diagrams and text were well done.
This was a great intro to quilting with modern techniques and styling. I loved the varied projects and variety of examples provided. The diagrams were helpful and the pictures were great.
There are some beautiful quilts in here! The instructions seem relatively straightforward and easy to follow. My issue is with the templates - some of the quilts require templates to make and the templates that are in the ebook are not usable, which then makes the quilt unmakeable.
As an avid quilter and crafter with a perpetual fabric stash, "Modern Day Quilter" by Kiley Ferons is a breath of fresh air, presenting 16 projects designed for everyday life, ranging from cushions and quilts to hats and beyond.
Ferons impressively maintains a cohesive colour palette throughout the book, creating an aesthetically pleasing visual experience that sparks inspiration. Including templates at the book's conclusion simplifies the project initiation process, facilitating both starting and completing each endeavour.
The patterns in "Modern Day Quilter" are presented with clarity and consideration, providing measurements and step-by-step images. This thoughtful approach caters to crafters and quilters of all levels, whether novice or advanced. Personally drawn to the charming Compass Star Clock, I am eager to embark on my first project from this book.
The book covers a variety of techniques, from Foundation Paper Piecing to raw-edge appliqué, ensuring there is something for every enthusiast. The beautiful layout and delightful colour scheme further enhance the overall appeal of the book, making it a joy to navigate.
In conclusion, I highly recommend "Modern Day Quilter" to those entering the world of quilting and crafting, especially for individuals seeking to infuse their homes with handmade charm.
I sincerely thank NetGalley, Fox Chapel Publishing, and Landauer Publishing for the opportunity to explore a digital copy of "Modern Day Quilter." This honest review is a testament to the book's excellence in merging creativity, functionality, and a touch of handmade goodness for crafters of all levels.
MODERN DAY QUILTER by Kiley Ferons shares roughly 16 Patchwork Quilts and Projects for Everyday Life. I really liked the Pothos Quilt (short video online) that she includes – it is pretty - although I wish she had included a way to make a smaller size version. That project involves using Half-Square Triangles. Other projects use skills and techniques like curved piercing, appliqué, foundation paper piercing, and y-seams. Diagrams and colorful pictures throughout are very helpful. Thank you to Ferons for the inspiration to continue quilting. There are so many beautiful books on this subject from which to choose. Have a look (Amazon currently has an excellent representation of the content for MODERN DAY QUILTER) and see if this fits your interest and skill level.
This book is a great resource to learn new techniques and design styles. I liked the diagrams, photos and step-by-step instructions . There are also templates provided in the back.
My only critique is these projects would be best suited for someone with intermediate or advanced skills and I think some kind of skill guide of sorts should be included at the beginning. I'm not a quilter so someone like me who Is just starting out may find this intimidating.
As a more "traditional" quilter, I enjoyed reading/perusing Modern Day Quilter. I feel as if I am always looking for new ideas and good tips and tricks. It seems there is always something new to learn! Plus, I enjoy looking at the completed project photos. While the colors used are basic, i.e., solids versus many varietal patterned fabrics, I like the use of the basic colors for these projects. While some of these projects just aren't to my taste, I did find a few that I intend to try. But, that's how it works - we all have different tastes! Thank you #ModernDayQuilter #NetGalley for the ARC and giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Modern Day Quilter : 17 Patchwork Quilts and Projects for Everyday Life. This book provides ideas and instructions for some new and creative projects including a steering wheel cover and embellishing goods with patchwork. The step by step instructions are clear and there are lots of lovely photographs and illustrations. The author also includes full size templates and lots of expert advice to help you on your way.
A lot of cute and appealing projects in here. The many diagrams, photos and step-by-step instructions make it look doable. Definitely a worthwhile book for anyone wishing to make a pretty quilt for home or to give away as a special gift..
I really like the projects in this book. They look great and there are big and small ones. Some of the instructions for the more complicated techniques looked a little short. Paper piecing seems pretty complicated
Modern Day Quilter is a great resource to learn new techniques and design styles. Mini projects are provided for new techniques discussed to help the quilter gain confidence in the skill before tackling a larger scale project. I really appreciate that. Instructions are concise and easy to follow. Patterns are provided when appropriate. As a Halloween fan, my favorite quilt design provided is the Jack-O-Quilt. I also really like the countdown chain as I haven't seen a fabric pattern for one before. I love making those for kids to visualize an upcoming event. Allover, great book for a beginner to intermediate skill level quilters.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
This is a neat book with directions for projects you can do. Very much loved if you are a quilter.
I was impressed by Modern Day Quilter’s patterns that brought that modern vibe to life in new symmetry. There were very informative step by step instructions for beginner quilters, but also difficulty for the experienced who want to add an edgy modern to their quilts. It includes intro instructions for paper piecing, appliqué, Y seams and a variety of templates.
