This was my favourite of the series - I laughed out a few times and loved the character development - especially on some of the new characters “introduced” - fromP&P

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is the third Regency romance/mystery featuring Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney written by Claudia Gray. Due out 18th June 2024 by Knopf Doubleday on their Vintage Anchor imprint, it's 352 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.

This is an homage series, featuring some of the iconic characters from Austen's classic works. This outing sees Darcy and Miss Juliet Tilney trying to get to the bottom of the attempts on the life of Lady Catherine before it's too late. Much of the plot stretches the boundaries of belief and readers need to bring a healthy suspension of disbelief to the party.

The story is self contained in this volume, so it works very well as a standalone mystery. If read out of order, readers should be aware that there are references to the plot and incidents from the earlier books, which could cause some spoilers.

It is well written, however, and very well edited and polished, but ultimately recommended mostly for die-hard Regency romance/mystery fans, and not as much for fans of historical Jane Austen who won't be fooled for a second.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

When Lady Catherine de Bourgh suspects someone is trying to kill her, she calls her grand-nephew Jonathan Darcy and his co-investigator in two previous cases, Juliet Tilney, to Rosings Park to identify the culprit before they succeed. Do I feel like I could be reading a Jane Austen novel when I read the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series? Not most of the time, although the author "borrows" a phrase or two when suitable that definitely help set the tone. Do I love this series anyway? Absolutely! The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a good mystery that kept me guessing most of the way to the end, but much as with a Jane Austen novel, it is the characters -especially those of Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney-- that drive the story and make me look forward, eagerly, to the next book in the series.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Claudia Gray for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh coming out June 18, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I love this series so much and I’m so glad I’ve received the three books from NetGalley. The characters are amazing and I really love Jonathan and Juliet as new characters. If this is meant to be a slow burn, it’s a little too slow. I wish things would progress a little more. I keep waiting for it. This book felt different than the other two because they were trying to prevent a murder. I think most of the action happened in the last quarter of the book. I was hoping there would be a little more throughout the book. But overall, I loved the story. I’m interested to see if there will be a book based on each of Austen’s novels.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Jane Austen adaptations!

This is loosely based on the wonderful Austin books and the author does a good job of developing the characters. I found myself getting lost in parts of the plot and reacting to much of it as I did my least liked Austin’s. It is the third book in a series and appeared to be written for a young adult audience who I am sure would enjoy it to the fullest. Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin Random House for an ARC for an honest review.

I adore this series! I love seeing all of the Jane Austen characters put into the same series and they were all so well written in the new plotlines. I love Jonathan and Juliet together and I ship them so much! It truly is the slowest of slow burns but I love reading it and seeing how they solve the mysteries together. The mystery is also excellent and kept me on my toes the entire story. Also, Lady Catherine de Bourgh is my favorite character to hate so it was fun to have her around the entire book, with plenty of people aiming to kill her. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Thank you to Netgalley and Vintage for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the first book. It was unique in the way it told the tale of Darcy and Elizabeth's son, Jonathan, and an insightful young Miss Juliet Tilney and the murder they solve. The second book didn't grab me, but the plot was good. This one, well it just doesn't cut it. There was a lot of ponderous narrative and very little action till the end. It was just plain boring. I still enjoyed the characters, but they are young, and I want them to get together, and I know that is just not done in Regence times.

Imperious is the word for Lady Catherine de Bourgh. When she summons Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney to her home, Rosings Park, there is no saying "no" to her. Jonathan, because she is his great-aunt and Juliet because the woman has had attempts made on her life and Juliet is a compassionate person who will not stand by and see Lady Catherine meet her demise. And, Juliet wants to see Jonathan again.

It has been a year and Juliet is unsure how Jonathan feels about her. She would like him to court her, but that plan is meeting with opposition from both of their families. The fact that Darcy and Tilney take a near instant dislike to each other after accompanying their children to Rosings Park is a big problem.

There were a lot of suspects but no clear favorite for the baddie. But Jonathan and Juliet do what they do best, they interview and come up with the baddie in the end.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

I thank NetGalley and Vintage Books for an advance reader copy of “The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.” All opinions and comments are my own.

A professional investigation into attempted murder is conducted by our two “detectives” Mr. Jonathan Darcy and Miss Juliet Tilney while they continue to sort out their feelings about each other in the finest Austen tradition, in “The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh,” the third in the Jane Austen pastiche series by Claudia Gray, this one set in 1821.

Who is trying to get rid of Lady Catherine? Oh, overbearing she may be, running roughshod over all her relatives and minions, a snob to her fingertips, but a candidate for murder? Then again…. “Ordered” by Lady Catherine to find the culprit, Jonathan and Juliet have their hands full every step of the way, uncovering family secrets and sorting out misunderstandings until they finally come to the realization of the one thing they should have known all along.

“The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh” is a grand adventure in Austen manners and morals, while giving readers a devious puzzle to pursue. It’s all great fun, and recommended reading for Austen fans and historical mystery readers.

This book was a delight in that it involved lesser known Austen characters (or rather ones that do not get much time--Anne de Bourgh, Charlotte Collins, etc...and what their lives could have looked like afterwards. I also enjoy a story where the victim is still alive and one is trying to make sure they stay that way (no matter how annoying Lady Catherine truly is). Once again, Jane Austen fans are going to enjoy this book

I received an advanced copy of this book from Net Galley. I very much enjoyed this third offering of the Darcy and Tilney series. Jonathan and Juliet are interesting sleuths and the situation is unique. They are summoned to Rosings Park to find Lady Catherine's would be killer. As a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, I appreciated the return of characters like Colonel Fitzwilliams and Charlotte as well as Mr. Collins and Anne de Bourgh. The pacing of this book is slow and methodical, but that fits with time period of the book. I did not guess the culprit and appreciated the lengths the author went to in order to have some surprise at the end. I would highly recommend this to fans of the series, fans of Pride and Prejudice, or enthusiastic mystery readers

Thank you for the arc! It wasn’t my favorite. I think this version of historical type prose isn’t my favorite. It was just a touch wordy! But I still enjoyed the characters and the story. It was decent. Took me a while to finish it tho!

ARGGHHHH - and now I must patiently await the next book to get more of Jonathon and Juliet. The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a bit of a departure from the first two books as the young investigators are tasked with preventing a murder as opposed to solving it. There have been attempts on Lady de Bourgh life and suspects range from the neighboring Collins family, the long-suffering servants, her daughter Anne, or perhaps Anne's husband, Fitzwilliam. It would be easier to figure out who might not want her dead.

It's quite a lot of fun to revisit Rosings Park and its occupants. We also get to know more of Juliet's father, Mr. Henry Tilney, as he accompanies her to Rosings Park. There's a lot of humor and author, Claudia Gray, does a solid job of keeping Jane Austen's voice and style throughout this series. You certainly don't have to know the Austen's stories to still enjoy the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney mysteries, but it adds a whole world of background and character and story arcs. And anyway, Jane Austen was amazing. I think that she would approve of the futures that Gray has provided for her characters.

Here's hoping that I won't have to wait very long for the next in the series. I am impatient to see what happens.

“There is no reason not to commit murder in the morning as opposed to later in the day, and yet it feels most unusual, does it not?”

The dialogue, the delightful antics, the faithfulness to Jane Austen's characters--I'm in love with this series! In this one, Lady Catherine de Bourgh suffers MULTIPLE murder attempts, and we readers hold our breath wondering if one will be successful. You'll have to read the book to find out, but along the way our intrepid investigators (Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney) work to solve the whodunnit, hopefully before they succeed in offing our tiresome Lady DB.

The writing is witty, the pacing perfect, and the solution surprising. Any Jane Austen fans--get on this series if you haven't already!

Thanks to @austenprose @claudia_gray and @vintageanchorbooks for the advance copy!

This is a brilliant addition to the Miss Tilney and Mr Darcy series. I love the clever ways we get to meet more Austen characters and see some of my favorite couples several years down the road from happily ever after. While this is book 3 in the series, I think it reads quite easily as a stand alone novel. We get plenty of background details that will orient new readers to the series.

MIss Tilney and Mr Darcy are such a fun, quirky, talented investigative duo! I enjoy seeing them back together to solve another (attempted) murder mystery, I enjoy their banter and how they bring out the best in each other. Jonathan is especially brightened when he gets to interact with Juliet.

I also really enjoyed the narrator in this novel. They are full of witty comments about life and society during this time period. They made me smile and set a fun tone for the novel. It feels like being transported back to Jane Austen's time and writing. Certainly that is a testament to Gray's research and quality of writing.

The murder mystery itself is engaging and well developed. There are many details that seem disconnected at first. And slowly we piece together the story like Miss Tilney and Mr Darcy. You really don't know exactly who the murderer is until the last part of the book. Getting inside the heads of so many characters was intriguing as we piece together the mystery. So many seem like they could be attempting to kill Lady Catherine. But the final reveal is well done!

I really enjoyed this book. I am sometimes a bit picky about the Jane Austen inspired spin-offs that I read. So many are unable to truly build something worthy of Austen's worlds. It takes a precise and thoughtful author to create a new story out of Austen's beloved characters and stories. I think Gray does it quite well. Looking forward to (hopefully) more stories with this sleuthing team!

I have been reading this series over the last few months and was so glad I didn’t have to wait long for this third book to come out! Once again, Jonathan and Juliet get together to solve a murder…. This time an attempt and not the actual act. So many distractions deter them from figuring out right away, but the journey was so much fun! Will these two ever get together? The characters are so well done, and getting a glimpse of our favorites from Austen is always a blast, whether it’s the ones we love or the ones we love to hate! Let’s be honest, would any of us really been devastated if LCD was actually murdered?!? Maybe not! Will the murderer finally succeed, before Jonathan and Juliet figure it out? Such a good story, and a great mystery!

The third book in the series, and I enjoyed this one almost as much as the first. There’s cheeky writing and subtle wit that kept me chuckling throughout. I really enjoyed the ‘expansion’ on the Austen characters that gives readers a little more, especially on some of the lesser known individuals (like Anne de Bourgh and Colonel Fitzwilliam!). It’s done very well and comes off as true to the original characters and each of their unique styles.

In this particular book, it was almost too funny to get more of Mr. Collins’s effusive adoration of Lady Catherine, including his own two kids being named after her (Katy and de Bourgh lol). Along with this, Lady Catherine’s exacting speech and sharp comments stayed true: “You are exceedingly tall. That, I suppose, comes from your mother’s side of the family. The men in our family, though not deficient, cease growing when they have reached the appropriate height for a gentleman and no more.”

My only complaint is that the “action” of the mystery at times feels a little slow moving; and I was surprised that after three books, the hero and heroine STILL haven’t declared their feelings to one another. I’d say it’s about time.

Within the world and characters of Austen, there is lots to explore so I am hopeful this author continues to write a cozy mystery type of Jane Austen “fanfic”!
The books in the series are closely tied together so I recommend reading them in order.

Thank you to Vintage Publishing for the complimentary ebook in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney join forces to protect the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh from a would-be murderer. As attempts against her life escalate, Jonathan and Juliet must unravel a web of suspects and confront their own feelings for each other in a race against time.

This is a cute cozy mystery with engaging characters. The plot kept me guessing until the end.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, the third in the Claudia Gray’s wonderful Austin sequel/spinoff Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, is another winner. At this point, I do feel it’s pretty necessary to read them in order, as while the mysteries remain self-contained, and a lot of the other Austen characters from prior books don’t show up in this one, some plot elements do carry over, particularly concerning the ongoing romantic-ish developments between the two titular series protagonists.
Jonathan and Juliet remain delightful to follow, and the slow-burn romantic chemistry is palpable. While their romantic feelings are lightly touched on in this installment, there are a lot of things that keep them apart, including the fact that their families don’t exactly get along (particularly their fathers) and they are from different social spheres. There is an implication, particularly on Lady Catherine’s part, that she suspects this could be a repeat of what occurred with the elder Darcy and Elizabeth, but that doesn’t come to pass in the book. While I do worry it could fall into the slump many of my former favorite mystery series do by dragging out the romantic subplot, there at least seem to be decent stakes here for the characters, which I hope will continue to be unpacked in future installments.
With the focus moved away from some of the other Austen characters that made up the supporting cast of the prior two books, it was fun to see some of the supporting cast of P&P, and how they were all getting on. Elizabeth’s continued frostiness with Lady Catherine was to be expected, although Darcy doing his part to be a dutiful nephew in spite of this is also no surprise. Colonel Fitzwilliam marrying Anne was rather sweet, and an ideal situation for both of them, given his lack of prospects and her health issues, and them even having a child was quite nice. The Collinses seem happy enough, even if I questioned the names of their children named in honor of Lady Catherine, especially poor De Bourgh. There is, however, a twist where he’s concerned that endeared me to him and the family by association. Even Lady Catherine, for all her snobbishness and general lack of self-awareness, is rather delightful in her own way. While Gray isn’t a perfect match for Austen as a writer, she gets close enough to understanding the nuances of the characters to make them all feel believable and in keeping with the source material.
As for the mystery, I liked the twist this time that Jonathan and Juliet are being called on to prevent a murder before it occurs, after Lady Catherine has endured some near-misses. The intrigue is still high, and many of the characters appear very suspicious and have motives to want Lady Catherine gone. The culprit wasn’t who I expected, but looking back, it does make sense in hindsight.
This was perhaps my favorite installment yet, and I can’t wait for the next one! I’d strongly recommend this series to fans of Jane Austen who also enjoy an Agatha Christie-style mystery.

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh" by Claudia Gray is an absolute gem of a novel, marking the third installment in a series that continues to captivate and enthrall readers. As a devoted fan of the first two books, "The Murder of Mr. Wickham" and "The Late Mrs. Willoughby," I was eagerly anticipating this latest addition, and I can confidently say that it does not disappoint.

Once again, we are swept into the world of Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy as they navigate the intricacies of a murder mystery, but this time with a refreshing twist. Gray's masterful storytelling seamlessly weaves together elements of Jane Austen's beloved novels, particularly "Pride and Prejudice," introducing us to familiar characters while adding new layers of depth and intrigue.

One of the highlights of Gray's writing is her ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats, and "The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh" is no exception. With each twist and turn, I found myself eagerly turning the pages, unable to guess the outcome until the very end. Gray's intricate plot twists and turns keep the reader guessing, ensuring that the journey is just as thrilling as the destination.

What truly sets this novel apart, however, is Gray's impeccable attention to detail and her deep understanding of the characters she brings to life. From the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh to the charming Mrs. Tilney, each character leaps off the page with their own distinct personality and motivations. It is a testament to Gray's skill as a writer that she is able to seamlessly integrate these characters into her own narrative, creating a rich tapestry of storytelling that is as engaging as it is immersive.

As a devoted reader, I have already devoured "The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh" twice over, and I eagerly await the release of the audiobook so that I can experience it all over again. Claudia Gray has once again proven herself to be a master storyteller, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us in the next installment of this captivating series. If you are a fan of Jane Austen, murder mysteries, or simply love a good story, then "The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh" is not to be missed.

The third installment of Claudia Gray's mystery series was a treat. Lady Catherine de Bourgh was always an interesting character in Pride and Prejudice and to place her as the would be victim makes this a fun read. Due to their success at solving murders, Mr Jonathan Darcy and Miss Juliet Tilney are commanded by Lady Catherine de Bourgh to uncover the person who is attempting to kill her. To solve the mystery they must investigate the residents of Rosings Park and well as the Collins family. As they search to find the would be murderer they find both families have many secrets and are not forthcoming with answers. Those who are fans of Pride and Prejudice, will enjoy this immensely.
