Loved the book. Hadnt heard of Vigdis, so I was curious about this book. The illustrations are so creative with the scale, past and present colliding on the same page. Great way of showing many pictures at once on the same page with good composition techniques. Our young writer is interesting letting her imagination run wild with the .. what if walls could talk.. good history as well as future lesson.
This biography is in a format of a comic book with a child dreaming about becoming a writer. The child knocks on the door of the world’s first female president and she invites the child in. Inside her house, she talks about her journey and many items in her house to the curious child.
The story of Vigdis is interesting it explores her time in France and later teaching French when she comes back to Iceland; her passion for environment and being the first single female to adopt a child. Her drive in life is noticed by other people who encourage her to run for the presidency.
I see this format as engaging for the targeted audience of 6-9 years. The illustrations are fun. The sentences are simple so it’s easy to grasp the context for this young audience.
P.S. This book is not listed on Goodreads.
What a gorgeous book! The use of color and black and white pictures together was really cool. Of course, the story was cool. Vigdis was different from the start, doing her own thing because she wanted to. She broke precedent by adopting a child as a single woman, then worked in theater before being prodded onto the world stage as the world's first democratically elected president.
She was perfect for the job because she was practical and caring, and had already proven that she was interested in other cultures with her study and teaching of French. Vigdis is a regular person who did great things, which is something that can give kids hope when trying to achieve their own goals.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
