The Buddha looks at the life of the historical Siddhartha and the beginnings of Buddhism. Almond takes Buddhism from the east to the west in a fascinating look at the Buddha and the overlapping tenets of the philosophy.
I loved the history throughout the centuries - fully engrossing and illuminating.
Fascinating, scholarly deep dive into the intricate history and myth of the Buddha. Having at least some familiarity with Buddhism and the Buddha is probably helpful as this is fairly dense…but it is a really interesting perspective on how what we know or can speculate of the history intertwines with the more mystical and religious beliefs. It gives a lot to ponder, not just on the Buddha but the cultural implications at large surrounding the stories and myths, and how they’ve been received and spread across the world.
