I was initially drawn to this book by the eerie cover so I really wasn’t too sure what to expect when I started it. I was all ready to like it, was in the mood for a scary read even if it proves to be generic. This book is a YA book and a repackaged version of the book "Envy (Empty Coffin #1)., originally published 10 years ago.
When the body of troubled teen Katelyn Berkley was found in her bathtub, the small town of Port Gamble was shaken. On the surface, her death appeared to be a cry for help gone wrong, but twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan didn’t think so. Being gifted with the abilities to ‘hear’ the dead, the twins received a message from Katelyn and soon they suspected everyone in Kingston High, from popular cheerleader to the class outcast.
So, I didn’t realise this was a YA thriller. Originally published as ENVY in 2011, this new edition has been re-edited. The
premise was so promising, but I wasn’t into the high school drama aspect of it. I was quite intrigued with Hayley and Taylor’s ‘gifts’ though. It was clear from the beginning that the book was a set up to a bigger story universe for the girls.
Even though I’m not usually a fan of YA thrillers, I thought the ending of this one was done quite well! The narration was also well done - so easy to fly through the book. It also added to the fun that I was reading this around Christmas and New Year, and that was also the setting of the book.
This book starts with a bang, I love that in stories, and from there is a non-stop tense, heart pounding and fast paced thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
This is the first book in a series and I can’t wait to read the second one.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this complimentary audiobook.

Beneath Her Skin, written by Gregg Olsen, is the first of the Port Gamble Chronicles books. This book follows the people of Port Gamble and has multiple story lines, but begins with the death of Katelyn Berkley. The book follows Katelyn’s friends and family as they try to find out what happened, and as they learn more about Katelyn and what lead up to her death.
I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, but this is my first time reading a
Fictional book by them. I really enjoyed learning about the different relationships between the characters, and the mystery of twins Hayley and Taylor and how they help with the mysteries of this book. I do recommend this book, and think it would also be good for a YA audience. Thank you to NetGalley and to the author and publisher of this book for an ALC in exchange for a review.
3 1/2 stars
I"m disappointed to say that I struggled to get through this audiobook. I've heard wonderful things about Gregg Olsen's writing which had me anticipating a nail biting thriller. What I found this book to be instead was a YA whodunnit with several plot lines spinning at once and no clear direction. It moved slowly and sadly felt like a trudge for me to get through.
That said, I did like the premise behind the book. To have the twins with their psychic abilities and a bus crash from years before that impacted the community was clever. Yet I needed it to move quicker and I probably didn't need to be in the minds of two teenagers.
Thank you to NetGalley for this early listening copy of the audiobook.
So this was my first Gregg Olsen mystery book. I was sucked into this book so quick. There was mystery inside the mysteries. I loved the twins. I feel like there were many realistic families. I usually don't care for high school mystery or drama, but this was written so well.
The audio book was well narrated. I was able to understand everything that was said and the reading didn't detract from the story. It made it better
I received a copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
I did not realize that Gregg Olson also wrote fiction and I am very happy that he does that just as well as he does nonfiction! I really liked his take on the paranormal aspect of the girls' abilities and I want to learn more about it. How did it happen? Why all the secrecy around the accident that they were in? Tell me more!

To be fair I struggled with this book a little. I kept going with the story which initial was a slow start but then developed as the book went on. However, Gregg Olsen is a fantastic author. As the book developed, so did his characters. Didn't predict the outcome which is always good in a book.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC
Beneath Her Skin by Gregg Olsen is 4 out of 5 stars for me. I enjoyed the audiobook version of the book. The narrator was engaging, easy to listen to, and kept me hanging on her every word. The book had some twists and turns that left me guessing until the end of the book. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a bit of mystery and thriller with a "oh I didn't see that coming".
This book is listed as YA and is very juvenile. Some of the writing felt stilted, as if a grown man was trying to write as a teenage girl. Still, the Ryan twins were interesting characters and I will read the second one since I am interested in their backstory
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my copy of this audiobook rerelease
When the body of troubled teen Katelyn Berkley is found in her bathtub, the close-knit community of Port Gamble, Washington is shaken to its core. All signs point to a suicide but what makes her death even more tragic is that Katelyn survived a horrific bus crash ten years ago, which took the lives of several young girls and has scarred the town ever since.
Hayley and Taylor Ryan are identical twins who grew up with Katelyn and have spent the last 10 years getting over the crash. Ever since that fateful night the twins have shared a secret: they can hear the dead. And it soon becomes clear that Katelyn is communicating with them. Whilst the town believes it was a tragic accident, something much darker lies behind Katelyn’s death.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Port Gamble is a great setting for a new series and the first book certainly didn't disappoint. Most of the characters are teenagers, but that didn't meant that this wasn't a grown up book; sometimes these kind of books are more Young Adult, but this definitely ticked all of the 'thriller boxes'.
I found myself intruiged by the twins and their 'gifts' and really wanted to keep listening to see how it all came together.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this book in return for an honest review.
This was an okay read (listen actually, because I chose the audio book).
I'm not quite sure what to make of the twins and their 'abilities'. I found them both quite likeable characters, but the ending was a little over-the-top. That's not to say it can't happen, but I think if it was downplayed a bit it may have been more plausible, the twins could have been a bit older perhaps, not babies.
Also, the fate of Moira Windsor... gosh. That seemed a bit much, and Starla... Eye-roll. Do teens really behave that way? I suppose some do, and that is what is wrong with the world. It is very much a YA book, (which I don't mind at all), but I don't recall it being marketed as such.
Great for a younger reader, i think they would relate more than I did.
The narrator did an amazing job of portraying the drama of port gamble. Her range in different voices was incredible and really allows the listeners to follow along with the changes in characters. The story itself was not my favorite, I thought it dragged a bit but I did finish it because I wanted to see how it ended up.
Beneath her Skin (Port Gamble Chronicles) is the first of a two book series.
This book is about the controversial death of a teen Katelyn, found dead as a result of a suicide. Two twins try to dig up secrets regarding Katelyn’s life, as they hide their own. As the police begin investigating, there is more going on they anyone could expect.. The town is still reeling from a horrible accident years back and it’s quite possible everything might just have a connection.
This book has twists and turns with a decent storyline. This book is definitely a young adult thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to listen to this book.
The narrators in this book were great and made for an enjoyable listening experience! This book was an entertaining read told through multiple points of views and timelines. The thrill was maintained through the full book and I did not anticipate how it all wrapped up.
Beneath Her Skin by Gregg Olsen and Narrated by Karen Peakes, is the first book in the promising Port Gamble Chronicles series and I really enjoyed it. However, it was slow to start with, but once I started to get into this audiobook I was hooked and it was hard to put down. It was an interesting audiobook/book.
I am looking forward to the next instalment within this series.
Big thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for my arc.
This is a Young Adult Mystery, and this is the first book in the Port Gamble Chronicles series. I had a hard time getting into this book, and I found the beginning of this book to be boring. I did enjoy the middle and end of this book much more. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
Overall, I struggled with this book. The storyline was intriguing and had plenty of mystery, but the plot was lacking for me. The narrator did an excellent job on the audiobook and kept me listening until the end. The story started out slow and the ending was odd.
The story starts with the death of 15-year-old Katelyn, officially labeled as a suicide, yet none of the people around her can believe it. Identical twins Hayley and Taylor, former friends of Katelyn during their childhood, along with other friends and fellow students, embark on a quest to uncover the truth surrounding her untimely death.
Honestly: I did have a hard time with this book although I usually enjoy Gregg Olsen's stories. However I just could not warm up with that one.
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of mystery and development and maybe I would have enjoyed it at another time.
The narration by Karen Peakes kept me going on until the end!
Thank you #NetGalley #Bookouture Audio for this audiobook
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This one was ok for me. I enjoyed most of it but didn’t love the ending.
I thought the narrator did a good job though.
