I am reviewing these two together because I received them at the same time and well, they just go together! It is not necessary that you read them in order. They are stand alone thrillers and worth every minute!
This is a series that follows Haley and Taylor. These two young ladies are twins and they are a bit psychic. They can feel if something bad has happened in their small town. Both of these books open with a young lady’s body. In the first book, the young lady is electrocuted in the bathtub. Of course the police believe it is suicide, but the twins know different. In the second book, the young lady has definitely been murdered. The twins have their suspicions and they will not let it rest.
I enjoyed the second book, Dying to be Her, just a little bit more than the first. It has more history about the twins mother. I found it fascinating how she grew up in a prison. Her dad was the warden. And, of course, the twins do not leave this alone and they go and search the prison, looking for answers. This leads to some major issues…and you just need to read this to find out.
The intensity and anxiety the author creates in these novels is on target. I love a book that I can get lost in. Gregg Olsen does not disappoint.
The narrator, Karen Peakes is excellent. Great job on the pacing and the voices. Lots of characters and she kept everyone separated!
Need two good thrillers to take you away…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!
I received these novels from the publisher for a honest review
5 out of 5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoutre for allowing me to listen to this in exchange for an honest review.
I have been kind of hit or miss with Greg Olsen but the premise for this sounded very intriguing and the cover was fantastic so I really wanted to read this and let me say I am not disappointed and in fact enjoyed this so much! I found the residents of Port Gamble to be interesting and this kind of has a cozy vibe for me. I also really enjoyed the paranormal aspect. Twin sisters Hayley and Taylor Ryan can communicate with the dead. The blurb says that they can hear the dead but to me it is different, they seem to get flashes of things. The narrator Karen Peakes was really great, she did a fantastic job of sounding like a teen girl one moment and an adult another.
The sort starts very solid and took awhile to get into nit was very entertaining once I got hooked. It had a fun supernatural element to it. I did find the end took a weird turn.
If you are looking for something just a little different, this might be what you are looking for. It was not what I expected but, I really enjoyed it. Hayley & Taylor Ryan are really easy to like (as is the rest of the cast). I found myself engrossed in their adventure and didn't want to put it down. Loved the twist at the end. I was not expecting it, which made it better. Looking forward to the next adventure.
At first, I thought this story was just a little over dramatic. Then I realized it was a YA book and I just didn’t notice. It has the perfect amount of drama for a YA! The author was pretty on point with the teenage attitudes and language as well. I don’t generally write YA, but this is a good writing reference for teenagers if you aren’t around any. It had all the prefect cliques and everything. It was intriguing to see the abilities with the twins. I write speculative thrillers, so this was a great read for me!
Huge thanks to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!
The story gives us an insightful view into the issue of teen suicide and the devastating effects of cyber bullying. However; his well-developed characters somehow fail to overcome the slow start and messy and unfocused storyline.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
'Beneath Her Skin' by Gregg Olsen is a thriller that is really geared more towards Young Adults. It's got a very unusual concept. I listened to the audiobook version skillfully narrated by Karen Peakes. It was good. I really enjoyed it even though I do not normally like young adult fiction where they actually act like teenagers. I feel like the author did a great job portraying teenagers and the way they make decisions. There was a lot of foreshadowing going on so it is possible to guess the culprit. There were a few different storylines and I really liked the fact that there was a 2nd book which is also good. You can tell it's a re-write of an older book due to the way social media and technology is described which is kind of cute now!
I actually went ahead and listened to a few other series by Gregg Olsen and I enjoyed them all. I was happy I had a chance to listen to this book as it introduced me to this author. Thank you Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for providing me with an early copy of this audiobook.
One night in December, in the small town of Port Gamble, the body of teenager Katelyn Berkley is found in her tub dead. She was a survivor of a terrible bus crash from ten years ago that killed many and shook the town, and more recently was seemingly very troubled. All signs pointed to her having committed suicide. Not everyone in the town believes that though.
Hayley and Taylor Ryan, identical twins, grew up with Katelyn and survived the same bus crash as well. Though, ever since that fateful day they have been able to communicate with the dead. Soon after Katelyn's death, they begin to receive messages that lead them to believe Katelyn's passing was far from self-inflicted. Soon the twins are using their gift to help drum up answers to their questions and secrets from the past to help find out what really happened to Katelyn.
I enjoyed this book! Though, I enjoy almost all of Gregg Olsen's books! In particular, I enjoyed how this book had just a smidge of a supernatural aspect to it with the twins abilities to sense and see things about those around them. There was plenty of mystery in the story and the twists at the end were not ones I saw coming! I did want to know more about the twins supernatural abilities, but I suspect that will come in book two!
Thank you Bookouture Audio for providing me with a copy of this audiobook via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts!
I was not able to listen to this one before the deadline date. I will update this review once I have read or listened to it. Thank you for the approval. Wish we had longer deadlines though.
Holy sh*t! This book was absolutely perfect! I liked everything about it. Multilayered story with many different things going on at the same time that was all weaved together wonderfully. This was my first book by Gregg Olsen and it definitely WONT be the last!
This book was entertaining for sure. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.
There was a lot going on. Sometimes it was hard to keep track of all the dramatic storylines. This gives YA vibes for sure, but it wasn’t super annoying, like it sometimes can be.
Two twin sisters have a special gift. After a teenage girl from their school is found dead in a bathtub, they decide to use their special gift to solve her suspicious death.
The audio book was an easy listen, and I’m curious for the second one. Totally going to start it.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

This book was challenging to get into because at times the characters were incredibly juvenile. Parts of the book were hard to follow and I still want to know more about this bridge accident the girls were involved in as children. The last quarter of the book was the best part and was so gripping and fast paced. Overall I want to know more about the twins and how they will use their abilities in the future.
Identical twins Taylor and Hayley both have superpower. They have strong psychic intuition and can capture knowledge from the dead since they got mysterious accident. When their classmate found dead at her bathtub, everyone consider it as suicide. But the twins felt differently about that and searching clues and evidence to prove their intuition was right.
The story premise was great and I am so excite to dive into the story. But the plot was unfocused and far stretched. I want read more about this super abilities but I got teenager dramas instead. The investigation was going slow and feel dragging. It pickup later but not as fast as my usually like.
The audio narrative actually very good. It suit the characters, and flesh out the gloomy atmosphere after the bathtub scenes. The narrator help me get through into the plot until the end.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookkouture Audiofor providing a copy of this ebook. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Expecting Publication : 5 Jan 2024
This book was originally published as Envy.
"Beneath Her Skin" by Gregg Olsen is a mystery about the death of a teenage girl named Katelyn. Her friends, Taylor and Hayley, are twins who have strong intuition and get messages from Spirit. They then need to find physical evidence to support their psychic knowledge. The story is well written and fully resolved by the end. This book was originally published as "Envy" in 2011 and has been re-edited.
The narrator, Karen Peakes, does speak clearly and evenly. I kept falling asleep between chapters 23 and 33, though, and I'm not sure why that was. I think it was a bit slow during this part.

Haley and Taylor are the twin daughters of crime writer Kevin Ryan in the book starts with their classmate Kaitlyn Bing found dead by her mother Sandra. It is considered a suicide but soon the twins who have extrasensory abilities learn that suicide is not what happened. Haley and Taylor or identical twins and although their abilities differ they work together to try to figure out what really happened to Kaitlyn. There’s also a reporter name Maura who is relentless in her quest to talk to the twins and wants to bring up the accident that happened 10 years before something the Ryan family doesn’t talk about The girls are sophomores at Kingston hi school and they are very close even when Haley starts dating Colton a boy Taylor had a crush on Taylor takes it in stride because they have bigger problems investigating the death of the childhood friend Kaitlyn Murphy. Before it’s over One person may not live long enough to find out who the culprit is. Everyone from Caitlin‘s best friends creepy new Stepfather or is Starla the best friend a suspect ? There’s a lot of gossip but the girls know it wasn’t suicide but can they prove it? Never so much that happens in this book good and bad and although it was mostly good I do have to mention the bad. For one thing I really thought the twins would solve this mystery and a big final reveal but that isn’t what happens as a matter of a fact they’re nowhere around with the culprits secrets come to light and although it is a mind blowing chapter I still thought the twins would be in on it but they’re busy doing something else that will eventually turn out mine blowing! I am still going to read the second book in this Siri‘s i’m already have it downloaded I cannot wait to see where the story goes I think I was just expecting a more cozy type mystery as opposed to what this book is which is a thriller/mystery but loving Greg Olsen‘s books as much as I do even had this book been terrible I think I would still read the next one but thankfully it was more awesome than bad. I also want to say I think the narrator is an awesome talent and loved her narration she is such a great character distinction who makes men sound like men women like women and set a great tone for the book. She even gives the twins slightly different voices so you can tell who is talking just awesome! I want to thank Bookoucher audio and Net Galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Beneath Her Skin by Gregg Olsen is the first audio book in a series. I found this book to be an original, entertaining, and easy to listen to story.I think this book would really appeal to the high school/early college crowd.
I loved it! This is a creepy thriller about toxic friends, secrets, lies and a search to find the truth about a teenage girl's murder. It is a fast paced and entertaining read that kept me interested and turning the pages until the very end. I have loved reading Gregg Olsen's books and look forward to the second one in this series as well as reading more from him in the future. If you enjoy a good thriller, I highly recommend.
Gregg Olsen is an author that always catches my attention. The way the story is told immerses you into the text right alongside the characters. I loved every turn of the page and couldn’t guess or think of the ending. You will enjoy every minute of reading.
Don't you love it when you finish a book and immediately have to go get the sequel?! I've heard of this author plenty but this is the first one I've read by him. Audiobook was an easy listen, with a pleasant voice and accent. Enjoyed the story.
There’s a lot to unpack here so let me just start by saying I really enjoyed this book. It’s addictive, well written and I’m so glad there’s a sequel
When teenage Katelyn is found dead in the tub, the neighborhood are horrified. Hayley and Taylor, although no longer friends with Katelyn, decide to use their secret psychic abilities to investigate the death. Although it’s ruled as an accident, the twins aren’t convinced.
I was a bit nervous about the psychic thing… definitely out of my comfort zone, but it felt right. This is a teen’s POV, so it was ok that this was light on the technical details and didn’t look too deeply into the tough issues like agoraphobia and alcoholism - I loved the light, fun approach to the darkness of death
The balance between exposition, description and dialogue is seamless. There’s never too much history that I’m bored and I got a real sense of who each person was. The writing weaves between past and present, and hints at past events that tease just the right amount
There were a few times I found the writing a little condescending (perhaps cause YA) and the plot a little far fetched, but overall I went with it and enjoyed the book thoroughly
This book was originally published as Envy in 2011 and this re-edit is definitely worth reading if light paranormal YA is your thing. I also recommend listening to the audiobook, as narrator Karen Peake is lovely to listen to
