A thriller with a theatrical setting. This one made me wonder about the artistic scene - could things really be so cutthroat? We follow Jemima in this book and her quest to secure that role that will make her career and the lengths she will go to, to get what she wants. This one was a bit of a slow burn but still entertaining. Extremely well narrated though.

📘 "Someone Like You" by Becky Alexander

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is like:

-A slow-burn that lacks the expected spark
-Absence of thrilling twists until the rushed ending
-Characters lacking depth and emotion

"Someone Like You" presents itself as a slow burn, and slow is spot-on, but unfortunately, the burn is missing. For about 90% of the book, the narrative focuses on Jemima's pursuit of work recognition and feels more like contemporary or literary fiction than a thriller. The absence of the typical thrilling elements was quite evident until a rushed and predictable twist in the last 5%.

The characters lacked depth and emotion, making it challenging to empathize or connect with any of them. The narrative felt devoid of substance as every character seemed solely focused on advancing their careers, lacking emotional depth.

While the twist was predictable, it failed to generate interest due to the lack of investment in the characters. Despite the potential, the book lacked the anticipated intensity and emotional engagement.

3.5 rounded ip
Impressive narration. Saw a lot if the twists coming, but was also surprised by a lot that I didn't. Very enjoyable thriller and I'll definitely read more bybthis author. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook

This story line was so slow.

I could not get into the first 65% of the audiobook. It was boring & uneventful. Just the inner dialogue of an actress trying to make it. The lack of confidence and self deprecation was painful to listen to.

Once the story progressed and Jemima ended up in Ny, it picked up pace a little bit, but not enough to be truly enjoyable. The “twist” at the end fell a bit flat and left you like “ok???”.

The narration was not great. The narrator impersonating an American accent was cringe worthy. I also had to speed it up 2x because of how slow it was. Listening to normal speed I may have pulled my hair out, at least would have DNF’d.

This book was not for me, at all.
I finished because it was in audiobook form and like I said picked up pace eventually. However after the ending, it was not worth it.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The storyline was much more slow paced than I’m used to, however, this author pulled it off! The details were focused on the relationships of characters instead of events. The ending tied everything together nicely. The narrator was perfect too.

It was kinda of dull at times. Nothing exciting happens for like the first 80%. It’s just going through her career. Idk. But I think the writing was good because I was still interested. Like I wasn’t bored with her day to day. There is some good reveals at the very end.

Well, this was not at all what I expected. It is rated as a psychological thriller and unputdownable.
I don’t agree.
It was a VERY SLOW start…and I don’t feel like that really changed until the last chapter or two of the book.
Then it felt like EVERYTHING happened ALL AT ONCE…very rushed ….

It is told thru the eyes of Jemima. She is an actor (actress) who has not been cast for a while. At this point in her life, she is willing to do ANYTHING to get a part… And so, basically, that’s what she does…

We see the theatre through her eyes…and all the nonsense and craziness that goes along with actors, directors and cast. BUT, I’d have to say, if this is how it is in real life, I’d never go into acting!

That being said, she interviews for a part, and will really do whatever it takes to get it. It goes off the rails from here (where she shares way too much of what goes on behind the scenes…if it’s actually for real…)

We watch the play and what happens to her and the other actors. The after parties. The drugs and drinking…

We watch her meet a man, and fall for him pretty quickly.
But then things around her start falling apart…

They end up going from London to NYC and she interviews there for another play. Again, things just spiral out of control.

Could these things really happen? Not sure…
Are they believable? Not really. Not to me…

And then the ending comes (definitely not too soon for me), and it is just R U S H E D!! Why??? I feel like the book dragged on forever…and then a hundred things happen all at once??!!?? Just crazy!

I liked the premise. I did not like (really) ANY of the characters…

Please let me know your thoughts if you have read it or read it in the future!

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.

I feel
Like this was miscarried as a thriller.. very dull and lacked intrigue. I wouldn’t recommend but appreciated the arc.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape, Storm Publishing for the audio ARC of Someone like you by Becky Alexander .
I really enjoyed this audio. I felt that Josie Charles narrated the book well and that her voice was well paced with the main characters feelings vocalised throughout the book.

The narrative of Someone like you is from the POV of Jemima, an actress who wants to audition for a role within a play. Jemima get casted and then strange things start to happen around her. Would she go to any lengths to get to the top?

I found the whole book intriguing which kept my interest right the way through. I felt that there were a few slow places within the middle part and the ending tied everything up with some twists that I didn't expect.

A great audiobook which kept me engaged.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

Based on the description, I was expecting a thriller, but I'm not quite sure I would place this book in the category. The book started out very slow, with a heavy emphasis on theatre/acting/broadway life. To me, it read more like a contemporary or literary fiction. It lacked the typical twists, turns and surprises that are usually found in a thriller until the last 5% of the book, and then it felt predictable and rushed. Two stars for me, as it was too much of a slow burn, and I kept waiting for something to happen, to make it a 'thriller."

This is so super twisty! I expected it to be good but this was fantastic! I was not expecting any of it! I love the narration too. What a wonderful experience I had listening to this one!

A thriller that follows an actress who is vying for big roles and working her way up. I found it a little bit repetitive. Had some spicy scenes I skipped. Kept my attention but pretty dark.

An enjoyable read surrounding theater and the people it takes to make the story come to life. Definitely appealed to me as I am involved in that world, though much more casually. The characters were brutal to each other trying to get ahead.
My only complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed, not as complete as I would have liked.

Great narrator as well!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my advance copy of this audiobook

The narrator Josie did a wonderful job at keeping the audience engaged in the book. The author did a nice job at making Jem’s character feel vulnerable and unsure of herself which really helped on the unreliable narrator front. I’m not sure how to feel about the reveals at the end of the book as it felt like an after thought in wrapping up loose ends. Overall, a good audiobook to listen to.

It’s nice to finally meet you, Jemima, Rebecca Sheridan says, her voice soft. I force a smile, and tug at the hem of my faded black dress. I need this job so badly, but I can’t let her see that. Just like she can’t know I have no money, that this isn’t my real accent. That most of my friends are gone… or dead.
I say yes when she offers me the role. I'll soon learn Rebecca's polished smile masks secrets far darker than my own.
Every day I rehearse. I spend hours running lines with the other lead, whose vacant expression and tearful outbursts make me uneasy. I try to ignore how Rebecca cuts me down then builds me up. How the others stop talking when I enter the room.
Why am I really here? Am I just a pawn in some twisted game?
No. There’s no way she can know who I really am.
What I did. What I'm capable of…
Right?

I'm 80% in and I'm completely confused about what is happening. 🤷🤷🤷
Why do all of these people keep dying????
& how is she just gonna hop on a plane out of the country when her costar just died!
Well i didn't see that coming.. what a weird quick ending... 3.5 I stayed super interested!

It felt like I went into this book blindly, I do think both the publishing company and author would benefit from more of a descriptive synopsis as there is so much more than just Rebecca. What an interesting storyline that kept me intrigued enough to find out what happens next but felt like I got alot of backstory and extra scenes that weren’t necessarily needed. I appreciated how the story came together at the end but it felt like a very round about way of getting to the end.

I absolutely loved the narrator as the story was primarily set overseas it felt authentic to have a British speaking narrator.

- Thankyou #netgalley for the opportunity to have this arc copy of this book for a honest review -

✨ Theatre business story based in London and New York. LGBT . Slow paced .

Jemimah is an actress who just live day by day working for a coffee shop while getting a role for the theatre.
She did go to this play which she was been accepted for. Then a lot of not so good theatre business going on in here.

She was been abused by a producer, to have sex with her to get a business with this so called big produced Rebecca.
Rebecca used her aswell just to get into her.

Very slow paced with a small revelation at the end. Vengeance and grieve.

I must say the story was pretty catchy. You can know what happen behind the this business . Who you trust and not trust. It just a lot of questions I’m not sure with. What happen to jemimah? Did she stay in New York? Did she still go on in the business? The end was rush . That’s why it’s missing a one star.

But overall it was great.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

For a single narrator, Josie Charles did a fantastic job with this story! She covers all the characters well and I was always able to tell which character was speaking. I liked that this story took place in London and New York and focuses mainly on theatre actors. There were some twists I predicted but others that I never saw coming. I really enjoyed the way it ended and would recommend to anyone who likes psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators!

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook. I thought the original idea of this book was exciting. I wasn’t a fan of the narration which made it hard to get through the book.

Gemma “Jemima “Evans is an actress who went to one of the most influential acting schools in London RADA and has been trying to make it big since graduation when she gets a call from her agent to attend a casting that when she shows up it’s only her and someone behind a two-way mirror eventually she gets the part but that isn’t the end of the strange events that happened from an accidental death to a questionable one and they all evolve around one person Rebecca Sheridan the owner of the production company who is putting on the play Poison that Jemima is starring in. This is what begins Jemima’s trip into the underhanded world of theater back stabbers and so much more. I didn’t like Jemima for more than one reason the first one side say so nothing wrong with stealing and I didn’t find her personality was as defined and I couldn’t get a hold to what kind of person she really wants. I mean she wanted to be an actress yet she seemed so standoffish at one time and not another time she sleeping with much older people… It was just all confusing to me. I get why she did it but I didn’t find her likeable this book almost felt like a long joke whose punchline was kind of funny but not worth all the narrative before to be honest I found the first part of the book way more interesting than the rest of the book. I wouldn’t consider this a Mystery or a Thriller but more of a fiction book with dramatic moments I found the people in this book to be self absorbed clueless as to real life Ronaldo it was interesting to read I got tired of listening to Jemima talk about going to Rada and bringing up Olivia in the end The big reveal wasn’t as big as I thought it was going to be for the slow burn narrative I had to sit through. As for the narrator I thought she did a great job a little wonky on the American accents but she did way better than I would’ve done and I’m American. I want to thank storm publishing, dreamscape select and Net Galley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
