I really liked this for several reasons. It was really cool reading the perspectives of people through the lens of the time period, for sure. It was also so cool to see a woman writer, who would have already been such a rarity during the period, DOING something so progressive: analyzing her subjects with empathy. I loved the story about the little girl who liked to roam and ended up jumping off the roof of the house. I had a million questions about it, but I loved the look into a little girl of the period who was so wrongly placed in a time where she couldn't fit. This was a good, usable collection, and at the very least, I will buy the book and use selections.
A comprehensive collection of a fascinating writer. This volume honors a woman who stood among others and elevated the time she lived and worked in with her elegance of prose and matter-of-fact retelling of court proceedings. A must-add to any feminist history collection.
I think Elizabeth Garver Jordan had an incredible writing style that really pulled you in. Although I request this book based on her writing about Lizzie Borden, I was pleasantly surprised by the articles and pieces that she wrote regarding women in the journalism world and other social issues including poverty and low-income class issues.
