An interesting overview. I don't think I'm quite ready to take on my first rug but I did enjoy reading about the project and look forward to learning more.
A very comprehensive guide to getting started with rug tufting. The author goes above and beyond the basic outlines by giving multiple examples of their own experiences and tricks that they discovered along the way. Essential reading for anyone who wants to dip their toe into this craft, although be warned, there is a lot more to it than you’d think! Luckily the author lays it all out so you won’t caught off guard. Some lovely photos of projects for inspiration.

Kirsten Girard created a gem with Beginner's Guide to Rug Tufting. From the moment I opened the book, it was clear that Girard's passion for rug tufting shines through every page. The layout is user-friendly, making navigating the projects and instructions easy. The projects featured are absolutely fantastic and perfect for anyone just starting out in the world of rug tufting.
What stood out to me was the incredible level of detail, especially the labelled images of the tufting gun, which made it so much easier to grasp the concepts being discussed. Despite the wealth of information, the book is not overwhelming—Girard strikes the perfect balance between thoroughness and accessibility.
Another delightful feature is the inclusion of QR codes throughout, making it convenient to access the craft projects online. The book is aesthetically pleasing, and as an avid crafter, I found myself inspired to dive into this new craft. I may not have needed another hobby, but thanks to this book, I'm now considering purchasing a tufting gun to try out the projects offered.
Thank you, Kirsten Girard, for generously sharing your expertise and love for rug tufting with the world. Your book is a valuable resource for craft enthusiasts and beginners alike.

I have been really interested in rug tufting so this was very informative and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and also got some really good ideas. This book inspired me so much and I’ve been in a bit of a rut.
A very well written book with lost of information, practical and well illustrated.
Rugs Tufting is done with a medium size machine, and it looks to me like a upmarket stapler, it can be done manually but it would take a lot of time, skill and patience. There are lots of photo to explain the process and lot of patterns to try, which look stunning.
It makes me think I would like to try it, Really great book. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR
Pros: I love doing different fiber arts (mostly cross stitch and needlepoint, but some quilting and crocheting as well). I haven't yet tried rug tufting, so I was interested to read this book and learn more about the art form. As a beginner, I especially appreciated the detailed section about materials and tools, because that is what has been the most daunting to me when considering trying rug tufting.
Cons: This is not a con of the book but of the subject of the book. This book gives so much great information about rug tufting that I was able to determine that it is not a craft for me due to the tools and prep work required to do a project.
Thank you to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing | Landauer Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
This is a very helpful guide to rug tufting. Like the author, I bought a tufting gun, yarn, a fabric, glue, etc but haven't pulled the trigger, so to speak, with actually using it. This guide starts with the very basics, like choosing a tufting gun, the materials you'll need and recommendations for same, and instructions to build your own frame.
I loved this practical guide that provided a human commentary to the rug tufting process and I really feel empowered to set up a frame and get started. There are many beautiful photographs of rugs the author has created, as well as great patterns that the reader could copy to make a rug of their own. I really am excited to begin this craft having this reference by my side!
A well organized, beautiful book that provided me not only with instructions, but history behind the craft. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I went in with low expectations to get an introduction to a craft I am interested in and walked away with more than I had bargained for-in the best way. The instructions were helpful, well illustrated, and well explained.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you want to learn about rug tufting then this is the book for. Step by step instructions. Also photos to help you. recommend.
🎨 Just finished "Beginner's Guide to Rug Tufting" by Kirsten Girard – what a gem! With nearly 70 pages packed with detailed instructions, even a complete newbie like me feels ready to dive into tufting. After reading, I immediately went shopping for materials mentioned in the book. Kirsten's clear guidance gives me confidence to start tufting right away. Plus, the designs seem beginner-friendly yet purposeful – a rare find in fiber arts. Can't wait to try the strawberry bag! 🍓 #NetGalley #RugTufting #FiberArts #CraftingSuccess 🌟
this book is very easy to follow and contains every thing you need to start rug tufting, from inspiration, projects, getting to know the tufting gun and choosing yarn. the projects are simple and are not just for rugs there are even decorative projects. i would definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to get into rug tufting.
Super helpful for someone just starting out. It's easy to follow, gives good advice, fun examples, and makes me want to try tufting again
I have never done rug tufting, but I have definitely considered it and my daughter has picked up some needle punch kits which are fun and a smaller scale version of this.
As I went through this book, I was really appreciative of the fact that Girard spent so much of the book on the basis: equipment, options, how tos, etc. She even provides information on how to build your own frame. Now, this isn't stuff that you can't find on the Internet and YouTube already, but if you are like me, it can be pretty annoying to keep rewinding the video to see how things are done. And I like the combination of written and visuals - strikes a good balance.
I also like that she gives a good collection of designs to start folks off. None of the ones she shares are all the detailed, but I think that is good because you don't want to try for too much detail when you are learning because then you run the risk of it not turning out. I would say that most of this book is focused on the technique and tools, with only a smaller section of patterns. And I find that more than ok for someone starting out, because once you have a grounding in the basics, you can start to project visuals onto a cloth to draw out yourself for anything you want to tuft.
Will I start tufting after reading this? Probably not. Why not? Because this book, while making the process simple, showed me that there is a lot that goes into this fun craft/art form, and I am not quite ready to take a leap. Maybe when I retire and have more time. Until then, I will punch needle. But I would definitely recommend this to someone trying to figure out if this is something they want to start doing and then, if they decide to, to help them get going.
I was super excited when I saw this book because I have delved into the hobby of manually rug tufting small items for my etsy store. That being said I have always been so intimidated to venture into the world of tufting with an automatic tufter! This book was super informational and concise, easy to digest full of beautiful works by the author and makes the process so much less intimidating! I also loved the layout of the whole book and the step-by-step procedural guide that is perfect for a beginners or even seasoned hobbyist that want to know more of the business standard from a successful rug tufting artist.
The only negative for me personally was that the patterns in the back weren’t so much my style, so if I bought this book it would simply be for all of the knowledge in the front not so much making the art in the back!

Special thanks to NetGalley, Fox Chapel Publishing and Landauer Publishing for making this book available for me to review and give my honest feedback!
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook.
A very nice looking easy to read and follow along instructions for rug tafting.
The pattern are mostly modern style patterns so it is not my style but I think other people would like. It is a neat craft that I have never done but would love to try!
