I didn't find myself drawn to any of the characters or the mystery. I didn't know who any of the characters were and kept getting confused as to who was who. Since this is the seventh book in the series it's probably best to read in order. This book just wasn't my cup of tea.
Death by Chocolate Raspberry Scone is book #7 in the A Death by Chocolate Mystery series by Sarah Graves.
This was an intense story with a lot going on! I like the characters Jake and Ellie, the Chocolate Moose, and the Maine setting. The mystery of the missing fisherman and the gold coin was interesting with plenty of twists that kept me guessing.
Thank you to the author, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is book 7 in the “Death by Chocolate Mystery Series” and I haven’t read the others but still greatly enjoyed this story. I listened to the first bit on audio, but switched fairly quickly because for a cozy mystery this one was a bit more action packed and I didn’t want to wait. I really liked the main character and amateur sleuth Jacobia “Jake” and her partner in their bakery business Ellie. the two of them are known for being nosy (as all good amateur detectives are) so when a local fisherman is missing and presumed dead both his wife and the new police chief ask Jake and Ellie to see what they can find. The fisherman’s wife let’s them know he had a gold coin on him and while she doesn’t know what it would be worth she needs that money to take care of her kids and asks if they can try to find it and return it. But the sleuthing becomes more dangerous as sharks, additional body, and a missing child raise the stakes. I really liked this mystery, but I like the whole gambit. It felt a little more intense than a typical cozy, but it was clean and free from gruesome details with the deaths. Overall I gave it 4.5 stars which I rounded up because the last part of the book gripped me so much I couldn’t put it down at all.
A little disappointing really. The deaths, because there were several, had absolutely nothing to do with chocolate, raspberries or scones. Still, the story was fun and the characters entertaining so I will forgive the deception for the sake of a fair review.
The main character is Jacobia Tiptree, known as Jake and she, along with friend Ellie White, owns a bakery. The husband of one of their friends goes missing, murder is suspected and Jake and Ellie begin an investigation. There was a lot of action - maybe too much actually. Each boat trip was a massive drama and those poor sharks were badly maligned.
The very best part of this book is the characters. Jake and Ellie are not simpering heroines waiting to be saved, and Jake's extended family are just wonderful. Not that I would want to live in that house with only one bathroom but still. The ending was effective if expected.
It’s summer and Jake and Ellie are sweltering in their chocolate shop as there’s a heat wave in Maine. Sally, a fisherman’s wife, shows up begging her old friend Ellie to find if Sally’s missing husband was murdered. Oh, and there’s a missing doubloon. And once again Jake and Ellie are off on the chase while Jake’s daughter-in-law keeps shop. I loved this book, sometimes a little crazy but always a lot good. Love the series.
When Sally Coates husband goes missing, she asks her childhood friend Ellie to try to track him down. But is she interested in actually finding him, or only the gold doubloon supposedly stored in his shoe? Jake and Ellie, at the urging of new sheriff Lizzie Snow, decide to check things out, and no one is more surprised than them over so many boat trips to mysterious places filled with sharks in search of bodies and pirate treasure. Did I mention sharks? Big, hungry ones. Every blooming trip!
It is the usual whacky mystery (and #7 in the Death by Chocolate series) full of sensible questions and what seemed like good ideas at the time..., evil baddies and quirky characters (and which is which?), and big orders for chocolate raspberry scones which they still have to figure out a recipe for. I have to admit, their investigating ingredients for their baked goods is as much fun as the murder bit. And a hot August on the Maine coast is a worthwhile character all itself. Can't call this a cozy - did I mention the sharks? There's far too much action, derring do, and then there are always those bodies.... And sharks.
Highly recommended.
If you love cozy mysteries, then this is the book for you. I loved all of the characters in this book, and the chaos that seems to be their everyday life. I also appreciate that the author didn’t invent some unbelievably coincidental reason for bakers to be looking into a murder. They are friends who’ve been asked for a favor. There were a couple things that I questioned the decision making about, but nothing that detracted from the story. This is the seventh book in the #DeathbyChocolate series. I haven’t read the others, but I plan to. 4 ⭐️
The island village of Eastport, Maine, where Jake and Ellie serve up the most delicious desserts! Death by Chocolate Raspberry Scone is the seventh book in the series. Ellie talks Jake into trying to find out what/where her friends husband has disappeared to. Lots of red herrings with twists and turns galore! Great characters with lots of family dynamics. Will keep you guessing. Thanks #Netgalley and #Kensington for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are mine.
Death by Chocolate Raspberry is the seventh book in a cozy mystery that follows Jake, a woman who owns a chocolate shop.
I like all of the characters and I love the setting. It has a cozy town vibe going for it and it has a beach vibe too. I love the food and chocolate throughout as well. The mystery itself was interesting as well. I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a cozy mystery.
Thanks so much to netgalley and Kensington for the arc of this book and Dreamscape media for the alc of this one in exchange for an honest review!
The latest in a fun series that might be most appreciated by fans because of the extent to which family dynamics are part of the plot. Jake and Ellie take a break from baking to look into the death of their friend Sally's husband and the disappearance of a valuable coin. Not so much of a break because things get a little wild. At the same time, the home renovation at Jake's is proceeding and there's considerable drama. The mystery is twisty enough and the characters are good but honestly- a shark?? Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Looking forward to the next one.
A cozy mystery with the series regulars. If you know the characters, it will be better. Personally, I preferred Jacobia’s earlier series.
A fun cozy mystery set in a small town. Characters own a bake shop. This installment of the series has them taking a break from the shop to help a friend who thinks her husband is dead. Lots of activity for Jake. Trying to run the shop and trying to help find the husband of her partner’s friend
A devious, dangerous and deadly story full
of twists and turns. It has a good cast of suspects, clues, and red herrings.
An enjoyable read, with lots to ponder over.
Jake and Ellie are swamped with customers during the summer season. They’re working hard to keep the bakery cases filled and have a little time for much else. When the husband of one of Ellie’s friends disappears, she talks Jake into taking on some sleuthing, in addition to their extremely busy schedule.
In between trying to figure out a recipe for a big order, that’s due soon, the ladies begin looking for a man who is believed to be dead. Is Ellie‘s friend telling the truth, or will the ladies wind up joining him in the great beyond?
I have loved this series since the very first entry, and it never disappoints. I enjoy the setting in Eastport, Maine, the characters, the pups and all things related to the water. Each and every entry the author has a solid story, along with a mystery full of red herrings to keep you guessing whodunit until the very end. I highly recommend this series.
Ellie and Jake (Jacobia) are amateur sleuths who are asked to look into the disappearance of Paul Coates by his wife Sally, who is also looking for his missing gold coin. As owners of a local bakery, they've historically been involved in other mysteries. When sharks and a new boat are seen on the water, Jake and Ellie are immersed in a world of thieves, witches, and murders.
I wanted to love this more (I'm a sucker for cozy murder mysteries!), but I had trouble connecting some of the people and events and making it cohesive as I was reading it.
Maine, island-life, family, family-dynamics, friendship, small-business, small-town, baker, amateur-sleuth, investigation, murder, local-law-enforcement, local-gossip, verbal-humor, recipes, situational-humor, fishing-community, suspense, action, danger, reckless*****
She used to work for the mob but now she works in the family bakery and lives with her husband, parents, kids, grands, and dogs in an elderly house that is very much straining at the seams. An island neighbor needs help to find a missing husband who might be lost at sea, so Jake (Jacobia) and Ellie
begin an investigation that leads to missing treasure, shark attack, border problems, and even worse!
It kept my nose to the page (figuratively) right to the twisty end!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Kensington Books, Kensington Cozies via NetGalley. Thank you!

I throughly enjoyed Death by Chocolate Raspberry Scone. A well written cozy mystery. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
Jake Tiptree and her best friend/business partner are back which means murder and mayhem are sure to follow in Sarah Graves’ newest book, Death by Chocolate Raspberry Scone. The action begins when Sally Coates, a friend of Ellie’s, asks for help when her husband disappears, supposedly with a very valuable old coin. This book has so much action that it is almost frenetic. I found myself wondering how Jake functioned without seeming to sleep and why she and Ellie continued to investigate this case when it became increasingly dangerous. Besides the evil walking on two legs, there are sharks menacing the waters near Eastport, ME, just to liven things up a bit. As a good bit of action takes place on the water, this is pertinent. There are many new characters, as well as a long list of returning characters from previous books. I would have loved to have seen a bit more interaction between Jake and Wade, who is mostly an afterthought in this book. That said, I was never bored and all the action kept me reading into the night.
I always seek out a new Sarah Graves book and truly enjoy her writing and the large cast recurring characters that populate her books. That said, this is not my favorite of her books. Three and a half stars.
Sarah Graves has done it again.
This cozy mystery - Death by Chocolate Raspberry Scone had me guessing until the very end. Great characters and twists and turns make this one of my favorite reads to-date.

With relatable characters and engaging relationships, Graves crafts a tantalizing mystery that keeps readers hooked from start to finish. Amidst the summer heat and the hunt for pirate treasure, Jake and Ellie navigate treacherous waters to uncover the truth behind a suspicious disappearance. (I received an advance reader copy of this book, and all opinions are my own.) Full of twists and turns, this cozy mystery promises a sweet escape for any reader craving a thrilling adventure.
