This book is the second in a series, and this is a case where I really wish I'd read the first book, Touchstone, before reading this one. Normally I do that, and I don't know why I didn't this time - I think having the background information on these characters would've helped tremendously with understanding their motivations and actions in this book, and I'm rating it with that in consideration - otherwise it would be more of a 3-star read for me. Still, King gives enough background from that first book that I didn't feel completely lost and overall I enjoyed the read. Set in Paris in the Jazz Age, there's a lot of name-dropping and I at times found myself doing a quick search to see if certain characters were real or fictional. King does an excellent job of setting the scenes with her descriptions of places and spaces, whether they're beautiful, ugly, or downright icky. It's an interesting mystery, and our perpetrator is pretty twisted. It's definitely made me want to read more of King's books - I've somehow never started her Mary Russell series, but it's moved up my never-ending TBR list.

This series is, in my opinion, the best one Laurie King is writing. I hope to see more!
