I marked this as "will not be giving feedback" in the past because I didn't think I'd have a chance to finish before release and I was new to Netgalley and just didn't know a lot of things lol anyway, I was genuinely interested in it, so I was able to finally get my hands on a copy of the audiobook (thanks, Libby!) and so I'm back to review!
I really liked this book! It had me on the edge of my seat essentially the entire book- and it just progressively ramped up my anxiety the closer we got to the end of the book.
What a simultaneously heart-warming (okay maybe not, but there are moments) and heart-wrenching book. Can't believe this was Megan Lally's debut, and I'm highly anticipating her future releases! The narrators did an incredible job as well! Read it in one day because I couldn't stop listening.
“Get in, losers, we're going sleuthing”
The three kids in the book that go on their investigation were great, and I really enjoyed their dynamic as they fought to find the truth, and their missing friend.
Wayne. <spoiler>ugh. creepy motherfucker!</spoiler>
The cops really screwed up- I was like screaming at my phone while listening to the book at certain parts!
I'll be thinking about the end of the book for a long, long time. If you haven't read it yet, go in as blind as you can so you don't get spoiled!
Megan Lally is now a must buy for me. This book is a start to finish thriller and while it's young adult it's not your typical young adult book. I love how the teenagers are mature and enjoyable to listen to and empathize with them. I've read this book twice now and since I read so many books in between I had completely forgotten the twist.
The premise really intrigued me but I didn't realize it was geared for YA. It was a decent read, it just wasn't for me.
I went into this book not knowing much about it and to my surprise I was hooked from the beginning!
This book was intriguing and kept me fully engaged, making this an unputdownable read for me. The narrators were great and kept me fully invested.
Great job by the author and a great debut!
Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to listen to the audiobook before it got archived!
I will make sure to get a copy or the audio version, myself to give a review on my socials.
I really enjoyed this read! I devoured this book in one sitting. The twist I didn’t expect and at the end it was sad!
I loved this book I think the way the narrator spoke really gave the book life and the plot of the story was incredible I loved it
This was really good! I thought I had it figured out but the twists kept coming. I found it really hard to stop listening to the audiobook. Both narrators were excellent.
This book kept me listening from the moment I started! The audiobook performers did an excellent job!
This is a thriller that I had hoped would have a happier ending. Definitely not a warm and fuzzy book, but will keep you engaged. The characters were well developed and the plot kept me guessing!
I liked the characters, but didn't see the ending coming. Sad, but also brings awareness to the level of depravity of some.
it took me some time to get into but it was a good enough story. I liked the writing style and will read more from Lally.
Gripping. Lots of good twists and turns.
I was hooked from the start. Looking forward to reading more from Megan Lally!
Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this book!
If you're looking for a mystery that's as thought-provoking as it is thrilling, I highly recommend picking up That's Not My Name. Just be ready to question everything you know about yourself by the end.
Remember that Richard Marx song “Hazard”?
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
This was a song I kept humming while listening to this book, and I'll explain why in a moment.
There are two stories running side by side here.
Story A: A girl wakes up in a ditch and she doesn't know where she is, who she is, what happened to her, but somewhere in the back of her head haunts the knowledge that everything is not quite as it should be. The police are helping her and soon her father is coming for her too and she has no reason not to go with him. Day by day, her memory starts to return in tiny fragments, and she receives more and more confirmation that her initial feeling did not deceive her.
Story B: Drew is a high school senior and only a few months ago he and his girl were making plans for what to do together after school and now the whole town is convinced he killed his girlfriend who went missing one spring night. Drew feels guilty, but not at all because of what the whole town believes. And Drew will do everything he can to find Lola before all hope of finding her is hopelessly lost.
The girl sees things and hears things that convince her even more that she needs to get away from her "father". Drew finally finds peers to help him investigate a possible clue that Lola has been seen.
I don't want to say more because it's a very thrilling story and it doesn't end the way you might think.
The book started on a rocky note and I didn’t get into it immediately. It seemed like the writing (even though I listened to the audiobook) started getting more intense as the plot went on and before I reached the halfway point, I was hooked. There were one or two moments I found a little unrealistic but it didn’t overshadow the bigger picture for me. This wasn’t a light book and might not be for everyone, but it involved an insane villain and that’s usually a winner for me.
I LOVED this!! I got the audiobook version of this and the narrators were captivating and kept my attention! The book had me qguessing and second guessing the entire time!! Quick and easy read/listen! Thanks NetGalley for this ARC
When a teen wakes up bruised and shivering on the side of the road with no memory of who she is, a police officer takes her to the station. Soon, a man shows up claiming she is his daughter Mary, and he has the birth certificate and photos to prove it. After Drew and Lola got in a fight that resulted in Lola storming off, he thought they needed time to cool down, but when Lola goes missing, the local police and the rest of the community seem to believe that he murdered his girlfriend. Since no one else is seriously looking for her, Drew is determined to find Lola before it is too late.
I couldn’t read the story fast enough, as I wanted to see how “Mary” would figure out that she wasn’t actually Mary. I knew there would be some sort of twist toward the end, but I did not guess what it would be and was surprised. Sophie Amoss and Robb Moreira both did an excellent job with the narration of the audiobook. I was surprised to learn that this was Lally’s debut novel, and I look forward to seeing what novels she comes out with in the future!
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an audio ARC of this book.
I listened to this as an audiobook and once I got started I had difficulty stopping. It's very intriguing and I really wanted to know what was really going on. Both narrators are engaging and kept me invested.
I totally thought I knew where this book was going, but I was SO SO wrong. I don't read a lot of suspense/thriller because I get stressed out when I don't know the end, and this was no exception, but I really enjoyed this book nonetheless. The characters were well developed and I liked the fact that I didn't have to suspend logic to find the big reveal believable.
Great audio narration.
I’m not usually a YA reader, but I had heard good things about this one and was excited to check it out. While it wasn’t anything mind blowing, it was a very fast paced, enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this to people who love YA and are maybe new to the thriller genre.
The narrator was very easy to understand, even at 2x speed while I prefer to listen at.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Tense filled thriller with a killer twist at the end. Loved this on audio. Will definitely read more from this author!
