I thought this was a cool premise for a book and I enjoyed how the documentary crew gave the book a true crime feel. Overall, I liked this book but I felt like it was just a bit too long. This made the pacing feel off, especially in the first half, which dragged on for me. After about 65% through the book, I started to get a bit more invested in the mystery and the characters, but until that point I had a hard time connecting to Bel as a main character.
Thank you to the publisher, PRH Audio and netgalley for my review copies of the book. All opinions are my own.
This was a page turner. A great story, and a great Murder Mystery for the YA lovers.
The book revolves about Bel, and her mom's disappearance 16 years prior. Someone decides to make a documentary about the mystery, and the family. As the cameras are rolling, Rachel Price reenters the picture. And now Bel is sure there are lies involved, and her mom is in the center of it all. She decides to sleuth through this mystery herself, and maybe finally figure out what happened that one faithful day.
There were a lot of twists and turns and jaw dropping moments. The writing is superb, and the story flowed easily,, Though I question the ending and the choices made, this book made for an entertaining and a fast read.
DNF at 45%. The Reappearance of Rachel Price had an interesting premise. 16 years ago, Rachel vanished without a trace leaving her 2 year old daughter Annabel (Bel) in a car on the side of the road. Annabel has grown up with her dad and her mother’s disappearance has always been a weight on them. It’s a main focus again now as the family agreed to participate in a documentary. And then Rachel shows up. She says she doesn’t know where she’s been - that she was kept in a basement and then was let go. Bel doesn’t think her story is adding up.
I was so intrigued by this synopsis and was really interested to see how it would go. Unfortunately the execution really didn’t work for me - mostly in how unlikable Bel is made out to be. I understand that it’s been tough for her but seeing her be selfish and rude and mean to everyone in her life over and over and over really began to wear on me until I ultimately decided to stop reading. I’ll skim ahead to see what really happened to Rachel but this one wasn’t for me. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the free ebook to review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for this ARC!
I’m a huge fan of Hollys other books so I was excited to read this one. I think this one started off super strong and kept my attention until about 50%. It didn’t really pick up again until 80% and then I was fully invested.
All and all, I think this was a good YA thriller but I didn’t love the twists. It may be from me reading too many thrillers, so I think others will enjoy this one!
The Reappearance of Rachel Price is an interesting mystery/thriller about a young girl’s search for the truth about her family. The story follows 18-year-old Annabel (Bel) Price whose mother disappeared after the two of them entered a mall. Bel was found, but her mother, Rachel, was not. Years later a documentary is being made about Rachel, which sets Bel off on an adventure to discover the truth. As Bel was only 2 when Rachel disappeared, she doesn’t remember the details. When Rachel’s side of the story is revealed, it is up to Bel to figure out what is truth and what is fictional.
The writing does a great job at balancing between the documentary style and reality. Rachel’s disappearance is at the center of many true crime podcasts and message boards as many people want to know the truth. There is an interesting contrast between those on the outside and Bel’s side who lived through it. Jackson did a great job at providing enough information without giving away the ending. The characters were easy to connect with and I enjoyed all of them even if they weren’t as likable. The puzzle laid out in the story was nicely done and I enjoy Jackson’s writing style. I think I must give Jackson a ton of credit as there were minor flaws throughout, but they weren’t enough to add up to any actual issues. I am not sure if this was a right time/right place scenario, masterful writing, or a mix of both, but this story definitely made me intrigued to read a lot more from Jackson in the future.
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Delacorte Press, for the opportunity to read this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
I loved Five Survive! So when I saw Holly Jackson was coming out with a new book, I knew I had to read it! This book was good, but not as good as her previous books. It’s long and a bit slow. I felt like the final pieces all come together too well in the end. It was very twisty, but I bet predictable. I don’t want to say too much and give anything away. It’s best to go in blind!
Ever since I read Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, I have been a huge fan of her writing and jump at the chance to read a book of hers. Jackson’s latest YA Thriller reinforces that decision as she has once again written a book that kept me guessing what was going to happen next, questioning everything I was being shown, finding myself completely blindsided in the best way possible with what the truth about everything was and an ending that was beyond satisfying.
While it took me a bit to warm up to Bel as I found her to be an abrasive character, as I delved into the history of her mother’s disappearance and was slowly introduced to the rest of the price family and the ways in which they interacted and responded to one another, I slowly began to understand why she was the way that she was. Bel was such a complex character who I both loved and wanted to slap at the same time. She was unbelievably smart, to the point that she was stubborn and suffered from tunnel vision. She was so determined to prove that Rachel was lying and had to be evil, that it never entered mind to question all sides of the situation.
This book was both a journey of finding out the truth about Rachel as well as one of Bel discovering who she is and that she shares more with her Mom other than their just her looks and voice. It’s a book that re-solidified my belief that Holly Jackson is one of the best modern writers of Young Adult Thrillers and I cannot wait to see what she comes out with next.
Finally a new book from the queen who brought us A Good Girl's Guide to Murder! If you are like me, you have probably been waiting for this since you devoured Five Survive.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price follows Bel, a teenager whose family is known for her mother's mysterious cold case disappearance 16 years prior. Everyone in the town, including Bel and her dad, believe that Rachel Price must be dead and have moved on to the best of their ability. There is a new documentary coming out about the case and Bel is sitting front and center in front of the camera - at her dad's request. But one day, as Bel heads home from filming, Rachel reappears in shabby clothes and an incredible story. Bel is skeptical of her once-missing mom though, and devotes herself to uncovering the truth about her disappearance.
This book sucked me in right from the beginning. True crime has taken the nation by storm and many of us cannot wait for the next big true crime doc to drop. This book scratches that itch with a story stranger than fiction, a cast of characters that all have secrets to hide, and a really determined FMC to take us through the mystery.
Bel written by any other author would have gotten on my nerves. This girl is no Pippa Fitz-Amobi - she's angsty, angry, and seems to believe that the world owes her something because of the trauma her family went through after the disappearance of her mother. Despite this, though, Jackson weaves enough emotion into Bel to make her sympathetic - I think, especially to an older reader. By the end of the book, I wanted to give Bel a hug and tell her that her life really wouldn't be a recounting of the same trauma forever.
The other characters are equally outrageous and charming, including a somewhat sleazy filmmaker, a dad with a heart of gold (but maybe also a trove of secrets), and a cameraman with questionable fashion sense. The pacing is steady and will keep the reader entertained with side adventures and red herrings abound. I think this is most comparable to As Good as Dead from Jackson's bibliography, with the same urgent sense of danger and the somewhat shockingly violent overtones. This book, especially the ending, is not for the faint of heart.
I'm extremely grateful to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me the opportunity to start this book before release day. It really was a treat of a read.
Another great mystery read from Holly Jackson!
Rachel Price, mother of 18yo Bel, has been missing for over sixteen years. Bel’s father needs money to care for his elderly father, so he decides to participate in a documentary about the disappearance of his wife, Rachel Price. Bel doesn’t want to rehash everything over and over again but she wants to help her dad. She wonders if the documentary will help find her mom by rekindling the investigation. Also, Bel can’t shake the thought that her mom abandoned her all those years ago and that she just might be alive somewhere. The documentary is just the beginning of the chaos that's to come.
Likes/dislikes: I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery! The character development was interesting and the author showed Bel’s coping mechanisms of cruelty and shoplifting small items as a way to deal with the abandonment she’s had in her lifetime. The documentary idea was great as it helped show the changes in the family and Bel’s perspective of the situation.
Mature content: PG for kissing.
Language: R for 53 swears and 121 f-words.
Violence: PG-13 for assault.
Ethnicity: predominantly white with mention of a brown skin background character.
Oh boy, this took me on a ride! At pretty much no point did I know what was going to happen and I loved it. Jackson is fantastic at writing dark YA mysteries and I hope she never stops!
The main character Bel was pretty unlikeable to me and though I enjoyed following her as she figured things out, I also was frustrated with how mean she was to everyone. Ash especially did not deserve any of what she said or did to him, my sweet summer child.
I felt like the ending wrapped up a bit too neatly and wish it had been a little messier after all the characters went through, but other than that I was pretty happy with this read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the copy
Holly Jackson delivers again! YA thriller as good as Good Girls Guide to Murder and Five Survive.
Bel Price's mother disappeared 16 years earlier leaving her behind in a car..just vanished. A mystery that has never been solved. Now, Dad agrees to participate in a documentary not only to clear his name once and for all but also he needs the money to care for his aging father who needs around the clock care after suffering a stroke and advanced dementia. Bel barely wants to cooperate, even with some heart stirrings for Ash, the camera assistant. And then..surprise! Rachel reappears..and it is not met with rainbows and unicorns. Bel is sure Rachel is lying about her disappearance and she is going to prove it with the help of Ash. However, in Holly Jackson style, Bel is in for a ride. It won't be that simple to prove her mother is a liar. But, who else is lying? Are there secrets about her mother prior to her disappearance that Bel is unaware of? And her cousin just seems to be LOVE having Rachel back. Bel does not understand the draw. Why is she the only one who catches the lies.? This is dysfunctional family dynamics at its best. And the twists keep coming. 5 stars
3.5 stars - This was a fun, twisty book. It was pretty long, probably longer than necessary, but most of it went by pretty quickly. The first 15% or so kind of felt like it dragged a bit, but it picked up after that and in the end, I can kind of understand why it was laid out that way. I really liked the main character, Bel. She’s got some issues, including purposely being kind of mean to people to push them away, but she’s self aware and still very likable and funny. The bit of romance was really cute. I enjoyed their banter. The twists were a mix of more and less predictable. There were a couple things I saw coming, but some I didn’t, so it kept me surprised enough towards the end when everything gets revealed. Most of the book, I was just curious about what was really going on- which is ideal for this kind of book. Overall, it dragged here and there, but it was a good time!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Delacorte for providing me access to this eARC for my honest opinion!
What a mindf*ck it must be for your mom to disappear on you when you’re a baby, you were in the car and technically an eyewitness, but you were a BABY so you don’t remember anything yet everyone hounds you— and then, and THEN—- she reappears 16 years later. And you’re the one that finds her (alive). I’d throw in the towel on my sanity to be honest. Now… imagine the husband who got framed initially for her murder. This happens in the midst of them filming a documentary of the family like one of those true crime documentaries. Not to mention things don’t feel right about Rachel. Is it because she’s relatively a stranger or there’s something more?
I enjoyed reading from the POV of the daughter as I felt I got to properly move through the spectrum of emotions!
Thank you TBR and Beyond Tours and NetGalley for the read!

Holly Jackson is a goddess in YA Mystery! Her books have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and this book is no different. Bel Price has gone sixteen years without her mom and just when filming for a documentary about her mom's disappearance starts up, her mom, Rachel Price, appears again. But something's about Rachel's story doesn't add up to Bel and she's determined to find the truth.
Bel is such an interesting character and I'd be lying if I said I didn't wanna strangle her most of the time. She fights for the truth a little too hard and fills her own mind with answers she believes. Finishing the book made me really appreciate her as the main character tho, and seeing this story through her very biased viewpoint was a really unique to the story. You could guess what happened but Bel herself would shut you down as the reader making you have to guess a different plot.
Like with all Holly Jackson books the love interests are always so fun and the perfect boys. Always believing in their crazy girls. I loved Ash and could totally take another book featuring Bel and Ash
I loved this book and with any other Holly Jackson would recommend to everyone and anyone. Her plots are always captivating and they are so untwined and everything gets answered in the most satisfying way even if you crave more. I can't wait for whatever else Holly Jackson will give us!
Thank you NetGalley for the arc in exchanged for an honest review
I really wanted to like this story, because I thoroughly enjoyed Jackson’s other books but this one was just okay to me. There were some really good parts but for some reason it just wasn’t as exciting as her other stories unfortunately. Thankfully, it did not end on a cliffhanger and actually ended and a few parts were shocking but I just wasn’t a huge fan of the characters. I would suggest to give this book a try because it could be better for another reader, or maybe better for the YA audience.
Holly Jackson can do NO wrong. Once again, I love the characters so much. I thought it knew where this story was going about halfway through, but the way everything wrapped up at the end was SO satisfying.

BOY does this book have plot twists, even the plot twists have plot twists. My heart almost couldn't take the mystery of it all, so much so that I couldn't sleep until I knew what happened to Rachel Price. This was my first Holly Jackson novel, and I've heard so many great things about their writing style. This book plays with your emotions so hard, I've never disliked a character so much to be proven wrong about them. As a murder-mystery genre, I should've been prepared right?
At the beginning of this book, I thought to myself, 'Oh, this is very predictable, I know exactly what happened.' While I was right on some counts, this book still took me by surprise at the ending. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this novel and would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries and detective stories!!!
The Reappearacne of Rachel Price kpet me engaged the entire time. The mystery of what happened to Rachel, and all the twists and turns were engaging and entertaining.
I loved this book! I don’t mind a FMC that’s not the most likeable because I find it to be more relatable than a ‘perfect’ FMC, but I can see why some people might not like Bel. I prefer a thriller with action and excitement throughout over a slow build-up with clues, and this book did that for me. Following the characters on their journey was so fun as Bel takes matters into her own hands to find out what happened to her mother. There were twists and turns that kept me hooked and unable to put this book down.
Thank you Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
5 stars. There's a reason why Holly Jackson is my go to for YA mystery/thriller. And books like The Reappearance of Rachel Price are why. Sometimes thriller books build into the story and mystery slowly. Rachel Price is not like that. Not at all. This book had be hooked from the first chapter! There are so many questions associated with Rachel's disappearance, but there are even more questions associated with her reappearance! I really appreciated Bel as a character. I think Jackson does a really great job writing teens, and I totally felt for Bel with everything she was experiencing. I know people will look at the blurb and it will automatically make them think of AGGGTM, but this is not that book, and Bel is not Pip. Pip starts out the series optimistic and a bit naive. But Bel, Bel wears her experiences right from the start. There were so many surprises and twists and I truly had no idea what direction this book was going to take. For me, that's the mark of a really great mystery. And because of that, this was completely unputdownable for me.
Thank you so much to Jackson, Delcorte, and Netgalley for the chance to review this one early. HIGHLY recommend.
