The Reappearance of Rachel Price
By: Holly Jackson
Genre: Thriller
✨ I could not put this book down! At one point, I expressed to my husband that I could not figure out what the heck was going on. I did end up sniffing out clues on one big reveal. I don’t want to give anything away because you definitely want to go into this book blind.
✨ I realize I love books (like this) where you never are quite sure who you can trust or what different characters motives might be - especially if most of those characters are related / in the same family.
✨ As a big time true crime fan, I really enjoyed the aspect that the story was developing during the filming of a true crime documentary about an unsolved mystery. We all dream to watch those 16 year old unsolved mysteries we can’t stop thinking about (JonBenet Ramsay anyone?) get solved. But this makes you think much deeper about the humanity of the families around an unsolved murder or mystery.
✨ I’ve never read A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder although it has been high up on my TBR. After reading this book, I am certain that will be an upcoming read of mine!

16 years ago Rachel Price disappeared. She was taken from her car where her daughter, Bel, was in the backseat but was too little to understand. Everyone had assumed Rachel is dead, but all of a sudden in the middle of the Price family filming a documentary, Rachel reappears. Bel is suspicious because Rachel’s story isn’t adding up, and decides she is going to get to the bottom of it. But will she find answers she’s happy with?
This might be one of the most interesting books i’ve ever read! I DEVOURED this book in less than 24 hours. It was also the first thriller i’ve read in a while and im definitely going to be reading more. I adore Holly Jackson’s writing style it is so easy to get hooked into and her storylines are always so fun. The twists and turns in this book were so good and I was not expecting it to end how it did?! Please read this when it comes out in a week it was an AMAZING read!
Two words. Jaw dropping… this was my first book by Holly Jackson and it did not disappoint! I instantly fell in love with the main character Bel, who’s a moody teenager finding the reappearance of her “mother” super suspish🙃! The twists kept on coming! Just when I thought I could breathe, bam another one came! This book is easily devourable and a quick read! A must add to your TBR list! Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
This one was definitely a jaw dropper!
Annabel “Bel” Price has notoriety of the true crime variety. Her mother Rachel’s mysterious disappearance sixteen years ago made headlines because she left young toddler Bel in the back of her car before she disappeared without a trace. Bel is the only witness but cannot remember anything about that day. Her father was tried and acquitted of all wrongdoing but many are not entirely convinced of his innocence, which has led Bel to adapt an “us against the world” mentality explains her prickly personality whenever someone tries to get too close.
A new documentary renews interest in the case, and Bel and her family agree to participate so they can pay for her grandfather’s increased medical costs.
But no one could have predicted Rachel’s sudden re-emergence. Her story (and lack thereof) has Bel question how much she can trust her long lost mother and re-examining all of her family dynamics through a new lens.
Don’t want to give anything away but the end of this one was wild! Definitely rapidly picked up the pace in the back half and I loved watching both progression of Bel’s character and her signature snark throughout.
If you liked the good girls guide to murder series you will absolutely devour this one! It kept me on my toes and had me guessing til the very end! I loved the characters and loved the storyline all and all this was an amazing book!
I was really looking forward to reading Holly Jackson's new book, I've read the entire AGGGTM series and Five Survive and I've enjoyed all of them! This did not disappoint!
The moment it begins we're launched into an unsolved mystery and the documentary crew pointing cameras into an annoyed Bel's face. The writing was simple and crisp, the plot had me hooked and I was so sad when I had to sleep instead of continuing. The story was well thought-out and well executed, the ending seemed a bit rushed to me, but I'm willing to look past that because of how much I enjoyed the rest of the book.
I loved Bel so much, she's well-written, witty, and funny. The rest of the characters were pretty great, especially Rachel, seeing her reappearance shaking up the family and reading to see how they develop past it was heart-warming and incredibly entertaining.
An amazing new book from an author I greatly admire, a must-read for fans of Holly Jackson and fans of mystery books as well!
another knockout from holly jackson! i absolutely could not put this book down, i was hooked from the very first page and stayed up all night to finish it. if you liked her previous work you'll love this one as well!
This book was filled with twists and turns and I loved every single one of them. I think that Jackson does such a good job of putting a lot of twists into a mystery without them feeling overkill or like they’re out of place. She knows how to craft an intricate story with complex characters, and I think that really shines in Rachel Price — I guessed a lot of elements of most of the twists, which I personally think is a good thing. I think a good mystery writer leaves bread crumbs throughout the story, and if the reader is observant enough they’ll pick up on them. Jackson once again did a great job of creating reveals that made sense with the story that she had established.
I was shocked by how hard this book hit me emotionally — that’s not to say that I am surprised that I was emotionally invested; I’m always emotionally invested in Jackson’s books and characters, and two of her other books have made me cry as well. The Reappearance of Rachel Price really felt like a gut punch with that big reveal. I had a feeling it would turn out the way it did, but the truth was so heartbreaking that I didn’t want it to be true, and the fact that it was just…even thinking about it now hurts my heart.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price really was everything that I wanted it to be, and it was everything that I’ve come to expect from Jackson’s works. It was high stakes, full of twists and turns, had shocking reveals, and characters that you come to care deeply about. If you’ve enjoyed her previous books, you’ll definitely enjoy Rachel Price!
Holly Jackson is an auto read author for me and this one didn’t disappoint! The queen of YA thrillers is back and this one will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Bel is a force of nature who refuses to give up when questions arise about the reappearance of her mom after being gone for sixteen years while the family is in the middle of filming a documentary of the events. I loved her passion for answers, the growth she had during the story and the absolute mystery that had so many twists and turns!
Add this to your to be read list now!
This was so fun and twisty!! I love mystery/thriller books, especially ones with a podcast (or, in this case, documentary) element. This one was a little all over the place at first, but once Rachel reappeared (haha), it really ramped up and I was so interested in finding out what was going on, where she'd been, and who was responsible.
I do think the twist sort of came out of left field - no real hints or anything along the way, except the ones that are later explained as clear signs of manipulation and gaslighting. I wish there'd been a bit more earlier on about a certain character/situation being shady, to help really make the big twist more impactful. That said, it was still super dark & interesting to see how the characters each dealt with the fallout of the twist.
Bel was such a fun character, and I loved her relationship with Carter - BFFs, cousins, soul sisters, whatever. They were super cute and reminder me a lot of having girl friends in middle & high school!
Thank you to NetGalley for an early copy of this!
I WAS HOOKED FROM THE FIRST PAGE OF THIS ONE! I KEPT TRYING TO GUESS THE CULPRIT IN THIS MYSTERY AND I WAS WRONG EVERY TIME. I LOVED THE TWISTS! THE MAIN CHARACTER BEL IS HEADSTRONG AND SAYS THE FUNNIEST AND BLUNT THINGS. HOLLY JACKSON JUST DOES SUCH A GREAT JOB WITH GIVING LIFE TO EACH CHARACTER. I CANT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH IF YOU RE LOOKING FOR A GOOD MYSTERY THAT WILL KEEP YOU TURNING PAGES NEEDING TO KNOW THE ANSWERS!
Bel’s mom, Rachel Price disappeared without a trace 16 years ago. No one knows if she left on purpose or someone took her. Ever since Bel has just felt abandoned and like everyone will just eventually leave her. She still has her dad. That’s what she holds on to. Now in present time, her dad needs money to take care of her grandfather with dementia so he signs the family up to do a documentary on the disappearance of Rachel Price. Lo and behold, Rachel reappears. It throws their life completely off and there’s so many questions. Starting with the inconsistency of Rachel‘s story about where she was for the past 16 years. Bel has to figure out who she can trust.
Holly Jackson is one of my favorite authors and A Good Girls Guide to Murder is my favorite series so when I saw this book was coming out I knew I needed to get my hands on it & it is worth all the hype!
This is a fast paced, twisty thriller that gives us everything we know and love about Holly Jackson. There's relationships, there's friendships, and there's twists. LOTS OF TWISTS!
This book follows Bel who is in the middle of filming a documentary about her mom who went missing 16 years ago. Just when things are seeming to be normal, Rachel reappears and the questions start to surface.
I loved this one especially the character Bel. I loved the family dynamic and it was a very good young adult thriller. It had twists and turns but also had the heroine figure that Holly Jackson is known for.
This is a must read for any fan of Holly Jackson!

This book was so incredible! I was so excited to read this as I had read AGGGTM last year and loved it. Going into it I had high hopes and expectations and this book did not disappoint. I could not put this book down!
The book follows Bel, whose mom mysteriously disappeared one day without a trace. Bel and her family were being interviewed for a documentary on the case, when one day her mom reappears out of nowhere. Her mom’s reappearance causes tension within the family and questions to pop up about what happened to her. Throughout the book, Bel tries to understand and figure out what really happened to her mom all these years.
There were so many plot twists that I did not see coming. I liked seeing how each of the characters were significant and the small hints Holly added throughout the story. I love that this book had me guessing till the end. If you loved AGGGTM, this book is definitely one to add to your tbr.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Delacorte Press for the Arc!
Bel's mother disappeared sixteen years ago, and everyone still wants to know what happened to her. The Price family agrees to be a part of a documentary that investigates every possible answer. Bel's world is turned upside down again when her mother suddenly reappears. Bel doesn't believe her mother is being completely honest about where she's been and looks for answers of her own.
What a delightful read! For fans of Holly Jackson, who enjoyed A Good Girl's Guide To Murder, you won't be disappointed. This has a similar feel in that the main character is a young girl looking to solve a mysery at any cost. I was able to empathize with Bel's harshness more, though, because their was more of a reason behind it.
The book had a fast pace to it. You're not sure which characters to trust or who is telling the truth. Bel's world is continuously turned upside after she finally thinks she found the answers she was looking for but then finds herself disappointed yet again. I was able to figure out part of the ending but was still completely floored about how Rachel's disappearance came about. I docked a half star because I didn't feel everything was 100% believable (especially the ending at times), but it was still extremely entertaining. Definitely put this one or your list to read soon!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The beginning of this book was AMAZING but the end felt a little haphazard. I may have read it too late at night because I could not sleep that night.
Basically we have a teenage girl who is filming a documentary with her family about her mom who went missing 16 years ago. Except her mom mysteriously reappears but Bel can tell she’s keeping secrets.
Her whole family is acting weird they’re all keeping secrets. Unfortunately most of the twists I was able to figure out in advance. Hence the 4 stars. Also the ending explanation of everything didn’t really make sense or seem plausible, which was frustrating.
Spoilers follow
Rachel shows up and she’s stashing a baby sock and her story keeps changing over what happened to her when she was taken. Bel’s dad is acting weird claiming she keeps forgetting things like opening the window, etc. making her out to be crazy which never made sense to me even with the explanation of it later on.
Turns out Bel’s grandfather abducted her mom. Her mom was getting ready to leave with Bel because Charlie (Bel’s dad) was being controlling and making her out to be crazy. The grandfather didn’t want to kill her so he kept her in an old truck for 15 years? Like how!? She got out because grandpa had a stroke and forgot about her but she left messages in the books he lent her that no one ever got.
Rachel wants revenge. They took her baby and raised it as Bel’s cousin Carter (fucked up) and Charlie won’t get the chance to do to Bel what he did to Rachel. Rachel traps him in the truck because he wanted the grandpa to kill her and then they all get in a scuffle with the uncle and both men die over the ledge.
They blackmail the aunt to leave and they live as one happy family. The documentary crew agrees to cover up the truth.
Absolutely bonkers.

“The people who loved you, the ones who really cared, they would always come back. Sometimes, they even came back from the dead.”
Bel has spent her entire life living in the true crime shadow of her mother’s disappearance, as she was the last one to see her. But as a documentary crew starts to work with her family to tell Rachel’s story, Rachel herself shows back up in Bel’s life and throws everything into a tailspin.
Thanks to Random House Children’s for the ARC for this one, though I forgot often this was classified as a YA because wow, it was dark. I was very intrigued by the plot and concept of this book but I felt like it was drawn out quite a bit in the middle. The twists and turns really started to pick up around 70% and I definitely didn’t see some of them coming, especially because they didn’t totally add up to me. While I really wanted to love the ending, I didn’t feel fully satisfied with how Bel’s life turned out, and who ended up in it in the end. I’ll be taking a break from thrillers for a bit after this one, especially those of the kid variety.
Sixteen years ago Rachel Price disappeared from the side of the road and left her daughter, Bel, in the backseat. As the family begins filming a documentary about her disappearance, she reappears, walking home to her family. However, Bel is suspicious of her story and begins her own investigation into Rachel’s disappearance and subsequent reappearance.
I like the foreshadowing and pacing of the book. The truth revealed at the end of the book makes sense based on earlier events. I also think ‘The Reappearance of Rachel Price’ has an appropriate storyline for a YA mystery, despite being a little underwhelmed by the reveal. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend to others who are a fan of Holly’s other books.
4/5 stars
Thank you to Random House Children’s and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, so I was really excited to read more from Holly Jackson. It definitely did not disappoint! This was one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a twisty, quick read that is hard to put down.
Holly Jackson never ceases to amaze me with her truly amazing writing talent. The Reappearance of Rachel Price was in my opinion one of the best. It was full of unexpected twists and charisma. Thank you Holly Jackson, her team, and NetGalley for allowing me this ARC!
