This book sucked me right in and I tore through it to find out what happened. If you enjoyed the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, you will love this book as well. Highly recommend!
Shut up, Holly Jackson. Shut UP!! (In a “you’re an amazing writer, and I wanna be besties with you and have you write my name into your next book wherein my character vomits *grape* Gatorade in an inappropriate location” way.)
Stop right there, reader. Stop your thinking that you will guess any plot twists. You won’t. You just freaking won’t. (I do wish Bel had a different favorite F word, though, by the way.)
Prepare yourself to be yanked and pulled every which way. You won’t know what hit you. The last third of the book is insane.
I will say, it is a slow burn, but give the story a chance…it pays off. Also, about Bel, the main character? Give her a chance, too. She’s perfected the art of being unlikeable for years. Don’t let her push you away.
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Children’s, Delacorte Press and the inimitable Holly Jackson herself for the eARC and for briefly making me the super cool mom in the eyes of my teenagers and their friends, who cannot wait to get their hands on a copy of this book when it comes out next month. Holly, my girls and I already have a date to meet you at one of your signings in April! (#notastalker)
As always, all opinions are mine alone.
One of Holly Jackson's best!! I absolutely loved the storytelling, interviewing, and all of the twists. This is a binge-able, twisty, mystery for all ages.
"The Reappearance of Rachel Price" is a page turner that begins with a slow start, I found that the beginning started with the introduction of many characters without much development. However, as the story progresses, it gains momentum, leaving readers pleasantly surprised. The sudden reappearance of Rachel Price, long presumed dead, dregs ups many family questions.
Bel, grapples with her mother's mysterious return and the truth behind it, the tension builds, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Despite initial confusion for me the book ultimately delivered an engaging and suspenseful page turner. This books will leave readers questioning the nature of truth and the secrets hidden within families for the right or the wrong reasons.
First of all, I love Holly Jackson, so if you're a fan, this is a MUST read.
This book starts out with the explanation of Rachel Price's disappearance. She had been gone fo 16 years and had just about vanished into thin air. Her family was paid to participate in a documantary about the case. Rachel's daughter, Bel (Annabelle) is our main character and she was only 2 years old when her mother was taken, so she has no memories of her. This doesn't stop folks from asking her about it though. Poor Bel isn't the brightest, I'm afraid, and makes a lot of dumb decisions throughout the book.
When Rachel reappears after 16 years, things go a little wonky. Then the story is full of twists and turns, which navigate Rachel's transition back into her family and the mystery surrounding her disappearance and reappearance.
I loved this book so much! It was a Quick read and I have read this author before and I enjoy all her work.
This was such a dark and twisty tale about family and trust. It is also a very well written mystery thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. I didn’t exactly like any of the characters, but I could sympathize with them and hope that things turned out ok for them. I have read many books with dysfunctional families but I think this one takes the prize as the worst.
Bel is the sole narrator of the story and while I didn’t exactly like her, I could feel for her and sympathize with everything she went through growing up. It is hard to grow up without a mother, but it would be even harder when you don’t know what happened to her. She is pretty smart and clever, but she begins to doubt herself as she finds it harder and harder to get people to believe her suspicions about Rachel. She also is quite lonely as she tends to push everyone away eventually before they can leave her. She has no friends except for her cousin Carter, who I adored.
There is a great supporting cast of characters, both likable and not. I adored Carter, and even from the beginning we know things are not ok with her, but it is not entirely clear what is exactly wrong. But she is the sunshine to Bel’s storms and I loved their relationship. Ash is the sort of romantic interest in the story. He and Bel had a wonderful chemistry and he certainly saw through her tough exterior. Rachel was another character I never fully trusted, but I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she had Bel’s best interest at heart.
Bel’s family, consisting of her dad, uncle and aunt, Carter and a grandfather, was pretty dysfunctional from the get go. On the surface they seemed perfectly normal, but as the story progressed you can see the cracks in the foundation and how quickly it crumbled by the end of the story. There is a scene where they have a family dinner, for the documentary, and that is when you really begin to see how dysfunctional this family really is, and how quickly things spiral out of control.
I don’t want to give the plot away, but except for a slow start to the story, it was pretty riveting. I really wanted to know what had happened to Rachel and whether or not she was telling the truth. I really enjoyed the documentary aspect of the story and some of the ethical questions it brought up. Ramsey, the director, was an interesting character, and he did his best to tell the truth about Rachel while still protecting Bel’s privacy. My only complaint is that the motive for Rachel’s disappearance was a little weak, and where she was all those years was slightly implausible. But other than that I was totally riveted by this story.
If you loved the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series, you are going to love this one as well. If you have not read any books by Holly Jackson then this standalone will be an excellent place to start. Highly recommend to all who love a riveting tale of family secrets with a very twisty plot.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 stars)
As a newbie to the world of Holly Jackson's writing, I dove headfirst into "The Reappearance of Rachel Price" with high hopes and a curious mind. Let me tell you, folks, I was not disappointed. This book deserves a solid five stars from me, no hesitation.
From the get-go, this novel had me hooked. Imagine, your mother disappearing for 16 years, only to suddenly reappear one day. Sounds like something straight out of a mystery novel, right? Well, that's the whirlwind Bel finds herself in. And let me tell you, things get wild.
Bel, now 18, is understandably suspicious of her mother's sudden return. Can she really trust the woman who vanished without a trace for over a decade? With every page turn, I found myself questioning Rachel's story, eagerly trying to unravel the truth alongside Bel.
But hold onto your hats, because Jackson doesn't just stop there. Nope, she keeps the twists and turns coming at you faster than you can say "plot twist." Just when you think you've got it all figured out, bam! Another curveball. And let me tell you, it's exhilarating.
One of the highlights for me was the dynamic between Bel and Carter. Their relationship added an extra layer of depth to the story, keeping me invested in more than just the central mystery. And watching Bel and her mother navigate their newfound relationship? Priceless.
So, dear readers, if you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing from start to finish, "The Reappearance of Rachel Price" is the one for you. Trust me, you won't be able to put it down. Add it to your TBR list immediately—you can thank me later.

So, I absolutely adored A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, and I really enjoyed Five Survive by Holly Jackson. This one seemed like it would have all of the components for a great thriller. Bel’s mother disappeared 16 years ago and is presumed dead. However, she reappears right as the family begins filming a documentary about her disappearance. The mystery here was good, but my biggest problem was the pacing. This one didn’t really keep me on the edge of my seat like some of her other books have. The action definitely picked up at the end, and the reveal of the mystery was definitely a surprising one, but I just didn’t connect to this one quite as much. I didn’t really love any of the characters (the main one included), so it was hard to root for them.
This definitely wasn’t a bad book, not by any stretch. Just wasn’t my favorite by this author.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price is Holly Jackson's latest book centered around the disappearance of Bel Price's mother Rachel. This book was a ride from start to finish. Not to spoil but this book was everything I wanted and more. Bel was a very interesting protagonist to me. While she may come off an unlikable, it's hard NOT to root for her. There's a reason why she is the way she is and it all traces back to her mothers disappearance. The writing, characters, and PLOT TWISTS GALORE were all done well. I was hooked from page one and couldn't put the book down. Holly Jackson just has a way with writing and even though you're expecting a twist, she still manages to catch you off guard.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House for the early copy!

The Reappearance of Rachael Pricy by Holly Jackson
Publication Date: April 2, 2023

📖📖 Book Review 📖📖 My first Holly Jackson book and I was so excited!!! Right away, I was hooked. Bel’s mom, Rachael Price, disappeared without a trace in 2008. Now in 2024, a film documenting the mystery is in production. And sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction…

holly jackson, your mind truly must be the most terrifying place to be because to come up with something like this and i LOVE ITTTTTTT. your brain is so beautiful. this was a bigger mind fuck than 'as good as dead' (third good girl's guide to murder book) and i was up until two am finishing this book.
this book makes you feel like you ARE bel because of how frustrated you feel knowing relatively no one believes you but then again the way it leaves you questioning your own instincts. i felt like it was interactive in that sense. does that make sense? i felt like i was living bel's life and trying to fill all the holes myself. also (little, light spoiler) she's kind of a klepto ? and i love her for it because my little sister is the same way (they both take super unimportant things as keepsakes).
i also have to say that i am MAINLY a romance reader but the way holly jackson writes the subtly of romance in a way that you don't even notice it, she doesn't let it overpower the main theme of suspense, thrill and mystery and it never feels out of left field when it is mentioned or unnecessary is so beautiful. this run on sentence definitely didn't make sense but the gist is that i love you holly jackson to infinity an beyond and your brain is beautiful and your craft is very loved by me.
y'all, the way you have NO IDEA where the hell this plot is going and BOY does it take you on a ride. i need you to read this YOU'RE NOT READY (but also i need this to be out already so i can shout about it with other people)
i would just like to say that i love holly jackson's commitment to the idea that men [REDACTED] and women [REDACTED] is so monumentally important to me and part of my lore. thank u goodbye
thank you netgalley and random house + delacorte press for the eArc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!!
Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. This is another hit from the author of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.
This book exceeded all my expectations! I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was coming. There was so many plot twists and by the end I was angry that I didn’t see them. This book was phenomenal and I have yet to be disappointed by any book Holly Jackson has published.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC!
I’m so bummed that I didn’t enjoy this book. I had trouble connecting to any of the characters. The first 70% of the book was boring and repetitive to me. The last 30% did have more action and intrigue, but I still found the reveals to be lackluster and predictable.
I will definitely still be reading from Holly Jackson as she has written some of my favorite books, but this was a miss for me.
I’m a huge fan of Holly Jackson and loved all of her prior books especially the Good Girl’s Guide To Murder series. I was super excited to find out that she had a new book coming out which is The Reappearance of Rachel Price and this book did not disappoint! It’s such a thriller that you don’t know where the book will take you! Loved it so much and I want to thank NetGalley, Random House, and Delacorte Press for early access to this book for my honest review!
I really enjoyed this book! I feel like it was a constant question of if Rachel was Rachel, who was the good guy, and who was the bad guy. It was definitely a good mystery. I read Good Girl's Guide and that was more YA than this book, so I could see the difference between the genres as well.
When Bel's mother Rachel reappears out of thin air after being unaccounted for during the last 15 years (and during the filming of a true crime documentary, no less) Bel has a lot of questions. Things about Rachel's story just don't *add up.* As Bel digs further into Rachel's reappearance and catches her mother in a web of lies, she'll get some answers she never bargained for. Bel is a jaded young adult (for good reason) and I enjoyed her characterization as a departure from Jackson's previous novels. This is a thriller about dark family secrets and the lengths one family will go to to save face. I enjoyed it!
A dark twisty tale full of family secrets and suspense.
Rachel Price disappeared 16 years ago. While a documentaty team is filming about the details of her disappearance, she miraculously reappears! When her daughter, Bel, who has felt abandoned by her mother, tries to come to terms with some of the inconsistencies in Rachel's story, she finds out that her family has been hiding a lot of information all of these years!
This novel is great for readers who like suspense and some family drama.
I had every intention of starting this book today and reading it over the course of a few days… long story short that did not happen and I read it in under 12 hours.
This was my very first Holly Jackson read and I truly did not know what to expect. I knew she was very well know and constantly raved about but I have yet to read any of her books until now. The Reappearance of Rachel Price will have you HOOKED from the very beginning. The loose ends and bread crumbs will leave you thinking you know what’s going on, forming your own thoughts and theories in your head, when really you have no idea what is truly going on. Every page turn will leave you on the edge of your seat and needing answers.
This family holds secrets like no other and Bel Price will get to the bottom of them. I loved seeing her determination and love for her family drive her throughout the story. She is strong, she is resilient, and she will get her answers. She will not leave one leaf unturned. She will do whatever it takes to solve the disappearance and reappearance of her mother.
This is truly one of my favorite mysteries I’ve ever read. I now need to go read AGGGTM and that whole series. Holly Jackson has quickly become one of my favorite mystery authors!!
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Holly Jackson, and Random House Children’s Delacorte Press for the opportunity to be an ARC reader! This was an arc that I was not expecting to receive but I’m so thrilled that I did!🖤
