This one was hard to put down.
Bel's mom disappeared from her running vehicle when Bel was two. The car was running with Bel in the back seat. Her father was arrested for her murder and found not guilty. So it's always just been Bel and her dad. She was very close to him and he was only one of the people he trusted. The other was her younger cousin Carter. Bel's father agreed to do a documentary about Rachel. Most people thought she was dead, but there had been some sightings over the years. Bel thinks her mom just left her and she has major abandonment issues because of it. She also steals things to deal with her feelings. While filming, Rachel shows back up. She's dirty and wearing the clothes she had on when she went missing. Bel is in shock and brings her back home. Rachel says she was locked in a man's basement the whole time but that she never saw who it was. Bel finds inconsistencies in her mom's story and is sure that she's lying. She starts investigating with the help of a young documentary crew worker. Bel doesn't trust Rachel at all and pushes her away. Ash, the crew worker, is the only one who really believes Bel and wants to help her figure everything out. Not just for the documentary, but also because he starts to like spending time with Bel. He's another person she pushes away though. In the end, there are a lot of secrets that come out.
I enjoyed the pacing of this one and wanted to keep reading to figure everything out. I had multiple theories throughout the book.
I gave this book 4 1/2 stars.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my earc.
Holly Jackson cannot write a bad thriller. I was so intrigued, I literally couldn't stop listening.
Our main character Bel has grown up without a mother. When she was a baby, she was found in her mom Rachel's running car after disappearing from a local mall, but her mom was gone. She is raised by her dad, with her aunt, uncle, cousin and grandfather who recently had a stroke and cannot remember a lot. Now, 16 years later there is a documentary being made about her disappearance. In the middle of filming, Rachel reappears. As Rachel tells her story to different people, Bel notices that her details sometimes don't add up or match. Is she just in shock, or is she lying?
Bel is the likeable unlikeable character I feel Holly Jackson writes well. She doesn't have any friends besides her cousin Carter because she pushes everyone away with the fear that if she doesn't do it first, they will abandon her like her mom did. Carter is very sweet and really has a connection with Bel despite her abrasive attitude. Bel also kind of forms a relationship with one of the people working on the documentary. He puts up with her rudeness and push-away personality and she hates it and it's great.
The plot of this book was (for the most part) so exciting, even when what's happening isn't super exciting. There was one point when it felt a little draggy, but it's also a pretty long book. At the beginning, we get to meet the family and learn Rachel's story before Rachel reappears which I liked. After Rachel appears, the story gets so suspicious (since we are seeing the story through Bel's eyes and she is suspicious) and I just HAD to know what was going to happen next. There were so many sketchy things that a lot of the characters did or Bel thought they might have done. There were twists and turns and just when you thought you had something figured out, the opposite happened.
After finishing and thinking back, there were a lot of things that pointed to what actually happened, but Jackson did a great job of adding them organically into the story so you wouldn't think they were clues.
There was one thing that wasn't perfect to me. It kind of made me sad, but I don't want to say what in case it gives anything away. But the same thing in Jackson's other books made me feel the same way. It really makes an impact on the book, but almost tries to make the reader feel uncomfortable (but not in a bad or weird way if that makes sense).
I will be recommending this to anyone who likes thrillers or mysteries and even people who don't!
The plot of this book had potential, however it wasn’t carried out in a way that pulled me in. The twist was entertaining, but the ending felt rushed, and the characters were unlikeable. I would say that this is a pretty good YA mystery, or a good mystery for someone just getting into that genre, however it just wasn’t for me.
Bel Price's mom disappears when she's 2, leaving Bel in her car with the heater on in the middle of winter. No evidence of what happened. Not a single trace of where she went. It ignites a frenzy in the true crime community, everyone wondering... What happened to Rachel Price?
Fast forward 16 years, Bel has become a closed off 18 year old, too jaded and fearful to let anyone get close. Bel and her dad are now the stars of a documentary. The Disappearance of Rachel Price. Bel has little interest in the documentary. After all, she was only 2 when her mom went missing. There were no memories for her to dredge up. Suddenly, Rachel Price reappears and brings Bel's world crashing down. Where had she been for the last 16 years? Bel is intent on finding the truth, no matter the cost.
This was the first of Holly Jackson's books that I'd read and I have to say, I was sucked in IMMEDIATELY. The attention to detail, the twists and turns. She held my interest from the beginning to the end.
Excuse me while I move Holly Jackson's entire catalogue to the top of my to be read pile.
Thank you to Random House and Delacorte Press for the advance copy! This was an amazing read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children’s Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
(4.5 stars) I think fans of Holly Jackson’s mysteries should be very excited for this one! Similar to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, The Reappearance of Rachel Price follows another fiery female lead (it’s clear she loves writing badass young main characters) and centers around an unputdownable and very surprising mystery. It did take me 5-6 chapters until I was really invested in this story, but once I reached that point, I was HOOKED.
Since I was immediately sucked into the mystery of AGGGTM, I do think I prefer that series to this standalone. But besides the short time it took me to become immersed in the story, the very few spelling or grammatical errors, and one line right at the end (does anyone know what a “midnight shush” is??), I had a really fun time reading this book! I would not be disappointed at all if The Reappearance of Rachel Price was also made into a movie or TV show one day.
I love AGGGTM but this book might have it beat it out of the top of favorite Holly Jackson.
Bel’s mom disappeared 16 years ago leaving behind Bel and a lot of question. Now is so back and their stories aren’t adding up.
I don’t know what I say without giving away the whole entire book. This book is a read in one sitting. A cannot put down until the book kind of book. I was sitting on the edge of my seat while Bel was uncovering all the secrets about her mom.
This book is faced paced go go until the past page and wow did she do that ending amazingly!

I absolutely love Holly Jackson and her writing is so amazing. She can suck me into a story from the beginning. This book was no different.
The story begins with Bel Price who is 18 years old. Her mother disappeared 16 years ago. There is a documentary interviewing and reenacting what had happened all those years ago.
Soon after filming, and as the name of the book suggests, Rachel Price returns. Rachel of course doesn't know where was was and who took her. Bel is skeptical about everything that Rachel does and says.
We go along the journey of Bel figuring out if Rachel was truly taken or did she chose to leave her as a baby. It was a wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed. The ups and downs that the Price ladies went through I went through as a reader. I was not disappointed.
Thank you to the publisher Random House Childrens and Netgalley for the advanced reader. I appreciate it so much.
The phrase— you can’t pick your family— has never rung more true for out main character, Annabel “Bel” Price. Sixteen years ago when she was two, her mother, Rachel Price, disappeared without a trace. Now Bel has been living in her shadow for her entire life. Her father, Charlie, agrees to participate in a documentary based on his presumed dead wife bringing in a whole new layer of mystery and intrigue when one day Rachel appears as suddenly as she disappeared. This is not the joyous reunion an outsider would imagine with Bel unbelieving and willing to do anything to uncover the truth about her mother’s disappearance and reappearance. Some things are better left unsaid.
Fans of the Good Guide’s Girl to Murder series will love this book. It is more of the same as the original series that started it all for Holly Jackson— well-developed characters, slow and twisty reveals of what actually happened with a satisfactory ending (for whom you may ask- well that depends on you).
Some people may like Bel right off the bat, but I see her as an intentionally unlikeable character. It serves the plot well but at times can slow the story progression and make you cringe. It’s just more realistic.
While there will never quite be the love Pip and Ravi had in their series again, the character Ash, both a sidekick and love interest all in one, adds a layer of levity and reason. I wish he had been more prominent in the story but he serves the purpose necessary for the progression.
I’ll admit that I was reading a bit for Ash, but in the last 20 chapters when everything started coming together, Bel’s characterization was finally justified. Again, this story is about her— her family and its secrets and the things in between.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a captivating young adult thriller. I found the first 50 pages or so to be a little slow as the story was building, but after that it is very fast-paced and will keep you guessing.
Holly Jackson did it again!! Dare I say I liked this even more than AGGGTM?
When I tell you I was hooked from the very beginning, I mean it! One day, Rachel Price mysteriously disappears, leaving her 2 year old daughter, Bel and her husband, Charlie without answers. Fast forward 16 years, Bel and Charlie decide to participate in a documentary about Rachel’s disappearance. But not long after they start filming, Rachel unexpectedly shows up, wearing the same red shirt and black jeans she was last seen in. When Bel starts to notice inconsistencies in the story of her disappearance, Bel decides to do some investigating.
The synopsis of this book ALONE had me at the edge of my seat, but Holly Jackson did an amazing job with this story. I haven’t stayed up late to read something in a while, but I seriously could not put this book down. I’m talking heart pounding, stressed, sitting up in bed because it was so tense at some points!
I would say the only reason this wasn’t a 5 star was because I had a hard time connecting with the Bel. She was extremely jaded and kind of crude, and it almost felt unnecessary at some points. BUT I do think those characteristics were important to the story and some people will find her relatable!
I am SO EXCITED for this book to come out and for more people to read it! Thank you so much Random House Childrens and NetGalley for the ARC!!!
As a fan of the series AGGGTM, I had really high hopes for Rachel Price… and it did not disappoint, if anything, it surpassed my expectations!!
The Reappearance of Rachel Price starts of with the mystery of “what happened to Rachel?” and a documentary crew wanting to find the answer to it, 16 years after her disappearance. We follow Bel, Rachel’s daughter, as she navigates not only her emotions about her mom’s disappearance but also, how it has shaped her to be who she is being raised by her father (who’s always been a suspect in the disappearance).
As the documentary starts evolving, the “biggest” plot twist is that Rachel comes back “from the death” and it throws the entire Price family in for a loop. Bel starts finding inconsistencies in Rachel’s story and starts an investigation of her own.
Avoiding spoilers, all I can say is that this novel really took me on a rollercoaster. Just as I thought it was going to calm down, more action and plot twists! Now, I live for family drama and this book provides more than plenty of that! At first the length of the book felt a little intimidating, but it really built out a great story, with a fantastic pace, and it all had a purpose. The second half of the book really grabs you and does not let you go until the last page.
Now that I’m done, I wish I could spend some more time with Bel! Such a funny, sarcastic, and family-centric character. This book is a 5 star for me as I thoroughly enjoyed it every step of the way! Well done, Holly Jackson!
Another un-put-downable book by Holly Jackson. I was up all night to finish it and I was not disappointed! Bel’s mother disappeared when she was two and now she’s involved in making a documentary about it. No spoiler to say her mother reappears but, unlikes everyone else, Bel can’t accept the story her mother is telling everyone and she is determined to figure out the truth.
Holly Jackson’s done it again!
I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Crying towards the end there, but we got it! I love the documentary aspects of the story, because it added that key feeling that I loved so much from AGGGTM series! I related to Bel so much, and I love her character development!
One thing about Holly Jackson is that she will have you questioning everybody and their dog. I had so many theories while reading, and the twists that would arrive in this book? WOW. Typically, I get a bit overwhelmed when a story has so many twists, but Holly wrote this in such a way that it just flows together so nicely. It didn’t seem overwhelming at all! I was on the edge of my seat, pulling an all-nighter and just hoping I didn’t wake up my boyfriend while sobbing during the 80-something percentage mark lol.
Long story short, this was an amazing read. Just as great as I thought it’d be, if not even better. “The Reappearance of Rachel Price” by Holly Jackson releases on April 2nd, 2024, and I cannot wait for y’all to read this!!!!
*A special thank you to Holly Jackson, as well as NetGalley and Random House Children’s for this advanced readers copy opportunity. Holly Jackson is a writer who’s done more for me than she’s aware, and I was so excited to read this in April once released. Thank you for making me feel seen and special and giving me the opportunity to read this early!
I could not put this book down once I started reading it. I read it in one day and talked to so many people about it. I am blown away by Jackson’s ability to make sure all parts of the story are tied together because this is a wild story–so suspenseful and full of family secrets, lies, and crime!
Huge thank you to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for allowing me to read this early!
I have been so eager to read this, as a huge fan of the Good Girls Guide Trilogy. Having another book in this universe is so exciting and most definitely worth the wait! While it isn’t exactly the same as the epic story with Pip, this is an action packed story with characters you will absolutely love. The characters are well developed and the plot is extremely strong. This had me hooked and on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. This did not disappoint!
*4.5 Stars*
I was so excited to get this as an ARC. I love Holly Jackson and A Good Girls Guide to Murder and this book was no different. The concept of a true crime documentary made for a thrilling mystery as the documentary team tries to figure out what happened to Rachel Price who disappeared over 16 years ago and left her daughter in the car. In the middle of their filming, Rachel reappears saying that a man took her away and locked her in his basement but her daughter, Bel, realizes that Rachel's story is full of inconsistencies. The mystery now takes a turn to figure out what truly happened to Rachel Price.
This book was fast paced and filled with so many twists and turns, I didn't know what was going to happen next. I loved Bel and how snarky she could be. Her character's development over her investigation with Ash was perfect for this book. The ending was such a shock, and I loved the conclusion of the investigation.
If you enjoy true crime documentaries that is full of intrigue, this is the perfect book for you.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price comes out on April 2nd.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's Publishing for the opportunity to review The Reappearance of Rachel Price. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I just love me some Holly Jackson! GGGTM is one of my most fave series! &&& The Reappearance of Rachel Price does not disappoint! This twisty & suspenseful book follows Bel (a strong, determined female MC) as she navigates her mother’s reappearance after being presumed dead for 16 years. For lovers of true crime, podcasts & documentaries you’re gonna love this! I easily could have read this in one sitting. A solid 5 stars from me!

My students have LOVED Holly Jackson’s mystery books in the past, and I was very excited to get to read this.
This is a great YA mystery, it’s got a lot of twists, but it doesn’t over-rely on them to tell the story like a book in this genre could. The characters are really interesting and the plot is very propulsive.
I am very excited to brag to my students that I got to read this early and then suggest it to them when it comes out in April.
oh wow! holly jackson did it again! im not surprised tho! this book was so good and interesting. the family dynamics was very interesting and i couldn’t stop reading. bel is definitely one of my new favorite main characters, she was just so real, and also relatable. i loved loved loved this book, and im just so excited for all of you to read it because it is definitely sooo good!!! and also i can’t wait to talk with someone about it!!!! april 2nd, save the date!!!!
This was a good young adult mystery thriller.
The plot was fast moving and the mystery had me wanting to know how everything played out. I enjoyed seeing Bel’s character develop over the course of the book and was super intrigued by the premise. There were just enough twists throughout the story to keep my guessing what the outcome would be. Definitely a must read for fans of Holly Jackson.
