*Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for a gifted ARC in exchange for my honest review and to PRH Audio for the gifted ALC*
I keep trying to talk about this book and it's like a keysmash every single time. It's just SO GOOD. It gives all of the AGGGtM vibes, but everything is so much more fun when the person whose murder you're trying to solve reappears. Just delicious. The audio is tense, filled with intentionally bad British accents, and unputdownable to the point where I literally *had* to open my ebook copy so that I could inject it into my brain faster. The last 10% is peak Holly Jackson in the best and worst ways, but god I loved it. If you want to read a great YA thriller, this is the one.
Thank you to Delacorte, NetGalley, and Holly Jackson for the ARC!! Holly you will truly always be famous.
Holly Jackson is an autobuy author for me, which is a delight for me as a reader, but also means my expectations for her are set QUITE high! Luckily, she always lives up to them. This is a fun and wild ride. I didn't like it as much as Five Survive, which I thought was darker and more intense, and I didn't find this one quite as inventive as some of her other work. However, I really just couldn't down. It's so compulsively readable, and the characters at the heart of the story are really lovable (even if Bel does make some... insane decisions at times). I wish this had wrapped up a tad less neat, but overall... You have done it again Ms. Jackson. 4.5 stars!
thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for a review!
in seventh grade, long before agggtm was the tiktok sensation it has become, i was 13 and at my grandparents' house in nebraska with a 100 degree fever. i picked up the book, read it in what must have been two hours tops, declared it the best mystery i had ever read, and since then i have read everything holly jackson will publish.
i 'got there first' legitimately for agggtm, but simply because of how arcs work, i am reading this one before it gets popular also. this means i win. i continue to win. this book was awesome.
this is exactly the twisty mystery it promised to be, and best of all, it's all getting figured out by one teenage girl with no connections but a lot of deep rage. ash, her cameraman sidekick, calls her 'deeply unpleasant' when in fact that is her secret to getting things done. (i am sad they don't really get together in the end by the way. i mean i wasn't going to expect a romance book but i did think they were cute. tiktok will agree with me in approximately 26 days just you wait)
i am trying to write a good review for this but i absolutely don't want to spoil the mystery! so highest praise i can give: stop reading my review and go read the book. set aside a solid couple hours for it because you won't want to put it down
every time i read a book i get so immersed with the main character and start thinking like them, so i would’ve never have expected that ending!! i thought it was a good mystery and i love how while reading Jackson dropped hints that i picked up.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC!
If you liked "a good girl's guide to murder" you will love The Reappearance of Rachel Price. The characters have the same shrouded in mystery quality where you as a reader can't be certain if you know their real personality. Meanwhile there is a thick plot line here that swoops you in and drags you through just waiting to find out what has really happened. This whodunnit is perfect, not gory, suspenseful, and a lot of fun to read.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson was a wonderful YA mystery. I could not guess where the story was going, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The characters felt realistic, and I was rooting for Bel the whole book. I loved this story. My only complaint is that I felt like the ending dragged on too long, but this did not have much impact on my enjoyment of the book as a whole. It was one of my favorite YA mysteries I've read in a long time.
Holly Jackson can truly do no wrong in my eyes. As I write this review, I think this should be my public thank you letter to Holly Jackson for single handedly getting me out of the worst book slump I’ve been in to date. We’re talking a book slump that I was convinced I would never read another book again.
Bel Price’s mother, Rachel, went missing 16 years ago without a trace and has left a cloud of mystery over their family since. Bel’s Dad agrees to film a documentary on her disappearance in turn involving Bel.
This story was so much more than a YA mystery. The plot twists in this book gave me whiplash in the best way. It hooked me from the very first 3 chapters and had me guessing until the very last. This story is one of loyalty and justice and trauma. Bel’s character was so perfectly written and HJ explained having human teenage emotions on paper as if I had written them from my brain itself. Holly Jackson is now an auto-buy author for me and I have read all her published work to date. She has such an amazing gift and I love the stories from her brain. Even though her characters are YA, there is something we can take from all of them.
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this arc! 🤍
Amazing!!! Arguably the best Holly Jackson book so far!
Bel Price didn’t know, how could she? She was only 2 when she was found in her mom’s car on the side of the road with her mom nowhere to be found. 16 years later a film crew has came to interview the family & get their opinions on what they think happened, everything’s fine until Bel runs into Rachel Price. Rachel’s story is unbelievable & inconsistent but nobody is weary about it except Bel. Bel digs deeper into Rachel’s lies promising to find out the truth herself, but if you dig too deep you won’t like what you find, it can even be deadly.
This was a great story! Great characters & great storyline! Definitely a page turned! I read over 8 hours straight, not being able to sleep until I reached the ending! There is nothing like thinking you have it figured out then having multiple twists back to back making you question everything! I wish there had been a little more epilogue! I wasn’t ready for it to be over when it felt a new story was just blooming!
Holly Jackson writes some of the best murder mysteries out there, girlie goes above & beyond.
I truly thought I had it all figured out and that the end was not going to surprise me but I was honestly shocked at how deep the twist went!!
10/10 recommend this when it comes out this April!!
This is actually my first Holly Jackson title, though my students eat her books up. I really liked the idea of this story with a missing parent instead of a missing teen/friend/sibling/etc. I'm usually quite good at figuring out who done it, but this one took me much longer than most to figure out. Highly recommend to any school or public library and will be purchasing it for my school.
I was provided a digital copy of this title for a fair and honest review.
I am once again very impressed with the way that Holly Jackson crafts a YA thriller, and how she knows how to keep a few steps ahead of me in her mysteries. She lays out the clues in a very deliberate way, and has enough misdirection or subversions of my expectations to make for some really satisfying twists in this story of a teenage girl whose mother disappeared when she was a baby, and who suddenly reappears just as she and her father and extended family have agreed to participate in a documentary about the case. I really liked Bel as our main character, not because she was particularly likable, but because I totally bought into her character and how she reacts to her mother's sudden return based on the trauma and loss and resentment that came with her having disappeared for so many years. I liked how her resentment makes her somewhat unreliable, and how the mystery of where Rachel Price was, and how and why she has returned, gets all the murkier because of it. I also really liked her relationship with camera assistant Ash, a young man on the crew who is a very fun foil to her because she is so prickly and he is so quirky, it's kind of a nice gender bend from what is usually expected of this kind of relationship. And I also liked how shrouded in mystery Rachel was after her return. You know something is off, but you can't quite put your finger on what, which builds the suspense all the more. THere were a couple things that I didn't QUITE buy, final reveals and plot twists wise, but overall, I really enjoyed the mystery and found it satisfying.
THE REAPPEARANCE OF RACHE PRICE is another fun and entertaining YA thriller from Holly Jackson! I'm always keen to see what she comes up with!
Holly Jackson is an auto-buy author for me so I had really high hopes for "The Reappearance of Rachel Price" and she definitely exceeded them with this book!
You're going to want to clear an afternoon before picking this one up, from start to finish I was pulled into this story and binged the entire book in one session. It has a gripping True Crime feel to it that had me flipping pages eager to solve the mystery right alongside the FMC Bel.
I think fans of AGGGTM are going to going to enjoy this standalone YA Thriller, I'll definitely be recommending it!
Thank you Holly Jackson, Net Galley and Random House Publishing - Delacorte Press for providing me with an ARC of this book.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Bel Price's mother Rachel Price disappeared 16 years ago. The mystery around her case has since became everyones obsession with podcasts and books written about it. Now, Bel is eighteen and her father has agreed to sign on for the filming of a true crime documentary centered around her mother's disappearance which brings up secrets from the past. All of the sudden, Rachel Price reappears!
I found it so unique to write a thriller where someone, who everyone presumed to be dead, comes back to life. Bel begins to question her mom's previous disappearance and reappearance as everything in her life unravels. This story was filled with so many. twists and turns! Everything came together so well in the end of the story. I also loved Bel's character growth throughout the story. What she learns throughout her experiences was impactful for me as a reader.
A huge thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Scratches that GGGtM itch perfectly, while standing firmly on its own. Probably should have read this slower so it would last longer...
This truly is the best book Holly Jackson has ever written! Right from the beginning, the story grips you in a way that will not make you put down the book. The story is funny, twisty and very mysterious! I keep guessing until the end and my guesses were not even close to the truth.
16 years ago, Bel's mom disappeared and left 2-year old Bel behind in her car. She is the only witness but cannot remember what has happened. No one knew where Rachel Price went, why and how she disappeared. Bel assumes her mother to be dead. The story has become well-known among true crime fans and now, 16 years later, Bel's family has agreed to film a true crime documentary about the disappearance of Rachel Price. Just as they have started to film, the unimaginable happens and Rachel reappears. Everyone should be excited! But something is off. Bel cannot let go of that weird feeling in her gut, not fully trusting her mother's story how she disappeared on her so many years ago without any explanation. As the filming goes on, Bel decides to find out more about her mother's reappearance and discover the truth on her own.
This book was genuinely so good. It was very hard to put down, the twist was really unexpected and the writing was phenomenal. The mystery and tension in this book were incredible. Holly Jackson just knows how to grab her readers attention!
Bel Price has lived most of her life in the shadow of her mother’s disappearance when Bel was 2. Now 18, a documentary crew has decided to look into the mystery of what happened to her mother Rachel when suddenly Rachel reappears much to the shock of everyone. But Bel is extremely suspicious of Rachel and her intentions. Why has she returned after all this time? Was she actually where she said she was the last sixteen years? As the lies unfurl and the mystery unravels Bel gets closer to the truth of what happened and finds out who the people closest to her really are.
Oh this was so fucking fun. I could not put this down. The clues are all there but there’s enough misdirection to keep you guessing until the reveal.
Holly Jackson has done it again.
no one writes mysteries like holly jackson does.
this book had the perfect set up from the start it established the characters, minor hints and/or red herrings that just hooked you and made you theorize until the very end, still not preparing you for the numerous plot twists that will make your head spin and goosebumps appear. bel is also incredibly well written- a jaded, headstrong teenager with a snarky sense of humor who you empathize and relate to and is starkly different than the other main characters shes written. i cant wait until people can read this, it has elements that i love about agggtm and five survive but is able to stand on it’s own, i see why she favors this book a lot, i hope she’s proud 🤍
thank you random house childrens books publishing for this arc!
The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a page-turner! Holly Jackson is becoming the queen of YA mystery and thrillers. She creates a plot that is twisty, and even though she drops hints throughout the book, the reader still gets thrown for a loop in the end.
Bel, a senior in high school, was only 22 months when she was found in an abandoned running car parked haphazardly on the side of the road. Her mother, Rachel, was seemingly abducted, and for the past 16 years, everyone has assumed she was murdered. Bel's dad, Charlie, has now agreed to take part in a documentary about the disappearance of his wife because he is in financial need. After filming has begun, Rachel reappears with a story that doesn't quite add up to Bel. Matter of fact, several things aren't adding up to Bel, such as why her dad isn't excited to see her mom, or why her mom keeps saying she's been gone 15 instead of 16 years. Of course, our protagonist, Bel, will set out to solve the mystery, but it will bring some dark family secrets to the surface that she may wish could stay buried.
I didn't really root for any of the characters until the last 30-40% of the book. Bel is prickly. Charlie and Rachel are both hard to figure out. There just isn't a likable character in the first half, except for maybe Ash! I did think the resolution was near perfection and wrapped up the story nicely.
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children's Publishing for this ARC.
Bels mother Rachel Price disappeared 16 years ago when she was only 2 years old. They are doing a true crime documentary when she suddenly reappears. She says she’s been held in a basement all these years but Bel has her doubts when she’s caught in multiple lies.
This was a jaw dropping read with many twists and turns. My favorite of the year so far.
Thanks NetGalley and Delacorte Press for this eARC that will be released April 2, 2024!
This was a thrilling read from the author of the AGGGTM series. The story was unique and intricately plotted, and I'd recommend this to anyone who reads mystery or thrillers.. While I enjoyed the podcast element in GGG more, the documentary element added another layer for fans of True Crime. The main character is out of high school, so this is a good title to recommend for those looking for older teen/new adult thrillers. There is some violence and some emotionally upsetting content, and similar to Jackson's other books there is minimal romance and no sex.
