There is no doubt that Holly Jackson is a masterful storyteller! I was hooked from the very beginning and just couldn't put it down. The setup was fascinating as two-year old, Bel, was found in the backseat of her mother's car in her car seat. The car was running, and the heater was on but here were no signs of her mother anywhere. Sixteen years later, a woman in tattered clothes and scars shows up claiming to be Rachel Price, the mother of Bel. The twists and turns along with the Price family's dark secrets keep you invested in learning the truth to what happened on that fateful night when Bel was found alone. Is this woman really Rachel Price? Why is her father not happy that she has returned home? Where was she for the last sixteen years? Is she telling the truth? This one will take you for an enjoyable ride as the plot thickens and discoveries are made. If you like thrillers, then this is the book for you.
This was a really great book and Holly Jackson did a fantastic job at bringing her idea to life! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, and Bel was such a complex and interesting person to read about, along with her traumas. Despite having my own predictions for the book, it had twists that I never would have expectedt, and kept me on my toes for a majority of it. I think the concept of a documentary was a really great idea to incorporate, and made the whole thing more fresh and exciting. Despite this, I think my criticism for it has to do with how slow certain parts felt to me, which brought me back to reality. Even so, I would definitely recommend that everyone check this book out!
i love this book, i knew i was gonna love this book not only because i enjoyed the good girls guide to murder series but this authors writing is so addictive, page after page, i could not put this down!
From the blurb, you know this book is going to take lots of twists and turns. It absolutely delivers on that. I started reading it while staying in a haunted hotel, so I am not sure if the eerie tone I associate with this book is due to the author or the setting I was reading in, but I had a hard time putting this book down! There is an air of mystery and the unexpected throughout that raises many questions as you read. Bonus: all of the questions get answered! Very solid...until the very end. I have mixed feelings about how this wraps up, but I'm not sure of another way it could have ended. Every other ending I can imagine is worse. So, take that with a grain of salt.
Overall, an incredibly enjoyable, engaging read with relatively few characters to keep track of and tons of detail-oriented clues that pan out in the end. Very solid.
When Rachel Price reappears after mysteriously disappearing when her daughter Bel was two, Bella doesn't trust it. It's too big of a coincidence-- they've just started filming a documentary about her disappearance. And why doesn't anyone else notice that Rachel's story doesn't add up? And why isn't Bel's beloved father happy to see his missing wife? Bel investigates with the help of a young filmmaker. The twists and turns will keep the YA reader hooked. A must read for fans of The Good Girl's Guide to Murder series.
When Annabel “Bel” Price was 2 her mother Rachael disappeared. Bel was found safe in her carseat but her mother seemingly vanished into thin air. Sixteen years later Bel and her family begin filming a documentary about the disappearance, when to everyone’s surprise Rachel reappears. Rachel says she was kept in an unknown man’s basement and was randomly let go one day, but Bel is extremely suspicious of her story. Bel along with the camera crew investigate her story uncovering plot twists, secrets and the bonds of family.
Thanks to Random House Children’s and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book!
This was an incredibly frustrating book in the best way. Bel would do all the worst things to reaffirm her belief in what she thought was happening, and I would always get frustrated by it, but it would always get results. And I’d remind myself “this is a traumatized teenager who lost her mom and whose dad was arrested and is still suspected of murder. I’d be unhinged and do bad things too”. The ending was so, so sweet though. I think this is up there with AGGGTM, for sure.
Holly Jackson has done it again with her gripping new thriller The Reappearance of Rachel Price. From the opening pages, she hooks the reader into the mysterious disappearance and shocking return of Rachel Price, seen through the eyes of her daughter Bel.
The premise is tantalizing - a woman vanishes without a trace, only to reappear 16 years later with a harrowing story of what happened during her absence. But is she telling the truth? Jackson keeps the reader guessing throughout, parceling out reveals and new questions in equal measure.
Bel makes for a capable and sympathetic protagonist as she tries to unravel what happened to her mother while cameras roll for a true crime documentary. Jackson deftly explores the strained family dynamics and fallout from Rachel's disappearance. She ratchets up the tension through alternating time periods and well-timed plot twists.
While the final revelation didn't quite live up to the masterful setup for me, it was still an immensely satisfying and chilling conclusion. Jackson's talent for misdirection and leaving you doubting everyone's motives is in full force here. She toys with our perceptions of truth and deception.
Overall, this taut psychological thriller is a worthy follow-up to Jackson's acclaimed A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. With its cinematic atmosphere and urgently paced mystery, The Reappearance of Rachel Price cements Jackson's status as one of the most entertaining voices in YA suspense fiction today.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House for the e-arc!
As a devoted fan of *A Good Girl's Guide to Murder*, diving into *The Reappearance of Rachel Price* was a must, and it didn't disappoint. Jackson weaves a captivating plot that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
While Bel may come off as unlikeable at times, Jackson's skillful portrayal delves into her trauma, offering insight into her complexities.
As the story unfolds, the tension escalates, with twists and turns that leave you on the edge of your seat. The buildup towards the climax is intense, delivering a satisfyingly suspenseful conclusion.
Overall, *The Reappearance of Rachel Price* is a must-read for fans of the genre.
Another thrilling read from Holly Jackson!
This one took me a while to get into. I found it had a pretty slow start. Lots of build up. It absolutely picks up, though, and definitely towards the end I was getting STRESSEDDD. Holly Jackson is so good at making me nauseous + invested. Plot-wise, this was interesting and fun. The psychology that was going on in the background—abandonment/commitment issues, gaslighting—was interesting. Still not sure how I feel about the ending; it felt a bit unrealistic. BUT I loved how things tied together and the pieces fall into place. Holly Jackson is always super smart with her clues.
I can remember if this is her signature writing style (if so, I don’t remember it from AGGGTM—but it has been a while) but the comma splices/weird non-complete sentences bothered me. I like it sometimes, especially in action scenes, but it happened throughout the whole novel!!!
Anyway, stayed up too late to finish this one!
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book :) This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2024 so I was super excited to receive an arc! I have somewhat mixed feelings about this book because the premise of the book sounded so interesting but I found the FMC so unlikable it made the first half really difficult to read. That being said I think that made for a really nice character arc and the book had lots of twists and turns I didn't see coming. Not as good as AGGGTM but still enjoyed it!
4.75 stars, rounded up
This was such a god book! It kept me on my toes and had just the right amount of foreshadowing. Loved the ending and will definitely be recommending this!
I’m a big fan of Holly Jackson.
I think would you hear her name you think of Good Girls Guide to Murder which is another series that I really loved.
So I was really excited to be able to read this new book by her.
I thought it was so good. It was very fast paced. I never got bored. I finished it in 24 hours. I just had to know what happened. She kept me engaged the whole time. I never got bored at all and constantly wanted to be reading. That to me is a sign of a good book.
I actually liked the main character. I didn’t think I would at first. She isn't actually all that likable, but the characteristics were made to protect herself. I actually really liked how direct she was and to the point.
I did not see the twist coming. Not the big twist. There was part of it that I suspected, but not the over all big endings.
I think if you are a fan of Holly Jackson, that you will absolutely like this book!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this arc
I was hesitant going into this because I loved the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, but I didn't really enjoy Five Survive, but this book blew me away. It kept me engaged the entire time and the last 25% was absolutely crazy. I was guessing up until the very end. It's twisty and I could never decide who to trust and I loved every second. I would highly recommend picking this up!
I have never read a book by this author but my daughter has so I was very interested when I saw it come up on NetGalley, I have to say it was very easy reading for me and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Holly Jackson is a great author and I just might have to go back and read those books my daughter has read and recommend this one to her.
Bell is a 16 year old that has had to deal with so much more than any young adult should have to. When we meet Belle, she is in the process of giving an interview for a documentary that is being done on her biological mother's disappearance. When Belle was just an infant, she and her mom were followed and her mom was taken. Everyone has assumed that Rachel Price has been killed since nothing has been found of her for 16 years. Bell has been raised by her dad, Charlie, from the time he was cleared of any wrong doings in the disappearance of his wife.
Once day when Bell is our for a walk, she sees someone off in the distance and can't believe what she is seeing. Is that her mom or is she just hoping that her mom is in the distance? When Belle gets close enough, she realizes that it is her mom. How in the world has Rachel returned after all these years? Once the police have been called and things sort of settle down for the night, Belle gets to hear Rachel's story. She claims that she has been held in the basement of a guy that she doesn't know and can't identify because he never showed her his face. After 16 years you would think that he would have slipped up at some point.
The more time that goes on, the more that Belle has doubts that Rachel is telling the truth about where she has been for the past 16 years. When Belle digs into stuff that she believes is not the truth, she finds more than she has bargained for. The twists and turns that are in this book left me with my mouth wide open. Holly Jackson did some amazing planning with this one and I know that you ware going to like reading this one as it unfolds as I did. Such a great read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advanced copy of this book.
Bel has grown up with her doting father after her mother, Rachel Price, disappeared and left her alone in a car as a toddler. She has always wondered if her mother just left and if so, why? When a documentary film crew arrives in their small New Hampshire town to investigate Rachel's disappearance, everyone is surprised when Rachel returns. Bel is suspicious of Rachel and finds several holes in her story leading to her own investigation into Rachel's disappearance. The REAL truth is more shocking than Bel could ever imagine!
The Reappearance of Rachel Price has great teen appeal, a compelling mystery, engaging characters, and a bit of romance. Highly recommended!
THIS BOOK! Anything Holly Jackson writes will have me in a chokehold. I also need to continuously remind myself to never open another one of her books late at night. She does a phenomenal job of intertwining light horror elements into her thrillers. I will say that there was a lull in the book right before the end and the reveal was a very lengthy piece of dialogue. But, outside of those things, Jackson does an incredible job of weaving subtle hints to the reader throughout the book. Best YA thriller/mystery author!
Those who love Holly Jackson’s writing, you will not be disappointed. If you are new to her books, get ready for a fantastic ride.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price is full of twists that you can’t see coming. Complex family dynamics that make decisions making even harder than they should be. Drama, thriller, mystery.
While filming the documentary of her mom’s disappearance, Bel is faced with deciding if the woman claiming to be her mom, is really Rachel Price!
I love how Jackson incorporated the documentary aspect in the book. I feel the audience will connect with the social media/filming side of things.
thank you so much to netgalley & delacorte press for this arc!!
this book has confirmed for me that anything holly jackson writes i can confidently say is going to be a 4/5 star read for me.
our main character, bel, had severe trust/abandonment issues which made her a pretty unreliable narrator throughout the book … i had no idea whether she was crazy or she was a genius but not knowing is what kept me on my toes the entire time … as always when reading one of holly’s books i was shocked when the mystery was answered & did not see it coming AT ALL …. overall this was so so good & such a good mystery ….
the only thing i didn’t like & why it wasn’t a 5 star for me is the way it ended … it felt so rushed & i felt like some aspects of the story were wrapped up too quickly to really be a satisfying ending
still though … loved this!!
"The Reappearance of Rachel Price" is a captivating thriller about family ties, memory, and what happens when a person becomes a mystery.
Bel is a complex main character, often infuriating and unlikable but guided by tunnel vision and family loyalty. Every character within this novel is more than they seem, and unravelling who each of these characters really are is as much of a mystery as the disappearance and reappearance of Rachel Price.
