This was a really suspenseful novel that kept me on my toes. I’ve read one of holly Jackson’s other novels and really
Enjoyed it. Bel’s mom disappeared when she was little and now being 18 has reappeared but no one really knows where she has been and Bel doesn’t trust her.
**Book Review: *The Reappearance of Rachel Price* by Holly Jackson**
Holly Jackson's *The Reappearance of Rachel Price* is a riveting blend of mystery and psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. When Rachel Price, missing for five years, suddenly resurfaces, her small town is thrown into turmoil. Jackson masterfully unravels the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface as Rachel's reappearance triggers a series of shocking revelations. With its intricate plot, well-developed characters, and unexpected twists, this novel is a page-turner that fans of suspense won't want to miss. Jackson's ability to maintain tension and suspense throughout makes this book an unputdownable read.
4.5 stars!
Rachel Price has been missing for 16 years until she finally returns but her story doesn't quite add up. Her daughter, Bel vows to discover the truth and expose her in the documentary that is being made about the case.
Holly Jackson never misses! It was a bit slow at first but when it got interesting, it got interesting! It had me on the edge of my seat with so many twists and turns. I love how Jackson doesn't beat around the bush but is still YA. I thought everything wrapped up nicely in the end, I even teared up a little. Definitely one of my top reads so far this year!
Thank you to Holly Jackson, NetGalley, and Publisher for this ARC.
A perfect shocking mystery and was stuck to my seat the whole time! This was truly a fun read and I would definitely reread a million times.
My students always adore Holly Jackson's books and I know this one will be no different. Such a fun thriller! Couldn't recommend this one more!
holly jackson does mysteries SO well. her characters are always captivating, flawed, and you can't help but to root for them. i have to admit, i was not a big fan of bel at the beginning of the book, but her growth throughout was so apparent and i adored her by the end. my favorite thing about the way holly jackson writes stories is that i'm always changing my suspicions alongside our main protagonist, and it feels like i'm unraveling the mystery at the same time bel is. i do think the second half was a lot stronger than the first, but i am truly convinced that holly jackson cannot write a bad book!!
Thank you for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was a stay-up-late sort of read that flew by! An interesting look at family and the stories we tell ourselves (and others!). If you like your reads twisty and surprising, this is the book for you. As a first time Holly Jackson reader, I am almost certain I will be back for more!
I personally think I liked this book better than the AGGGTM series! This one was super twisty and fast paced.
Fan’s of the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series will not be disappointed in Holly Jackson’s newest book, The Reappearance of Rachel Price. The story is about 18 year old Bel who’s mother, Rachel Price, disappeared when Bel was two. Bel has grown up under the mysterious shadow and scrutiny of her mother’s disappearance with her father and struggles with finding her own identity other than being Rachel Price’s poor daughter. Now 16 years later, a documentary film crew is in town making a documentary about the disappearance until, miraculously, Rachel reappears on the side of the road. Rachel’s story has some holes and Bel doesn’t quite trust her, so now it’s time to figure out what REALLY happened to Rachel Price.
Holly Jackson’s writing is superior. It really is. This book, and Bel, had a darker and seedier vibe than A Good Girl’s guide to murder, and it added a lot of ambiance to the unraveling of the mystery. I loved how she flipped the traditional mystery on its head while investigating a reappearance instead of a disappearance. Her books are so cleverly plotted it blows my mind. I think my favorite part of Holly Jackson’s writing though, is the way she handles her characters and their moral ambiguity. It is so well crafted, human, and relatable, while creating and supporting these insanely plotted mysteries. The twists in this one had me reeling, especially the ending. Holy cow. Holly Jackson is the queen of modern mystery and I will read anything she writes. She is a master.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for. a copy in exchange for an honest review!
I found The Reappearance of Rachel Price to be a very quick read with Jackson's trademark style and cleverness. I thought the plot was interesting, and I would never have been able to guess the twists that came towards the end of the story. However, I did find the characters incredibly unlikable (which I think was likely the point), but that made it hard to connect to them and really care about the story as it developed.
This was another fantastic YA mystery from Holly Jackson. The story begins with Bel and her family being filmed for a true crime documentary about her mom’s disappearance 16 years ago, but things take a turn when her mom, Rachel, reappears and wants to pick up where things left off. Throughout the many twists, I was constantly doubting the motives of every character. No one is one-dimensional and every one is a suspect, which made for a fantastic read.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Random House Children’s publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I don’t think Holly Jackson can write a bad book.
This book! What.
I was definitely shocked and didn’t see any of that coming. At all.
But why would she go into the home with him?! I mean for her daughter but surely we could’ve figured out a safer way for them to reconnect and find them guilty 😅
Anyway loved it. Completely caught off guard. So good.
The minute I saw that Holly Jackson had a new book coming out, I had to read it. I LOVED her Good Girl's Guide series and I hoped against hope that I'd have another MC that I would just absolutely fall in love with.
Unfortunately, this book was just okay for me.
I think my main problem was Bel. She was so unlikable for me, and I think when I finally started to come around to her it was too little too late. I also feel like all the quirkiness of the characters from Good Girl's Guide was so fun, yet the quirkiness in this novel was just really grating on me.
I did end up liking Bel more towards the end of the novel, and while I did kind of like certain aspects of the end, I also found it to be completely ridiculous. Some of the explanations for why things happened the way they did, and the aftermath of how those things lead to other things, just seemed wildly ridiculous. And while Jackson's other books are a little farfetched, this just was not something I could be okay with.
The execution was just not great. It was okay, and I liked it enough to finish it. But I hope her next book is better.
I loved everything about this book! I was absorbed by the get go, but then again anything Holly Jackson writes is impeccable! I had so many questions along the way and the author does a fantastic job at tying up all the loose ends by the end of the book. I loved it so much I bought it a physical copy to add to my HJ collection!
✅What I liked
🔪 Unique concept, not something I’ve seen in YA much
🔪 I wasn’t expecting some of the twists that we encounter which made this a fun read. I finished it in two sittings only because I had work the next morning.
🔪 The book design is freaking amazing!!
❎ What Didn’t Work For Me
🔪 I didn’t like Bel. She felt flat to me until the last few chapters and by then it was too late for her to be redeemed in my head.
🔪 Holly Jackson is a master at sensory details as evidenced by the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, that power isn’t as strong in her standalones.

I loved the idea of this but I had so many problems with it. The main character is completely unlikeable and not nearly as smart as she thinks she is. Her mom comes back after being missing for 16 years and no, her story doesn't make sense, but it also doesn't make sense for her daughter to be parsing every word looking for a way to make her out to be evil. The story was longer than it needed to be, especially considering that most people weren't really likeable. However, I did enjoy the end, so that was a bit of a payoff. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
This pains me to say but this was just okay. I love Holly Jackson's books, but this one didn't completely work for me. I think there were a few issues with the book. The main character, Bel, was very difficult to like. There were several twists and turns in here, and I can't say I anticipated how the ending would actually play out, but it also almost felt like there was way too much going on. There was definitely way too much family drama in here, like I was drained by the end of the book. I felt like I just didn't get all the answers and closure I'd hoped for either. It did keep me entertained and interested all the way through though, so there's that.
This was such a good thriller. Holly Jackson really knows how to keep you on your toes. And that plot twist!! I can’t wait to see what she puts out next.
4.4⭐️
Imagine with me, if you will… Your Mom, that you’ve never known, shows up after 16 years of mysteriously missing (Kidnapped? Dead? Left? No one knows.) Now you have to fit her back into your lives, share a home, clothes - and she’s trying to “play Mom” but she knows nothing about you.
This story is unique and entertaining. The family is raw and unpolished, full of animosity and issues. And Rachel, a beloved Mom that an entire nation fell in love with after her mysterious disappearance, comes packing secrets. All signs are pointing to “she faked her disappearance.” She’s desperate to win her daughter’s (Annabel - Bel, not Anna) affection, while her daughter is feeling threatened over losing the life she knew. To add to the unsettled situation, the Father, having been blamed for her disappearance, mysteriously goes missing after her return!
Bel has no choice but to take matters into her own hands, become an amateur sleuth and prove that her Mom is lying and is responsible for her Father’s disappearance. But it seems Rachel is always one step ahead…
This was my first Holly Jackson book. While the writing style felt a bit childish and amateur at times, it was written perfectly for the character, Bel, and did a great job of showing growth. Perfect for YA. It felt like a long book to me, but a nice steady pace and some really juicy answers at the end. A nice ending that you likely won’t see coming.
Thanks to NetGalley, Random House Children’s, and Holly Jackson for providing me with a complimentary ARC to review!
Perfect for fans of murder podcasts or Only Murders in the building. Another fast paced myster my from Holly Jackson.
