Holly Jackson you did it again. I loved this book. Bel is so quirky and was fun to get to know. I enjoyed getting to know her and how she's deals with living in the shadow of her mom's disappearance. The story took some turns that I didn't see coming. I can't wait to see what else Ms. Jackson decides to write.
I absolutely loved A Good Girls Guide to Murder so when I found out about The Reappearance of Rachel Price, I couldn't wait for it and had high expectations. This book did not disappoint. It had me second guessing the whole way through.
AMAZING!!! Holly Jackson does it again with this story about a girl who’s lost her mother only to find out about the lies her family has been entangled in since her mother disappeared. Ever since AGGGTM Holly Jackson is an automatic read for me and she has yet to disappoint. I can not recommend this book enough to anyone and everyone!
If you didn't like the last book in AGGGTM you probably won't like this one. If you did, this book is defs for you! This is a strong comeback after Five Survive (which was good, but not Jackson's best work by any means). This book had me gripped. I didn't feel like I could trust ANYONE - I was even suspicious of our MC at one point. A great time was had by all. Not quite as magical as AGGGTM for me, but still another great YA thriller from Ms. Jackson and I can't wait to see what's next for her and she will continue to be an auto-buy author.
An engaging read that I thoroughly enjoyed! Had me on the edge of my seat until the end! Highly recommend and will purchase several physical and digital copies for library collections. Thank you!!
I did not realize this was considered a YA title until I started to write this review. It does feature a teenage main character but it did not feel young or juvenile to me. I was thoroughly engrossed in the Price family's story before and after Rachel disappeared and reappeared. The twists and turns kept me guessing (incorrectly!) and did not disappoint.
If you love true crime podcasts and documentaries and playing armchair detective on unsolved mysteries, this is a great title. Highly recommend.
Thank you to Random House Children's | Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the advance reader copy. I am required by law to disclose this.
I was surprised with my rating of this book. The initial 60% of the book was quite slow for me and it took me two week to get through it. However, I read the last part of the book in just one day. While there were some aspects of the story that I did not enjoy, the big reveal towards the end of the book did keep me intrigued and I couldn’t put the book down. That said, I felt underwhelmed once I finished it. I’m not sure if my expectations were too high, the ending felt rushed to me or if it just wasn’t what I was looking for. The MFC Bel was not very likable in my opinion, her attitude just didn’t resonate with me. When Rachel reappeared, I was expecting a more climatic moment, but it just felt a bit weird. Although Bel has faced trauma and has had to deal with it for her entire life, I expected her reunion with her mother to more meaningful. However, I’m still a fan of Holly Jackson and will read any book she put out. Overall, while it wasn’t my favorite, I still think it’s worth a read.
Thank you, NetGalley, and Random House Children’s, Delacorte Press, for providing an eARC of The Reappearance of Rachel Price. This review is being left voluntarily, and all opinions are my own.
I couldn’t wait to read Holly Jackson’s the reappearance of Rachel Price about a girl whose mom has been missing for 16 years and while doing a documentary she returns. The girl is a Annabelle she likes to be called belle and is irritated that her long missing mother keeps calling her Anna the name she used to call her before she went missing. Bell is insufferable she’s petulant rude greets kindness with awkwardness ignorance and a stupid attitude. She doesn’t believe her mom story and totally defends her dad and in the interim uses one of the filmmakers Ash to help her prove her mom is lying about her disappearance. In the beginning I really despite not liking bell wanted to know what the real story was and by the time I did I was just irritated that I wasted my time reading this book I do believe this will be the end of my relationship with Holly Jackson her characters feel like a beat down to read about and I am just over it I don’t know why authors like to put such unlikable people in their books because with no one to root for it really loses the momentum not to mention the weird writing style in this book I got tired of hearing about belle in her stomach about her choices and somethings took a couple of sentences to get through where other decisions took pages and pages it just was all too much in a book I really did not enjoy after everything was said and done. Especially with that wholly unbelievable ending. I do want to thank the publisher for my free art copy via NetGalley please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I thought this was really well written and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I think it will find readers at our library, so we will definitely be purchasing for the collection.
3.5 stars. I've come to the conclusion that some YA is just not for me. I want to give this book a fair review given that I'm a 38 year woman and I really do want to love YA books!
Pros- I like the little romance element, it seems Belle needed some outside support to deal with what is going on in her family.
Writing is very YA, a little cheesy and dramatic for my tastes but I think that's the YA element.
Good mystery!
Cons-
This was way too long. Why is this book 448 pages? The ending where the mystery wraps takes forever to wrap up. The audiobook is over 16 hours long! My opinion is it very much could have been edited down.
Maybe this is YA writing but I do read adult fiction and I feel like there's not as much cursing in the adult books I read. The cursing seemed unnecessary at times, just like it was thrown in haphazardly.
Overall, I didn't hate this reading experience, I would say I liked the book but I don't know I'd recommend it to any teenagers I know. Probably would be better for a college age adult. Just my opinion!
Thank you to netgalley and Delacorte Press for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a gripping book from page one! I loved that any time you thought you figured it out… something else happened that made you change you mind - and then repeat this at least 20 times.
The twists were perfectly executed and placed at the perfect times. I throughly enjoyed the writing style and enjoyed that there was some witty banter to help bring in a bit of a break from the tension.
Highly recommend if you want something that keeps you guessing and something that you’ll want to finish in one sitting.
Literally so good! Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. This was such a great quick read and I throughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait to read more from Holly Jackson🩷
This book was so freaking good. ALL OF THE PLOT TWISTS AT THE END. I DIDNT KNOW HOLLY JACKSON HAD THIS IN HER! I loved this book. It was so heartwarming in the end as well. This book is one of my favorites of the year and might include some of my favorite characters of the year.
I enjoyed this mystery but found it about 100 pages too long. I respect the author's choices, but found myself wavering near the end, ready for the conclusion.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
I just finished reading The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson. What a thriller – super twisty with an ending I did not expect. While I enjoyed the story, I just do not understand why young adult writers have to constantly have their young characters use the “F” word. It is distracting and frankly, unnecessary. It keeps it from being a recommended suspense in a school library.
Holly Jackson does it again! I love her YA lighthearted yet packed with a punch books. They are perfect for all types of readers. This book pulled me out of a reading slump, and I felt so invested in figuring out what was going to happen by the end. I will recommend all of her books to any type of reader. Young or old.
This book really needed to be cut down in length. The pacing was slow and sometimes repetitive. Otherwise I liked the story line and all the family drama.
Summary: Bel has lived in the shadow of her mom's disappearance her whole life. Though Bel was the sole witness to her mom's disappearance, she was too young to remember any of the details. Though Bel wishes everyone would just leave her and her dad alone, a new documentary is being produced and Bel is begrudgingly playing a role in it. While filming, Bel's mom, Rachel Price, returns after being gone for 16 years. Bel thought life was difficult through the filming, but with her mom back her life will never be the same.
Thoughts: Holly Jackson has done it again!! This book kept me on my toes until the very end. Every time I thought I had a theory ironed out, a new wrench was thrown into my ideas. Be sure to listen to all of the tiny clues, even if they seem unimportant. I'll be honest at the beginning of this book I was not a fan of Bel, because she just was mean to everyone but her dad and cousin, Carter. But as time wore on and the more Bel hung out with Ash, she dove into trying to solve the mystery and open herself up to trusting others outside of her circle. So many twists and turns throughout that made me want to keep reading to see how everything turned out. Don't not miss out on this one!!
Thank you to Netgalley and Delacorte Press for the #gifted copy of the eArc!
This is a perfectly fine book, but it's easily my least favorite of the author's books. I did enjoy the true crime element of the story, and I thought the author did a great job reflecting the range of emotions that might come up in a teen whose mom reappears after being gone for most of her life. At the end of the book it's interesting to think back on the breadcrumbs in the story, because that is well done as well. However, there's an overplayed speech choice by the author used across many characters that made me irrationally annoyed, and it's probably 100 pages longer than it needs to be. I'll continue to pick up books by the author but this won't the be the first one I'd recommend.
Whoa! After reading the AGGGTM, I was pumped to start this Holly Jackson book. IT DIDN'T DISAPPOINT! I loved how Bel wasn't drawn into the fanfare of Rachel's reappearance but questions it. There were so many ways this story could have gone wrong but I was enthralled from Bel's first interview to the very last page. I was left guessing until the end and will need to do a reread in the near future!
