voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. It’s been a long time coming and just as April and Jack got them figured out, it’s been almost taken away again. And not only the two of them, but Riggs, Cal and Bob as well. Fabulous conclusion to a great series that - unfortunately - is done now. A huge showdown has many previous characters of different series jumping into action as well. Very well written.
The long awaited story of April and Jackson. I loved that Jackson was the most intense out of all the men. It's my favorite trait in a hero. I also just realized that Jackson and April were the leaders of their friendship groups. It seemed fitting they were paired together. The epilogue for all couples at the end was also very satisfying. Great series!
“The Lumberjack” is the last book in the Game of Chance series and follows Jack and April as they find their happy ever after.
Jumping into this series at the end wasn’t ideal. The instalove was incredibly fast, but apparently they have been dancing around each other for three books. The suspense plot moved very slowly until the last quarter of the book when it kicked into high gear.
I appreciate the epilogue as a nice ending to a series. I might have enjoyed this better if I had read the rest of the books.
Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC. Opinions are my own.
I jumped into this series at the very end but now I need to go back and devour the rest! I binged this book in one night and couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book! Thank you Netgalley for the ARC
"The Lumberjack" is the 4th and final book in Susan Stoker's Game of Chance series. Like most of Ms. Stoker's more recent books, I liked it but didn't love it. I feel like her older series had less insta-love and more build up to the relationship. That part seems very rushed in her more recent works. So, in "The Lumberjack", April and JJ have known each other awhile, but their getting together still felt so fast. And the antagonist's motivation seemed rather flimsy and farfetched to me. And the way the focus was more on how great it was that April delivered a baby but not on the fact that June just had a freaking baby without her husband in a random cabin was kind of insulting to all women everywhere who have given birth. It almost felt like that plotline didn't belong in JJ and April's book. Maybe I'm biased because I was putting myself in June's shoes, but that plot device felt too heavy and intimate to just be a sideline in another couple's book.
The spicy scenes were pretty good - Ms. Stoker is surprisingly graphic sometimes (in a good way, I think), but there's usually only 1 big scene in each book and I think they could benefit from more. :) I'm also not a huge fan of crossover characters, especially when there's a ton of them - it just feels forced to me. Like, look at all the characters I wrote, together in one room!
All in all, this isn't my favorite of her books or series, but she's still an automatic read for me.
This was the last of the 4 men who were held priswith oner while they were in the service that found his HEA. Jack or JJ knew April as she ran their office with precision. She made sure everything was up to date and got them to their appointments. She swerves to miss a moose and looses her memory. Her ex-husband shows up and tries to convince her that they are still married but she remembers that much, just can't remember the last 5 years. Jack and April were very attracted to each other but for many reasons didn't act on it. While she was in the hospital, Jack made her feel safe and calm. The other 3 men and their women came to visit, but she had no memory of them. What they didn't know is that a man with a grudge was determined to harm all the women to make them suffer and then kill them.
The story was full of drama with some romance finally. Tex even got into the mix along with men we have read about in other series. It was a very good story full of suspense. I loved the epilogue 10 years later that gave us a glimpse of how everyone is doing.
I got this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Loved reading the captivating and engaging story. After April's car accident, she loses her memory, and JJ takes care of her at his place. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting love story by the amazing and awesome author, Susan Stoker.
The Lumberjack is the final book in the Game of Chance series by Susan Stoker. A case of amnesia helps JJ finally face his feelings for his business manger, April. As the two struggle to regain lost memories, it becomes clear that someone is targeting the POWs turned lumberjacks and their families. The team must come together one last time to save their freedom.
This final chapter of the series hits all the right notes! I loved it!
The Lumberjack is the 4th and final book in the Game of Chance Series by Susan Stoker and she finished this one off with a explosive ending and an even better epilogue. As I’ve noted before, these books can all be read as standalones, but I found them more enjoyable reading the series in order because all the characters make appearances in all the books. Again, the most enjoyable part of this entire series for me was the “found” family aspect and how much these characters will do whatever it takes to protect, serve and love their “brothers” and their significant others. I knew JJ and April’s story would be the ending to this series but I didn’t know that Ms. Stoker would bring it all together so nicely. If you’ve read her other series, you’ll definitely recognize some of the secondary characters that show up in this one. I don’t want to ruin your enjoyment of this final book, so that’s all I’m going to say! Another highly recommended romantic suspense by Susan Stoker. I'm very grateful to have been given an opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book through NetGalley.
The Lumberjack by S. Stoker is book 4 and the final book in the Game Of Chance Series. 4soldiers, 4 women and this are their stories.
April and JJ's story already started in book 3, The Hero. I recommend to read the books in order. There are cross overs.
So April was injured and suffered from amnesia. Her last 5 years, just gone. JJ is her employer, but karma showed them time isn't endless. They start dating ahem, lets call it dating. But the showdown is already in the works. Sorry not sorry no spoilers here.
A fitting finale with well deserved heas for all couples, an entertaining well written story, unputdownable, suspenseful.
The Lumberjack is the fourth and the final book in the series game of chance. It really is a fast pace story and is developed around a former POW and his secretary. The characters have been through hell of a lot for which to understand better you have to read the previous 3 books in the series.
I absolutely adore april as how she is progressive and how even after losing her memories she isn't someone to just sit and cry. She really is a strong lady and to describe better is a boss lady who is totally mature about her decisions and isn't someone to always go with the flow but proses everything logically, doesn't let people manipulate her even though she lost her memory. I liked how the author made her character seem so real, the need, the reaction everything screams confidence. She is someone who thinks that woman needs to be valued and seen.
JJ or jack is on another level who as a former pow has gone through a lot but stood like a wall and took everything life threw his way without even bulging. I like how he gave his friends hope as a spark in the dark even though they all were technically dead, by having a simple conversation "what do you want to do when you get free". He really has a heroic and strong mindset.
I like everything about this book, it's not like some clichés, it's a reality that hardship could crush you and the fact that he loves april but is afraid to confess as he thinks he might lose the newly divorced April and so he waited for 5 years only to let her decide even though he admitted he was an idiot cause life is short and he nearly lost her. He is really something else during her recovery phase and I loved it.
This book does tell us how things can change 180 degree without anyone expecting it, so you need to cherish everything including the people you love and to make a move before it's too late. I definitely recommend it.
April is so much more than she gives herself credit for, trust me. She’s the heart and soul of the company and the best friend/sister that the four men running the company have ever had. So when April’s in danger, they’re all in to help her. But one more than the rest, and not just because he wants April. JJ knows life is short and this is the final push to get him to try to have some sort of forever with April. And boy, do they get that forever.
The anger and hate behind the danger is disturbing, but that’s in part due to just how real it feels. Someone who has a twisted view of everything wants others to hurt as much as possible, and it takes many familiar faces to thwart those efforts. While the men are thinking about how to solve the most critical puzzle they’ll ever face, April is helping to move pieces on the board to align and help. So when I say that April did a decent portion of the saving, I’m not joking. She is the strong friend everyone would love in their corner and the loving support everyone wants by their side. Especially JJ. And he’s finally got his forever with her, so I’m sad that this series is done. Yet I’m happy to have been along for the ride all along!
Susan Stoker is very much a comfort read for me. This had the right amount of cheesy campiness and real feeling to be a good time. I thought they were a cute couple and love the protectiveness. The friendships between both the men and the women were very nice.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
The Lumberjack is a suspenseful, amnesia, small town workplace romance.
Jack and his teammates moved to Maine and now run Jack's Lumber a lumberjack business.
April is his Office Manager. She is a older than Jack, and has been in love with him for years.
When April is in a horrible car accident and temporarily looses her memories, Jack realizes how much he cannot live without her and decides it's time to acknowledge his feelings.
This was an exciting, emotional read and a great end to the series.
I absolutely loved this series! But honestly, this story seemed a bit rushed to me. It was still good, but it was lacking something the others in the series had which is a shame because this is the relationship that played in the background up until it became the front relationship in this story.
April manages the office of JJ’s business. Both have secretly wanted the other one even though neither have acted upon it and have even denied their feelings. It takes April getting into a car wreck and losing her memory for JJ to decide he wants her and he’s not playing around anymore.
But someone is trying to ruin their happiness…
Two people who have been (not so) secretly longing for each other finally realize the intensity and depth of their connection when a potential fatal event happens, in the “The Lumberjack”, by Susan Stoker.
Jack and April are great characters; the super protective and possessive hero who is so certain of his unending love for the older heroine is surely a magnet. Add pragmatic, respectful, thoughtful and tender dimensions to the former soldier personality and who could resist?
Besides, it’s always cool having a hero pinning so deeply for the heroine and showing vulnerability and insecurity when he’s not yet sure of her feelings. JJ’s devotion is total.
I liked the process of April’s memory returning; it seemed realistic and well written.
Watching the leads coming to terms with their mutual feelings, and admitting they’d been trying to avoid and ignore them, was sweet, too.
I also appreciated the before and after with JJ and April and how the indecision becomes certainty when a near tragedy occurs. The fact there was a strong mutual feeling before and neither acted on it was interesting, too.
Stoker’s universe of deep fraternal bonds, fiercely loyal friendships and romantic relationships is attractive.
I liked how the average woman is attractive and how the heroine has a range of attributes and skills that go beyond the usual external beauty.
Some dialogue seemed stilted and they sometimes talked as fictional characters (calling the others who came to help “badass men”…), or maintained puerile conversations during high danger situations.
The proclamations about “our women” and “our men” seemed repetitive, and the same with the dialogue about feelings and emotions.
I loved the characters of this book. I was drawn in immediately. As someone who has not read the series I didn't feel lost coming in at book 4 I felt like Susan did a great job of explaining who the characters were and where the story was going.
There were parts of this book that I enjoyed, and parts that I didn't. I want to preface this to say that I hadn't read the prior 3 books in this series, and I think that affected my perception of these characters and their love story. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of the story and whatever backstory these two characters may have had in previous books. The instalove was very strong with these two, and there was a mutual unspoken attraction that kept them separate up until the heroine was hurt. Once that happens, in chapter 1, the hero becomes over-the-to0 protective. I did enjoy the bit of suspense that came with the story (who is after her/him, and why?) but it took a while to get to that. I would try another romance by this author, unless over-the-top instalove is her writing style.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for a review.
This was a kismet gift from NetGalley. I just finished books one and two and was trying to decide if I wanted to keep going. I liked these books, although these alphas are pretty intense. These characters are interesting, but felt a little bit 2 dimensional. This is the last book in this series and this might be the one time you need to read all the others books in the series. I felt like this was leans heavily on the plots of the other books that you will definitely get more enjoyment out of this book if you know what the deal is going into it.
This book was a cross between a cheesy action movie and a love at first sight romance thriller, and it was a trip but it's definitely not my favorite type of story. The characters can be unbelievable or the total plot can be unbelievable but I don't do well when both of those things are so out there.
I've been waiting for the JJ/April book since the series first began, and I enjoyed their story. Like all of this author's books, this one doesn't hold back on the frightening situations and nail-biting suspense. We also get to see some heroes from some other series make an appearance to help get the bad guy. The book brings a nice conclusion to the series, with an epilogue that focuses on each of the couple 10 years into the future.
