I was immediately interested in this book because I have the same name as the main character!! That's always fun haha. But beyond that, this was a fun read about girls being able to do anything boys can do, but better! I absolutely loved the theme of empowerment in this book. Unfortunately I found it a bit hard to get into, and I found myself having to push through quite a bit to get to the end. One thing that did make me want to keep reading was the tension between Sienna and Burke. It was very well done.
Meh, this was an ok book in my opinion. We have our 17yr old FMC on a far away planet that colonized by people stuck in regency times. Women are to be meek and not seen or heard and do all the things the men tell them to do. Well our sort of spunky Sienna doesn’t want that life but does want that life but doesn’t want to disappoint her family but her family sucks (besides her brother but really he kind of sucks too because he takes advantage of her love for him in having her impersonate him so he can make his art). The romance is a few (scandalous if caught) kissing scene but really none because nope you can’t touch anyone without loosing your virtue. Not sure if I’ll continue the series or not.
I have a lot of feelings about this book. I love science fiction and I love historical (Regency/Victorian) fiction. This had both, however, it didn't seem to have enough of each for me. The story started out fairly strong - teen girl is prim and proper on her alien planet but secretly longs for more. She incorporates a little "She's the Man" as she tends to masquerade as her brother sometimes to get a bit of freedom. Enter galactic politics and an arranged marriage, and the drama begins to unfold.
The story captivated me enough to finish it but I will admit it is not without faults. It definitely has a bit of a debut author feel to it; too much of the story lines up just perfectly to carry you to the next section, for example. I also wish there was more focus on the political dynamics and opportunities for the main character to truly show herself as a strong protagonist. Some of this was lost too quickly when it could have been developed more.
Trigger Warning - SA intention.
This story was a great read. Initially I was confused by the treatment of the people like that of the Victorian era but is it not on Earth that this story takes place. I love the futuristic equipment and how the strength of one girl changes the course of history. Is her family betrayed and did she do it or was it already meant to be? It was exciting to read about all the falseness and secrets the family was part of to keep their status is society. I loved the love story between Sienna and Burke especially since I was not expecting it.
