My kids adore these books and this one is no exception. Within my classroom, I have a desk fairy door and she visits when I am not there to award students with clean desks. After reading this book to my class, they started to question whether or not they were the same or if they were related. They then wanted to set their own traps. This book causes students to connect things in their daily lives and it gets them thinking. They want to build a trap using their Makerspace materials; this is another STEM connection for my students. Books that cause this in my classroom are gold. They are the ones that you bring out regularly because they get the kids thinking. This is an absolute must in any classroom and I highly recommend this to you!
This is the second “How to Catch a…” books I’ve read and it’s so adorable. First, the illustrations are so vivid and fun - I loved them; they were my favorite part of the book. The story about the newly graduated fairy godmother was sweet and the trouble kids get in trying to catch her made for a cute read. I liked the peekaboo of the fairy and the unicorn cameo at the very end. A fun read for you ones who enjoy troublemaking and have wild imaginations!
I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
Walstead has added another entertaining volume to this series. The Fairy Godmother has just graduated from training and set off to meet "her" kids. When one sees her, they set their first trap to catch her. She realizes what they are doing and plays along. I appreciate the last illustration where they see she sprang one of their traps and left a souvenir for them. Elementary level readers will love the brightly colored pages and the rhythmic text. Looking forward to sharing it with them as a read aloud.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love this book! It’s super cute and fun. A recently graduated fairy godmother is on a mission to help children - but what does she do when they only want to catch her?
This clever fairy godmother is so pretty. I love all the creative drawings and especially the art style. The writing style was cute too! I don’t typically enjoy children’s books that are written in verse, as some authors don’t write a keen rhythm, and getting thrown off of rhythm is annoying to read. I didn’t have any beef with this poetic style of book - it was great, even! I really enjoyed it.
This story was absolutely adorable, captivating me from the first page to the last. I read it to my 5-year-old niece, and she loved it just as much as I did. The artwork is beautiful and brimming with fun, featuring intricate details that enhance the storytelling experience.
The narrative, told from the perspective of a nervous fairy godmother, imparts valuable lessons along the way. I particularly enjoyed the rhyming—it was abundant yet never felt forced.
Overall, this is a delightful read, perfect for children aged 3-7.
Lots of Bright colors in this book like the rest but the traps weren't as elaborate and they sort of caught her. They got a picture which is more than the kids have gotten in any of the other books.
The illustrations are fun and colourful, but I didn't love the story. I think if it was a regular instead of a fairy godmother it would've made a bit more sense.
The How to Catch books are such fun reads. I'm excited to share this one with my new third graders. In this book a fairy godmother wants to find children to guide, but they have other plans. The rhymes are cute and the illustrations really add to the story. Great book.
We are big fans of this series of books.. How to Catch a Fairy Godmother was a great read! It's fun and my almost three year old loved it!
It was fun. I think children will enjoy the illustrations and the crazy adventures that happen within the pages. I don’t think it’s my favorite from this series of “how to catch” but still enjoyable.
I read this with my kindergartner, who helped me put together this review.
His favorite part of the book is when the fairy's magic goes awry (more specifically when she slimes herself).
Overall, the story is charming as are the illustrations. My kindergartner says it's the funniest story he has read lately.
How to Catch a Fairy Godmother by Alice Walstead is cute story following a Fairy Godmother trying to keep out of trouble with kids. Do the kids catch her…. You will have to read to find out her journey on this first mission. Pictures are bright and capture my kiddos eyes with interest.
* Thank you NetGalley, Sourcebooks Kids, and Alice Walstead for an eARC book of How to Catch a Fairy Godmother.
My family loves the "How to Catch" book series. I liked how you can talk about how starting something new can be scary but you can face your fears. Also, the first time can be the scariest but it gets better the more you try to do something. Cute illustrations to go with a cute book!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this arc!!
I read this to my first grade class today, and they loved it! They loved finding the fairy godmother in the pictures and explaining how the children were trying to catch her. They are huge fans of all of these books and the books provide great lessons when we discuss “how to” writing. The pictures were so colorful and detailed.
Thank you Gallery Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
How to catch a fairy godmother is another book the the popular “How to catch a” series. Since they have come out I have enjoyed reading these to my lil one. This one unfortunately did not hit the mark. I found the story not so engaging and lil one didn’t seem to get the story either.
Not the best one yet.
This would be a fun book to use in a fairy tale comparison unit, comparing this fairy godmother to other fairy godmothers in classic tales. I do think that the fact that this was supposed to be a fairy godmother over a normal fairy gets a bit lost though, as there is nothing really showing the difference other than saying that she is there to help guide the kids. Still, a fun story!
If you've read any of the How to Catch series, then you know you're in for a treat before you even open the book. As always, the illustrations are adorable and vibrant, and the the rhyming flows effortlessly. My littlest library patrons love these books, and they're always a hit during storytime hour. I would highly recommend this book - and all other books from this series - to everyone.
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebook Kids for allowing me to review an advanced readers copy! Both my kids and I love the How to Catch series of books. We always have so much fun together while reading them and this one really made us laugh. The illustrations were vibrant. Can’t wait to get our hands on a hard copy!
Adorable, engaging, with beautiful illustrations. Perfect book to accompany my procedural writing unit for my first and second graders. They loved it! Thank you 😊
You can’t go wrong with these books. They’re fun, the illustrations are beautiful, and the rhymes are always well done. For bigger kids they may see the moral, but I do wish it was spelled out a little more for younger kids.
