I could not put this book down! From the very first page, The Inmate had me hooked with its intense plot and intricate characters. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, another twist would come along and force me to rethink everything I thought I knew. Freida McFadden is a master at keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
One of the things I loved most was how the story played with my feelings about the characters—especially Tim. I had such a hard time deciding if I liked him or didn’t, and that uncertainty kept me glued to the pages. The tension between Brooke and Shane, coupled with the sinister atmosphere of the prison, added even more layers of suspense.
And just when I thought the surprises were over, that small twist at the end brought everything together in such a satisfying way. It was the perfect conclusion to a gripping and unpredictable story.
If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page, this is it. Freida McFadden delivers yet another unputdownable masterpiece!
This was a wild ride. Really enjoyed it as I do all of this author's books! Looking forward to her next!
The Inmate" by Freida McFadden is a gripping and chilling psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This read connected mystery, suspense, crime, and thrill from start to finish. The perspective shifts from present to past which was engaging as a reader as things become slowly uncovered.
"The Inmate" kept me guessing til the end and I was enthralled all the way up to the last page!
I wanted a quick, interesting thriller, and this one fit well! It kept me wanting to read the whole time, and i thought the twist was good! I stayed up way too late finishing it, which is a sign of a good thriller!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for allowing me an ARC of The Inmate. Overall, I liked the book and would read it again. I liked the characters and the plot, but felt like I knew what was coming in the story instead of it being a surprise. Overall, I would give it 3/5 stars.
This is the third book written by Freida McFadden and I loved it. Brooke takes up a job at a prison in the town she grew up in but left 10 years ago. Then come the twists, the high school boyfriend, the high school neighbourhood male friend and a son that nobody knew about. While you know there’s going to be twists, there were just enough that it wasn’t predictable. I’ll definitely be reading more of these books.
Thank you to Net Galley and the Publishing Company for this Advanced Readers Copy of The Inmate by Freida McFadden!
For only my second Freida McFadden book, I really enjoyed The Inmate. It was a fast paced thriller that challenged the idea and construct of the guilty vs the innocent. It was well written and had a nice pace and flow to the story.
Another fantastic thriller from Freida McFadden! This one kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole ride. I always look forward to a new Freida McFadden, she has a way of drawing you in and keeping you hooked.

3.5 stars
I was in the mood for a quick, popcorn thriller, and The Inmate delivered exactly what I needed. I was glued to the pages until about 70% in, where I thought I’d figured everything out and started feeling a bit let down—only to be hit with a twist that gave me total whiplash.
Originally, I was leaning toward a 3-star rating, but I’m bumping it up a bit because I genuinely couldn’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the day. Those final twists really stuck with me.
Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC!
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. I enjoyed this book and the twist definitely surprised me!
Kept my attention but wasn't as good as the previous ones I have read by Freida McFadden. Couple good twists. Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC
This was a great fast paced book that drew me in from the very first page. I definitely didn't see that plot twist coming. I
Freida is always going to keep me on the edge of my seat and turning pages, and The Inmate was no exception. Brooke begins her new job as a nurse at a high security prison; you quickly find out someone from her past is an inmate at this prison - and she had a hand in putting them there. To me, this one had a few far-fetched plot lines but I still overall enjoyed it.
I will always love Freida McFadden her books will never cease to amazing me. I was hooked from the start of this book and of course my suspicion started right away about a certain someone 🤫.
I love the constant questions and guessing until all hell breaks loose. This was a book I could not put down and I didn’t want to lol.
You will not regret this book or any other by Freida McFadden ☺️
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
Excellent thriller! Freida McFadden does it again. I did not see the major twist in the story coming. I thought for sure it would be that Tim was the killer. There has never been a book by this author that I didn't like.
Have never been so annoyed with a narrator. Main character works in a prison where her exboyfriend is in jail for murder and attempted murder of her and continues to put herself in unsafe positions. I guessed the twist, worth the read to say you did it, but super frustrating fmc!!
I thought I had this all figured out and I was wrong. Brooke takes a job as the new nurse practitioner at a maximum security prison. She wasn’t sure she would get the job since she knew one of the prisoners inside who is serving a life sentence. However, they are having difficulty filling the position so they were happy to have her. This has so many twists and turns I was shocked by the ending. I am quickly discovering any book by Freida McFadden, is amazing
If you’re into thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat, The Inmate by Freida McFadden is a wild, suspenseful ride you won’t want to miss!
When nurse practitioner Brooke Sullivan begins her new job at a men’s maximum-security prison, she’s given three simple rules: treat inmates with respect, keep personal details private, and never get too friendly. Sounds easy enough, right? But things get complicated fast because one of the inmates is Shane Nelson—a notorious murderer and Brooke’s high school sweetheart. The twist? Brooke’s testimony helped put him behind bars, and Shane hasn’t forgotten.
McFadden does a masterful job of pulling you into Brooke’s anxiety and tension as she confronts her dark past. The confined prison setting adds to the intensity, and the pages fly by as secrets unfold. The Inmate is packed with unexpected turns, and the dynamic between Brooke and Shane keeps you guessing about what she’ll do next.
Perfect for fans of psychological thrillers who love complex, flawed characters and gripping, eerie atmospheres! If you’re ready to dive into a book that makes you question who’s guilty and who’s innocent, this is a must-read.
Brooke is a practice nurse and begins a new job at a man’s maximum security prison. What no one realises is that she has a connection to one of the inmates Shane. Eleven years ago he was convicted of three murders and was sentenced on Brooke’s testament. Brooke is the mother of a young ten year old son and has started to have doubts about her evidence that put Shane away. Shane still proclaims his innocence and asks Brooke to seek out her close friend Tim as he thinks that he knows more than he let on. The story then focuses on the past and present and the events that led to Shane’s conviction. Was Shane guilty, if not who committed the murders? This was a fast paced thriller with an unexpected ending. A highly recommended read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
