What did I just read??
My head is spinning. Frieda McFadden is a MUST READ for me!
She has an amazing way of making think everyone can be “the one”. Brooke was almost killed ten years ago and her accused is in jail. Coincidentally, she gets a job at the prison he is in. That’s when the fun starts. This was a roller coaster of a ride.
Many thanks to the author, Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Quite enjoyed this one although the writing was quite simple. I think Freida is quite good at making you think you've figured something out then throwing a spanner in the works. Although I felt the twist and subsequent scene was too complicated for what it was. The epilogue was great though but not surprising.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the DRC!
Thought I had this one figured out, but in typical Freida McFadden fashion, the ending twists and turns and is wholly (for me, anyway) unexpected. A masterfully crafted thriller, I wasn't able to put this one down.
Brooke Sullivan is a nurse practitioner at a maximum security prison where Shane Nelson, her ex-boyfriend and the baby daddy to her ten-year-old son, Josh is incarcerated for life. Eleven years ago at seventeen, she and her best friend Tim Reese testified that Shane killed their three friends and attempted to strangle her although she never saw who it was. To this day, Shane insisted that he is innocent and to watch out for Tim.
Brooke is now dating Tim! Can she trust Tim? She knew him since they were kids but did he lie? Maybe Shane is telling the truth. Did she help put her son's father in prison? Ughh!!🙄
Not my favorite by this author but I will always read her books. This was plot wasn’t good, main character is stupid and overall I was bored with this one.
I must start by thanking NetGalley, as well as the publisher for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Predictable. Could anyone be this naive repeatably? To make the same wrong choice once must certainly set you up not to make the same mistake again?
Such an awesome thriller! There were so many twists and turns, and it kept my attention the whole time. Definitely pick this one up!
This was My first read by Freida McFadden, an author I see recommended constantly in my book groups, and it didn’t disappoint - it was as intriguing and full of twists as I expected from her books. Twists that I didn’t anticipate which is always great.
The story is about Brooke, a now 20-something who survived a murderous sleepover (3 of her friends ended up dead) when she was in her teens. She pointed the finger at her then-boyfriend and she was instrumental in sending him to prison. She (foolishly- IMO) takes a job as a nurse at the prison where he is incarcerated and starts to question everything.
This book was slow and repetitive throughout part of it and could've been a novella but it was still enjoyable. I find a lot of Freida's female characters to be a bit annoying and very naive, and this book was no exception. Brooke was very quick to judge with little evidence, heavily influenced by every man she spoke to, and didn't trust her own instincts at all. Overall, I'd still recommend this book for what it is; a quick, easy to read thriller with a few good twists.
wow freida never misses!
another amazing gripping thriller from the queen of thrillers! I was on the edge of my seat most of the time and read the book in three days because I needed to know how it ends! I would definitely recommend it to everyone who loves a fast paced page turner! the way the story unfolded was so amazing and there were so many twist and turns! my only little negative thing is that I didn't really like the main character because I couldn't understand her choices most of the time. but still amazing book!!!
I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. Though the main character Brooke could be frustrating with her lack of discernment, the ending was well worth the journey.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of The Inmate in exchange for an honest review.
Well well well! I have been looking forward to reading a Freida McFadden book for awhile. I’ve also been in a bit of a book slump and this definitely helped with that.
I have been going back and forth on a rating and have landed at 3 stars. I had a pretty enjoyable reading experience and flew through this quickly, but found myself getting so frustrated at Brooke and her stupid choices! I do love an unreliable narrator and enjoyed the end of the book. Stars taken off due to plot holes and purposely making Brooke’s character naive.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting a quick and easy read!
Freida McFadden, you did it again. This book freaked me out a little too well. It’s crazy how her writing can make you question EVERYONE.
When I read thriller/mystery books I try my best to be in the moment so I get that shock factor at the end. Although I did have the theory, I was definitely not fully correct. And that epilogue?????? So crazy, I know there had to be a reason for that behavior but I thought I was cause of something else.
I guess it’s true what they say… the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for providing me with an eARC of The Inmate in exchange for my honest review!
Having previously enjoyed Freida McFadden's work through The Locked Door, I was quite interested in diving into another book of hers, and I'm glad to say that it's just the compelling and fast-paced thriller I'd been looking for. It pulls me in right from the start and does an effective job at weaving together the present and past timelines in a way that always keeps me smoothly moving through the narrative. There are a few points in this book where it makes me think I know what will ultimately unfold, but then it successfully introduces a few twists and turns to subvert the majority of my expectations (there's one element I do predict briefly, but then it flies out of my memory bank until the event itself actually happens). Some red herrings are scattered along the path to keep me on my toes, and while the plot does have me questioning its plausibility and focusing on the tropey thriller cliches it's deploying sometimes, they're not major enough to negatively overwhelm my reading experience. No, far from it. And I very much enjoy how the epilogue wraps things up on a grim note.
Overall, I'm officially rating The Inmate 3.75 out of 5 stars, which I'll bump up to a flat four stars on Goodreads. Between this and The Locked Door, I think the latter is more riveting and clever, but this doesn't take away from the absorbing suspense of the former. I'm definitely looking forward to more of McFadden's bibliography.
Frieda McFadden does it again! A riveting thriller that kept me reading. The mix of romance and action kept me engaged- read it in almost one sitting.
I enjoy a thriller. This fit the bill for what I like. Frieda is nothing if not consistent. There just isn't a whole lot to say. 3 stars is a good rating from me. It means I enjoyed it and I would recommend it. It just fell a little short of the love category for me.
Not one of McFaddens best, in my personal opinion...I wanted to smack the MC throughout the whole book...I will admit the twist at the end was pretty good though.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The Inmate is my first Freida McFadden book. I have heard a lot about her books so I was very excited to get the ARC.
Let me start off by saying I definitely enjoyed this book. It was a very fast read that had me guessing with its twists and turns. The only drawback is that it had too many twists and turns. It became very convoluted.
I will definitely read more of her books, as I like a well written story with some twists.
This book is about a woman named Brooke who survived a murderous sleepover (3 of her friends ended up dead) when she was in her teens where she thought her boyfriend tried to strangle her and she was instrumental in sending him to prison, even though she was pregnant with his son. She takes a job as a nurse at the prison where he is incarcerated and starts to question everything.
Freida is notorious for her easy read thrillers that keep you hooked. They are simply written, and usually have a slow build up to a few twists at the end that I never really am able to guess completely, maybe because there isn't ever just one secret revealed. She is the queen at misleading your thoughts. This book was slow and repetitive throughout some of it and honestly maybe could've been a novella but it was still enjoyable. I find a lot of Freida's female characters to be a bit annoying and a lot naive, especially in this book. Brooke was very quick to judge with little evidence, was heavily influenced by every man she spoke to, and didn't trust her own instincts at all. Overall, I'd still recommend this book for what it is; a quick, easy to read thriller with a few good twists.
Freida McFadden has done it again! You know the twists are coming, like being dumped into a maze, and you still can't figure out the full scope of it all before it hits you. Freida's fast paced stories hook you from the start and don't let you go.
