The Inmate is a fascinating thriller that I devoured in less than 12 hours. I could not put this book down!
This book was written incredibly well and I enjoyed the transition between the past and present throughout. I felt it was a bit predictable at times, but the ending really sold this story for me!
Thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
'The Inmate' by Freida McFadden is one of the few thrillers that you will not see all the twists coming!
When I say I couldn't put this one down, I could NOT put it down.
I would find any possible way to continue finishing this book.
This isn't my first McFadden book and it will not be my last. I get absolutely wrapped up in all her books I have read so far and this one was no different.
A few wins for me were the :
- Short chapters
- Great build up
- Thrilling moments (What will happen here)
- Good twists
- Characters I truly enjoyed
5 big ol stars from me!
A twisty, turny, fast-paced thriller about murder and relationships and who to trust when you can't trust anyone at all.
While there may have been a few minor plot holes here and there along the way, this was an overall extremely quick, suspenseful, and enjoyable thriller novel.
This was such an fast paced easy book to read! I could not put it down and it will have you guessing. I enjoy everything that Freida McFadden writes and she is the thriller queen. This wasn't my favorite McFadden book, but I was thoroughly entertained.
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC!
Wow this was such a great thriller with so many twists and turns. I could not put it down, I read 2/3 of the book in one sitting. I've found some of Freida McFadden's previous books a little too over the top seemingly just for shock value, but The Inmate balanced the twists and suspense expertly while still being believable and in line with the story.
4.5 Stars, highly recommend!
Everyone’s told me to read The Housemaid et al. While I’m still on hold for these at the library, I read another of Frieda McFadden’s books. She seems to churn them out at a pretty regular pace, something I like in a thriller author.
The Inmate has alternating timelines, 10 years apart, with heavy clues early on, but a twist so specific that I couldn’t see it coming. Despite the fact the main character, Brooke, is a dodo I enjoyed the fast pace and entertainment value of the story.
Brooke applies to be a nurse at the men’s maximum security prison where her high school ex-boyfriend lives. Not the best idea, especially since he tried to murder her once upon a time.
Or, did he?
That’s what she’s trying to uncover through her memories and unreliable pieces of information from those who knew her back when. Some of the dialogue is silly and immature, leaning toward YA, but I’m down for a wacky plot, not deterred by an unlikable narrator, and always ready to see if I can guess the ending.
Wow. This is not the first of McFadden's books I have read and I am certain it will not be the last. This woman KNOWS how to write a thriller for sure.
I was hooked from the very first chapter. I wanted to know about Brooke's situation and how she had got herself there. Up until about 30% through, I had no clue what was happening. I was confused to the core, and despite having plenty of backstory, I still couldn't pinpoint where the narrative was going to take me. The multiple timelines provided a great insight into the situation and exactly what was happening at the time.
Despite having so much information given to me, I really did not know how it was going to end. I did not know who to trust, who was being honest and I felt myself questioning the connections Brooke had made throughout the novel.
I had my suspicions, and most of them were wrong. That is how I know this was a good thriller. There were elements that I figured out, and others I'd only pieced together in the last 2% of the novel. The plot twists kept on coming, from about 15% in, until the very end, there were gasp out loud moments, and others where I was sat in pure shock, staring at my kindle in awe.
An absolutely gripping, thrilling novel from McFadden again, and one I will recommend for the rest of my life,
Freida McFadden's books are always a trip. Fairly quick reading with lots of twists and turns. The Inmate follows Brooke Sullivan as she returns to her hometown with her ten-year-old son. She get the only job she can working for as a nurse practitioner for the nearby-ish men's penitentiary. Oh, and she has a connection to one of the more notorious inmates, Shane Nelson. Oh, and Brooke was Shane's high school sweetheart who's testimony put Shane in prison for life after he was accused of a series of murders. And we're off!
The novel works on dual time-lines: the present and eleven years ago when Brooke and Shane were in high school right before the incident that lead to Brooke having to testify against Shane. Both timelines support eachother well.
The novel has a ton of secrets and reveals and the ending is one that I NEVER saw coming. True to form for McFadden.
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc. Defintely check this one out!
Amazing!! Once again another book I read all in one sitting. You really know how to play with my emotions. Recommend this book 1000 times over,
A quick read. It had simple plot lines but lots of twists throughout the story. You like all the characters and don’t want any of them to be the murderer. Every time I thought I knew who the murder e was, I was wrong and some of the plot was a little far fetched but I enjoyed it.
Freud McFadden books always ruin my sleep schedule. I was up until well into the early morning trying to finish this book. The twists and turns made me heart race. No one does it quite like McFadden. She has a way of throwing you off her tail and then pulling a fast one on you. This is by far my favorite of her works. I will reccomend this book to anyone willing to listen. The mystery, the suspense, and the thrill is so well written. Absolute master piece.
The thriller of the year!!! You do not want to miss this book!!! A nurse working in a high security prison makes a heart in your throat story.
The main character's in McFadden's books are usually strong and independent.
In this book, the main character was easily persuaded and influenced by other people's actions and opinions. It frustrated me, and the main character made many poor decisions regarding Shane Nelson and her work at the prison. The book got a third star with the twist last chapter (otherwise it would have been 2 stars). It made me want to see more about the character's future and the main character's view of him.
Over the top, good read, love the author. Her books are always twisty and entertaining even if they are over the top sometimes. I liked the premise and their history.
Wow! I love Freida McFadden’s Books so much and this was another highlight, I don’t know how she is able to write something like this but it’s incredible, every time when i thought i knew what was going on i was surprised with another twist.
E o finalzinho do livro, em específico a última frase, me entregou TUDO. Adorei.
Obrigada #NetGalley e #PoisonedPenPress pelo ARC.

Although I found "The Maid" had more interesting plot and characters, I confess that I had a better experience with "The Inmate". Maybe because I really like stories involving prison environments.
Freida has this characteristic of page turner books, and this one was just like that. I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end of the book, and even though many people say that the ending is predictable - which it kind of is - I was unsure who it would be until the moment of the confession itself. And the very end of the book, specifically the last sentence, gave me EVERYTHING. I loved.
Thank you #NetGalley and #PoisonedPenPress for the ARC.
Freida McFadden has been on my TBR since forever! I read such rave reviews about The Housemaid, (even though I have yet to read it) and was excited when I received the arc of The Inmate. Sadly, it was a bummer! It's fast-paced and full of unexpected twists and turns. But a lackluster main protagonist and glaring plot holes stopped me from enjoying this book as much as I had hoped to.
2.5/5
This book was a 3/5 star rating for me. The characters didn’t stick too well for me and the plot was predictable!
I love this book so much! It’s definitely my favorite book by Freida! The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, and the twists were so unexpected!
I did find the main character kind of dumb, but I feel like every main character is in their own way, the story wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t.
Overall, a great read, suspenseful, twisty, and truly unputdownable.
