This definitely isn't my favourite of Frieda's books but overall it was still a pretty good and easy thriller read.
McFadden is AMAZING. I thought I knew how this book was going to end at least 5 different times!!
Suspenseful, thrilling, fast paced....what else could you want in a book?!

A 27-year-old single mother moves back to her hometown after staying away for ten years due to a horrible incident.
Now, she works as a nurse practitioner in a prison, where she secretly knows one of the inmates. It was her only job offer, so there wasn’t much choice.
After being told this prisoner is manipulative, she makes some poor decisions, leading to a world of hurt.
Brooke’s move brings her a new job, a new boyfriend, and an ex with issues. Does she handle any of this the right way, and will the past come back to bite her in the butt?

Well, I read this in one big sweep last night. I started at 12:30 a.m. and finished at 4:30 a.m. because I couldn’t put it down! I tried so hard to figure out who the evil one was and kept flip-flopping between characters as I went along. As with all of Frieda’s books, the ending was a real shock. I didn’t necessarily like this shock, but it was a real hum-dinger.
After finishing, I still don’t know how I feel about the main character. Was everything that happened beyond her scope of understanding, or did she bring some of it on herself? Darned if I know. I can say I would steer clear of her if I came across her.
Psychological thrillers are my favorite genre, and this one snagged me right up. Alternating between the past and the present, it was never stagnant or even slow-moving. After I finished, I lay awake thinking about the story, wondering about a few things and why they happened.
💕Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing this ebook for me to read and review.
A quick, exhilarating page turner with a very surprising ending. Another book I couldn’t put down from McFadden!
I don't really get the Freida hype. Yes, they're fine books and they're quick reads, but it's nothing groundbreaking. With how quickly she's publishing books, it's almost like she's using a ChatGPT formula to help her write.
The book felt a bit whiney and panicky. FMC shouldn't have gotten away with as much as she did.
As a previous single mom, I found this female character, Brooke, particularly frustrating because of her choice in relationships. Frieda McFadden writes interesting and easy to read books and they always have a major plot twist. I struggle to really enjoy them, because I don’t seem to like the main female characters. For me that makes it a struggle to get through the book.
4.25 stars
Ahhh, yes. I tend to really enjoy this writer’s fun, twisty, quick thrillers. This one was tense and suspenseful from the beginning, and although I knew a certain reveal had to be coming from pretty early on (even with a bit of a fake-out), there was still a final twist that I didn’t anticipate. I can always seem to count on this writer when I need a good thriller, and I can’t wait to read her next one!
Definitely not my favorite and boy was Brooke an easy character to become frustrated with. I mean, was she really that oblivious!?
Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Inmate focuses on the life of Brooke-a single mom of a 10 year old boy- who recently moved back to her hometown and got a job at a prison. Turns out, her high school boyfriend who tried to kill her and is the father of her son is a prisoner there and he still claims he’s innocent. The entire time I read it, I thought I knew where the book was going, but in pure Frieda McFadden form, the book kept twisting and I didn’t expect the ending. Still thinking about it and whether or not it’s a little too wild
The Inmate by Freida McFadden
Mind-blowing twists and ,as always, addictive! I LOBE this book loads.
The dual timelines (about a decade ago and present) completed the whole story very well. A decade ago, a group of 5 teenagers spent a night in a house. Not all survived the night. Three were murdered, one was accused for the crime but claimed innocent, one was stabbed and one was luckily stayed intact but with lots of trauma.
In the present, Brooke - who was the lucky one, was offered a nursing job in prison. One of the inmate she had to look after was Shane - who was the one self-claimed innocent. The story then moved to a fast paced one, but still no one to trust. And also with Freida’s unique and typical writing style - you were unable to guess who’s happening next.
Under Freida’s pen, all characters are there for a reason. A surprise after a surprise is also Freida’s strength, especially for the epilogue. At that part, I like Josh and Tim a lot. (Real teammates!)
The betrayal, friendship and motherhood were the backbone of the story setting. Words limited myself to express how much I admire the author and how much I enjoy reading The Inmate.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my copy.

I couldn't put it down. The characters in the book are amazing. So good. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Freida has done it again. Well done!
I was really excited for this book as I have heard a lot about her from TikTok and Instagram. To me, the beginning was a good built-up but it kinda fell flat for me. The last 15% really made me nervous which is what I would expect from a thriller book! Im hoping to find another one of her works that would grip me and make me think about it for a while after.
I would like to thank Netgalley for giving me the earc for an honest review!
Freida Mcfadden is one of my favorite authors and this book didn't disappoint. I was not able to guess the plot twists and the epilogue was creepy. This book was hard to put down. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e copy of this book.
Freida McFadden does it again! I have never met a McFadden book I don't love and and instantly devour. This book kept me guessing up until the very end. And just when I thought it was all wrapped up with a bow, we got another twist in true McFadden fashion. I instantly gravitated towards the protagonist which made the story even more appealing.
This book started out ok. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. Some parts (especially the twist)were a little far fetched but it was a page turner, nonetheless. Freida books are always a quick read. It was just full of too many far fetched things for me to thoroughly enjoy it
Holy cow. This was a wild ride. Freida McFadden does it again with a twisty, fast paced, jaw dropping thriller. The audio was excellent, and I found myself sitting in my car so I could listen to one more chapter. I found portions to feel a little soap opera-y, and some of Brooke’s decisions really bothered me. But the ending literally left me with my jaw on the floor. A solid 4.5 star that I would recommend.
Yet another Frieda McFadden bombshell! This book kept me on my toes through the very end. McFadden has a way with words that has you (unsuccessfully) guessing the whole way through!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
A creepy mystery that goes back and forth in time in the main character's life (Brooke, a nurse practitioner) who was a victim of attempted murder as a teenager. at a scene where three of her friends were killed.
Due to Brooke's testimony, and that of her close friend since childhood, Tim, Brooke's boyfriend, Shane, was found guilty of the multiple murders and the attempted murder of Brooke.
However evidence was slim, but the only other possible guilty party would be Brooke's old friend Tim, which Brooke finds unimaginable.
Brooke returns to her hometown, with her son, when she is left her parent's home in their will. She works at the very prison her old boyfriend (who apparently attempted to kill her) is jailed.
Brooke begins to question the innocence of her present day boyfriend, Tim, who she has known since childhood.
As usual with the books from bestselling author Freida McFadden's novels, you cannot determine the real murderer's identity is hidden until the very last page.
Any fan of psychological and domestic thrillers will a captive audience until the end of the book. I read it in one day, and I bet you will too!
Late to the party on this one, but would first like to thank NetGalley for an ARC of the Inmate by Frieda Mcdadden.
So don’t get me wrong it was really good. 4 stars good, but I feel like the internet overhyped it? I was sucked in to the end for sure, but I never gasped. I didn’t predict the ending so that was a surprise, but it wasn’t anything super crazy. I think it was still a really good read and would recommend it and I’m excited to read more from this author!
Oh boy. I really love Freida McFadden but this book didn’t hit the way her others have. The characters lacked depth and the twist wasn’t all that surprising. The crime that took place also felt pretty anticlimactic since it took forever for us to find out what actually happened and the events that took place weren’t all that exciting.
This book was written well but didn’t hit the mark plot wise. I’ll still read everything McFadden writes, this one just wasn’t for me.
