Brooke was told not to get close to the inmates at her new job as nurse practitioner at a prison but what her new boss doesn’t know is one of the prisoners are there because of her.

This book was so amazing! Just when I thought I knew who the bad guy was a huge twist would happen and it’s change! So crazy! I didn’t know what story to believe or what was the true story! And I loved every second of it!

This book had me hooked from the start. Many parts had me on the edge of my seat just wanting to know what happened in the past. The twists along the way kept me thinking, but the ending I did not see coming.

Frieda never disappoints. This one had so many ups and downs. Brooke is an NP and she gets a job at the prison that her attempted murderer was sentenced to. She’s not ready to see him when he comes to her with a head injury. He continues to declare his innocence. To say their interactions are strained would be an understatement. This book is so tense and exciting! And, as always, FMcF is the queen of twists!-S📖

Thank you @Fmcfaddenauthor, @Netgalley, and @poisonedpenpress for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

This was my first Frieda McFadden book and unfortunately I did not love it as much as everyone else!

I did enjoy the pacing of the book, it's a super fast read and I Always felt like the turning the page and wanting to know where the story was going.

I did like the flashbacks to the night it happened. It felt very 90s horror movie and that was my favorite part of the book.

I liked the relationship between Josh and Tim.

I really really struggled with the female MC Brooke. She was just so so naive! First of all, who would ever take a job at a maximum prison where your ex boyfriend who tried to kill you works.. you could legit work anywhere else since you could sell your house. It was just super weird.

And then to top it off she was so easily manipulated. I just really don't like reading about female main characters with no common sense. It annoys me. She would ignore all the red flags anyone was ever sending ... and not listen to the people closest to her. Just not a trope I'm into.

Unfortunately I guessed the main plot twist pretty early on, some stuff I didn't guess so I appreciated that but also on the other hand the reason I didn't guess them is because they were so absurd.

I can overlook some "reality" in thrillers because that's what makes them interesting. But I like it when they toe the line where it could almost happen... this was so absurd and too many coincidences to make it feel any way believable.

This kept me on the edge of my seat and thoroughly entertained. Another solid thriller from the author. She really doesn’t miss with the bingeable, twisty, popcorn thrillers. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to read more of her novels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I just finished. reading "The Inmate", by Freida McFadden. Thanks to NetGalley and Poisone Pen Press for the advancec copy in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I enjoy Freida McFadden books. They are entertaining and twisty and full of suspense. The twists are always surprising and she uses a lot of red herrings. I have read alot of her books, and this one was no different. And that is not a bad thing. You always prepare yourself to be surprised.
This story is about a girl named Brooke, who helped put her boyfriend behind bars for trying to kill her. She left town abruptly after the trial because she found out she was pregnant, but she returns ten years later (with her sone) to work in the prison where her ex-boyfriend is being help. She also rekindles her friendship with Tim, her childhood friend who has always had a crush on her and was also present when she was attacked by her ex, and survived.
She is torn between believing her ex actually tried to kill her or believing that he is inonocent and someone else did. There are certainly alot of twisty events that lead the reader to believe that Shane (her ex) might actually be innocent. A LOT.
She begins a relationship with Tim and it seems to be going well until something happens. Then the book takes off at bullet speed to the finale where...the unexpected twist happens, and the whole truth is finally revealed.
This book had alot of twists and revelations and red herrings. It was entertaining and fun to speculate what was true and what wasn't. Every character introduced had an important role to play in finding out the truth.
But there was a level of frustration that I felt with Brooks that didn't sit well with me. As. a proffesional and a mother, I expected her to be a better judge of character and not to be so lofty. She had doubts...and then she didn't. Make up your mind girl!
Anyway, I like the book but there was too much disctraction and the ending for me was different from what I imagined. I was told that the epilogue was what made the book unforgettable. I did think it was good...really good. Definately a final twist worth reading.
Happy Reading.

Hoo boy - Freida McFadden! I keep reading these, and I am usually disappointed. This one was ... OK.

We have a FMC who was almost murdered by her high school BF, who has since been incarcerated for the crime, and she helped put him away. He also was found guilty of murdering several other of their friends, all at a sleepover party at his house in a remote area of their town with limited cell coverage during (you guess it) a bad storm. Also attending this party was ... the male love interest who is the guy who was her best friend growing up, and who's always been (not-so) secretly in love with her. Now he's all grown up and a smokeshow, and he's the principal of her kid's school now she's moved back home after her parents' deaths in an accident. Oh yeah - did I forget? The jailbird is the father of the kid as the BF deflowered our MC on the same night that the murders occurred.

Oh - AND - FMC is a nurse practitioner who just got a job working at ... wait for it ... the prison where her babydaddy is serving out his sentence.

Sigh.

If you like your thrillers a bit silly and completely unrealistic, but with a BIG TWIST. this is for you.

If you like good writing, don't waste your time.

McFadden is adequate, and I get it: the books are exciting. But they are also ludicrous. This one tries to be clever in whipping you around this way and that, trying to decide who is the likelier bad guy. The answer is just -- uggh. It's about at "Scream" level in terms of motive. Don't you deserve better? I know I do.

3 stars because it definitely keeps your attention to see what dumb shit the FMC will do next.

I was hooked from start to finish and was pleasantly surprised by all the twists. I really didn’t see it coming that Margie was involved! But I did know that Tim was completely innocent and was so mad at Brooke for not seeing that! He was such a golden retriever boyfriend.. I loved him. Only thing that kept this from 5 stars is that I found Brooke to be so stupid & naive through out the whole book. I kinda wanted her to be out of her misery but the end lol. All in all it was an entertaining book and I’m glad that I read it.

Just finished up listening to The Inmate. I wanted to say this book was predictable, but in true Freida fashion the ending is twisted beyond belief. A little far fetched some might say but that’s why it’s fiction…am I right?

4.5 ⭐
Freida McFadden releases once again a page turner ! I couldn't put this book down (except I had to put it down as I was reading it while on holiday in Italy) , it was gripping from the first chapter.

Brooke is a 27 year old woman that, after her parents pass in a tragic accident, returns to her hometown - a place filled with memories and traumas.

Brooke, desperate to find a job, ends up working in a maximum security prison as a practitioner nurse.
Besides the naturally nerve wracking feeling of working in a prison, there's something else that worries Brooke - she worries about the day she will find someone from her past in prison, someone she once loved, someone who tried to hurt her, someone that she put in prison - Shane Nelson, her ex boyfriend.

As the days go by, Brooke is forced to remember the terrible night that Shane tried to murder her, except that the more she thinks about it, the more she doubts what happened that night. After all, she never saw the face of the man who tried to strangle. Has she put the wrong man in prison?

The chapters alternate between the past and the present and Freida McFadden does it in a way that you get completely obsessed and excited about each timeline.
I must admit, in books that are written in this structure, I usually have one timeline or one character that I'm more excited to read about and I anxiously flick through the pages until I reach said timeline/character. With this book I was equally excited and curious about each timeline and how it was developing.

I finished this book wanting to read all Freida McFadden books, so I guess that's what I'll be doing!

Thank you #NetGalley and #Poisonedpenpress for this book!

I haven't been surprised by a thriller in a long time, this was really good.

I don't remember reading a book with a similar plot to this one, it was unique. It was packed with a lot of plot twists, I kept changing my opinion on who the killer was which I loved lol.

The chapters from the past were my favorite because I thought I could figure out what was going on, but I couldn't. The last chapter shocked me though.

Thank you to Netgalley, Freida McFadden, and Poisoned Pen Press for an advance (well kind of) copy of The Inmate in exchange for an honest review. I believe this is one of maybe 4 or 5 of McFaddens books that are getting a new look and reprinted by PPP. As always, The Inmate grips the reader right off the bat and doesnt let you go until your head stops spinning from the final twist. This story alternates between the present day and 10 years ago as we see Brooke trying to navigate her past with one of the inmates, Shane. Brooke is thrown for loop after loop as she tries to figure out if she testified against the wrong person. Youll be blown away by the ending. This one is out now and you need it on your bookshelf (I just bought my copy to add to my Frieda collection)!!

Woah!!!! I honestly could not put this book down and stayed up way too late to read The Inmate!
I really enjoyed Frieda's use of one chapter in the here and now and one in the past, it was like two stories being told at the same time from the same narrator. It was not at all confusing and one of the things that definitely kept me hooked! A couple of times throughout the book I thought I had worked out who the killer was, but I was only partially right and would never have guessed the motive. And just when you are getting to the end of the book and thinking ok, its all sorted I know exactly what happened and why there is one final twist and turn that will leave you going What The Actual..... !?!?!
This book has definitely left me wondering if certain things do run in families....
I enjoyed this book so much I have purchased one for my book shelf!

What a ride! I could not put this book down. Every time I thought I'd figured out the truth, bam, a new twist. 100% would recommend!

If you're in the mood for a murder mystery that feels like it's straight out of a suspenseful TV movie, then Freida McFadden's "The Inmate" might just be the book to curl up with. Think of it as the book version of that predictable yet entertaining Lifetime Network movie.

McFadden sets up a story with two clear paths, and you know the book will go one way or the other. But here's the kicker: just when you start to think, "I've got this figured out," McFadden throws in a curveball. This twist towards the end is what nudged my rating from 2.5 to a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

"The Inmate" is a fairly standard murder mystery with a unforeseen twist. It's not groundbreaking, but it does its job of keeping you entertained. For anyone looking for a reliable read with a touch of suspense, this book is a pretty good bet.

Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for my copy of The Inmate. 3.5 stars rounded down. This was an easy and fast-paced read that left a bit to be desired. The twists were good because I didn’t see them coming, but one was also a bit unrealistic. The main character, Brooke, was quite annoying and completely naive. Her naivety and terrible decisions took away from the story for me. Overall though, this was an enjoyable, page-turning thriller.

Honestly this was the most meh McFadden book I've read. I really wasn't into this and the ending didn't phase me at all in the way her others have. I wish I liked this more than I did because the concept was fascinating.

Freida McFadden's "The Inmate" is a chilling psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page. The main character, Brooke, is this seemingly normal nurse practitioner who lands a job at a creepy maximum-security prison. Big mistake, because guess who's one of the inmates? Yep, her high school boyfriend, Shane, the one who got accused of murder (thanks to her testimony, no less). McFadden does this amazing thing where she flips between the past and present, showing what happened back in high school and the messed-up situation Brooke's in now. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion – you know it's gonna be bad, but you can't look away. Brooke starts questioning EVERYTHING. Was Shane really guilty? Did she remember things wrong? Is he messing with her head from behind bars? If you're looking for a psychological thriller that will stay with you long after you finish it, grab "The Inmate."
