Freida did what Freida does!
A quick, entertaining thriller that keeps you guessing. I was back and forth the whole book trying to figure out the truth. The reveal wasn't quite the shock I was hoping for, but I absolutely loved the final page and how she wrapped it up. The final line was gold!
A solid 4/5 stars and I absolutely recommend!
3.5* McFadden’s stories always deliver with easy-to-read, fast-paced plots. This was no exception. It will keep you guessing and is twisty, but not as unexpected an ending as she usually delivers. Still a good read and will continue to pick up all of McFadden’s future books.
After not caring for the Coworker or The Teacher, I was reluctant to tuck into another Freida McFadden book so soon. However, after receiving this ARC, I figured I'd give her another shot, as I have loved some of her previous books.
In true Freida McFadden fashion, The Inmate, is an fast and thrilling read. I thought I had the book figured out fairly early on, and some parts of it I did. However, there was a twist at the end that I never could have anticipated, and truly enjoyed.
I would definitely recommend The Inmate to those looking to get back into the thriller genre, reading in general, or out of a slump!
4/5
I am a huge Freida McFadden fan and was so excited to see the email inviting me to read The Inmate. I flew through it because all of her books are easy, fun reads but it's not my favorite by her.
Love love love The Inmate!! Read it I. Two days because it kept me engaged from cover to cover. When I thought I had it all figured out, a twist came out of nowhere To make me second guess everything I thought I knew.
I truly enjoyed this author and her writing.. I was brought in and wanted to know what Brooke was going to do about her son father and her best friend she has not seen in 10 years. The characters were intriguing and made me want to see what happened next to them.
Wow!! This book sucked me in from the very beginning & kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Every time I thought I knew what was going on, I was wrong!!! Freida always delivers with the jaw dropping twists & this was no exception!
Brooke Sullivan has taken a job as a nurse at a men's maximum security prison. But no one but her knows her connection to one of the prisoners in there - Shane Nelson - Brooke's high school boyfriend. A boyfriend who also tried to kill her, and her testimony put him into this prison for life.

3.5 stars rounded up - I did completely fly through this book, it's definitely an easy read.
There were a couple of plot issues that stuck out to me though, like Tim not recognising the nanny, the motive for the murders seemed weak, and how easy it was to get Shane out of prison with a life sentence.
Brooke was extremely naive with her feelings toward Shane, however it did show how well he manipulated people - I was constantly torn between believing him, to wondering if what he was saying was an act. It was a little strange though with Brooke being traumatised from that night 10 years ago, to being happily in a room with him.
I also really enjoyed the present and past chapters, as the present played out - we see what actually happened 10 years ago on the night where Brooke was almost murdered.
Those last pages with the big twist... I did not expect at all! Definitely had my jaw dropping.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for this copy. This review is voluntary.
This was a page turner! I stayed up way too late and woke up way too early to finish this book. I loved it! That epilogue! I had a gut feeling that’s what happened. Freida writes the most amazing books they keep me guessing & on the edge of my seat. Wow, just wow! One of my favorites by her for sure.
Thank you, NetGalley & Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read & review this book.
Another excellent book by Freida McFadden!
Brooke Sullivan, a twenty-eight-year-old, is in dire need of employment. However, the only job she can secure is as a nurse practitioner at Raker Maximum Security Penitentiary—the least desirable job she could imagine. Unfortunately, she has no other options.
It is not that she fears the inmates; rather, she is concerned about encountering her first boyfriend and the father of her ten-year-old son, Josh, Shane Nelson, who is incarcerated there. He is serving a life sentence and she is the reason for his imprisonment. The events of that fateful night continue to haunt her. How would she react if they came face to face?
Having recently returned to her childhood home, which she inherited from her parents, she is attempting to establish a new life for herself and Josh. She is also delighted to reconnect with her childhood best friend, Tim Reese, who was present on the night that nearly cost her her life.
No one is aware that Shane is Josh's father, and she intends to keep it that way.
However, are things as straightforward as they appear? Shane maintains his innocence. Did she make a mistake?
Who can be trusted?
I finished this book in one sitting.
The pace was fast, and the ending was mind-blowingly good featuring multiple unexpected twists.
The only constructive criticism I have is that I found the protagonist to be slightly gullible and overly trusting.
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Penn Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
WoW.........The Inmate by Freida McFadden was a superb book from start to finish. Once I opened my kindle and started to read this brilliant book I was glued to my chair.
Eleven years ago. Shane and Brooke were high school sweethearts.........Shane was a promising star quarterback, and they are so in Lope. Shane's mother was away for the weekend Shane organised for his close friends and especially to get closer to Brook.
Three teenagers at a house party were brutally murdered.
Shane, is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders.
His girlfriend Brooke's testimony put him there!
Years go by, Brook has moved away from her home town.
Her parents are killed in an accident and she is returning to her family home along with her 10 year old son Josh.
Brook applied for various nursing positions and was turned down, at every turn. She has to work and support her and her son. The only job that was out there, was a position at a Maximum security prison. This just happens to be the same Maximum security prison that her ex-boyfriend Shane is in. But, what was the chance she would bump into him after all these years? and would he recognise her?
So, she then applies for a nurse practitioner job and she gets it...............
But, there are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow:-
1) Treat all prisoners with respect.
2) Never reveal any personal information.
3) Never "EVER" become too friendly with the inmates.
None of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken all the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates.
Shane will never forget Brook and will never forgive her for putting him here.
WoW.........I could not turn the pages to my kindle quick enough to find out what happens next....Another excellent book by now my favourite author.........
Freida McFadden is one of my favorite authors. Her writing style lends itself to a twisty, turvy journey that you truly never can guess what the ending will look like until you arrive and it leaves you breathless. The Inmate is no different! This is by far my favorite book from Freida McFadden. I could not put this book down until it was over and even then, I just kept thinking about it! Nothing is ever as it seems! Thank you to Freida, Poised Pen Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this advanced reader copy!
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for a copy of this book. Overall this book was easy to read. The pace of the story moved fast which helped the mystery unfold. I do enjoy reading Freida McFadden books and although this one wasn't my favorite it still left me with my jaw dropping when parts of the mystery puzzle were revealed while also enjoying a bit of romance.
Thank you to Freida McFadden, Poisoned Pen Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review an advanced copy of The Inmate!
Unfortunately, I did not get to read this one before it was re-released. Fortunately, I did not get to read this one before it was re-released.
All I can say is... WOW. It was so worth the wait. This one has been on my TBR for a while and I never got around to reading due to life happening. I was so beyond thrilled to read and review this one.
Like any good Freida McFadden reader, I decided to approach this book as a detective. With my imaginary fedora and cigar, I wrote detailed notes about my thoughts and predictions about the nature of the book. Every. single. one. was. WRONG.
I feel like I have whiplash after reading this book, in the best way possible. I think that is what makes a Freida McFadden book.
As an avid reader of psychological thrillers, I feel that I can make a solid prediction on the twists and shock-value ending about halfway through... The Inmate chewed me up and spit me back out about 5 times!!!
I'm slowly but surely making my way through the McFadden Files (sounds so cool), but, I have to say that this could be her best one yet.
This is a book worthy of 5 stars and public hype.
This started off really strong and I was hooked right away. It started to become a bit cheesy and predictable after a while. Frieda’s books are always quick, and enjoyable reads. This one wasn’t my favorite of hers but still a good read.

Brooke takes on her new role as a nurse practitioner at a local prison, despite her teenage boyfriend being incarcerated there for murder.
This was enjoyable, as all of McFadden's works, even if it stretched the plausibility by yards.
A quick, thrilling read I've come to expect from McFadden.
Ok I'm not the biggest fan of Freida McFadden books, but they are easy and interesting reads. They tend to not be very deep or complicated, which is good when you're looking for a quick read.
The inmate was interesting, I felt like I've read a few books with a similar plot, but it was still good.
I will say I did enjoy the twist (I mean you saw it coming but enjoyable none the less).
She does however have a knack for the "epilogue twist" - the teacher had a good one and this one did as well.
Freida never disappoints!! This book was so good from start to finish! It was full of twists and turns that kept me wanting to read more! Some of the twists I never saw coming!!
This is my 1st Freida M. book!
I've been looking forward to it and it didn't disappoint!
I don't want to give anything away as we are constantly questioning who committed the crime. So many twists and turns and as I thought there were lots of big twists towards and at the end. Don't judge a book by its cover is the main lesson here I believe the author is teaching us here with this plot, really liked the plot.
I did find Brooke, the main character was a bit too trusting at times but overall was a great book. I really liked Freidas' writing style, it was so easy to picture it like a film in my head. Switching from present to past regularly was very effective and kept the pace and plot divulging deeper and deeper.
I will definitely be reading more of her many books asap!
The twist got me! And it was a really quick read. I never found myself wanting to stop reading.
However, the writing felt a little young for me. There was a lot repeated and it made the book feel redundant at times.
