Wow! It’s not often that an end-of-book twist surprises me, but Frieda McFadden never disappoints! This book is now one of my favorites. I read it cover to cover in one sitting!!!
I gave this a good chance, but when your thriller/mystery relies on the main character being fucking STUPID, the reader suspending disbelief, and a ton of conveniences, your thriller/mystery is not for me.
I see a lot of people calling this a popcorn thriller, as in, it's just entertaining, but I disagree. I don't have a good time when the main character is as stupid as Brooke and doesn't have much depth and when the plot is too weak to make me care about anything. Also, this sounded so juvenile even during the present-day chapters. It was so odd!
I got to 39% before I decided to drop this and then I went online and read about what happened after that point. I would've been annoyed to have wasted more time on this book based on that payoff.
I admit that the epilogue twist is a good one if not original, but a good twist does not a good thriller/mystery make. At least not in my opinion. I doubt I'll give this author another chance, tbh, I just didn't vibe with this at all.
This was good and a bit twisty. The ending was just creepy though with how much Josh might really be like his dad.
Absolutely loved the Inmate!
Such a thrill and definitely threw me off to the last page! The author did such an amazing job at continuing the story plot and keeping the surprises going till the last page. There were lots of twists that were unexpected and that’s not surprising with any of Freida McFadden’s books! I highly recommend this book as she does everything she can as the mother of her son and with her son’s father in prison but there’s only so much she can do.
This was entertaining, though not my favorite by the author. The end felt too ridiculous, but overall, an engaging read,
I ended up reading 13 Freida McFadden books in a row thanks to the introduction through Netgalley! Highly recommend and have already purchased several physical and digital copies for library collections.

Thank you Netgalley for the e-ARC.
I had a blast reading this story about the night where brooke almost got killed, but the question is who did it?
This story was kind of insane, brooke was a little naive. But I had a really good time reading it. It was easy to read so that was very nice.
The twist at the ending was not super shocking. Although, the epilogue from Josh's POV was! It was the perfect ending
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read this book.
Having previously read some of Freida McFadden's books I know how well she incorporates twists and turns into the story. And I was not disappointed by this book, I stayed up way later than usual because I just had to keep reading!
I didn't pick part of the major twist which is always good because I think it makes the story more interesting and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and engaged in the book.
Loved it!! Frieda McFadden is the queen of thrillers! I listened to the audio book version of this book and couldn’t stop! Just when I thought I’d figured out who did it there was a new twist! Highly recommend! 5 stars!
Reading Freida's books never disappoints!! Freida has this magic woven in her words which sends chills down your spine every time when you least expect it! Thankyou to Netgalley, the publisher and Freida for this wonderful Arc!!
I was so excited to receive this as an ARC -- I really enjoy the simplicity of McFadden's prior works, and how they jump right into the action. However, after getting about 5% through, I realized that it sounded extremely familiar. I went to add it to my Goodreads, and found that I actually had already read this book in July of last year! When I originally read this book (and then apparently forgot everything about it), by Goodreads review was, "freida rly knows how to serve up those twists and turns 👏🏼."
Now, don't take its forgettable plot, characters, and story as a signal that I did not enjoy this book -- I most certainly had a fun time reading it. While it may not be a literary masterpiece, it had all of the hallmarks of what I had first enjoyed in Freida McFadden thrillers: a female main character who is dubious enough for us to want to know more about her, but not quite smart enough to avoid all danger; male villains who we want to trust but know we shouldn't, and plot twists that will make your mom gasp out loud in her book club meeting.
Overall, this falls right in the middle of what I expect from McFadden. It's not her best, not her worst, and you're getting exactly what you bargain for when you reach for one of her many thrillers. I recommend this as a summer beach read, and look forward to her next release!

"The Inmate" by Freida McFadden is a gripping and twisty thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. McFadden's storytelling prowess shines through in this propulsive and mind-bending narrative, weaving a tale of secrets, deception, and betrayal that had me guessing until the very end.
Brooke Sullivan's journey as a nurse practitioner in a maximum-security prison is fraught with danger and intrigue, especially when her past comes back to haunt her in the form of Shane Nelson, a notorious inmate with whom she shares a complicated history. The tension between Brooke and Shane crackles with intensity, and McFadden expertly ratchets up the suspense with each twist and turn.
What I loved most about "The Inmate" was its exploration of guilt and redemption, as well as the complex dynamics between the characters. McFadden deftly delves into the murky depths of human nature, leaving readers questioning their own perceptions of right and wrong.
This book truly kept me up at night, unable to put it down as I raced to uncover the truth behind Shane's past and Brooke's connection to him. With its breakneck pacing, shocking revelations, and unforgettable characters, "The Inmate" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers.
Freida McFadden has delivered a five-star masterpiece that will leave readers breathless and eagerly awaiting her next twist-filled tale.
This is the year of Freida McFadden.Boy oh boy, she knows to make you glued to your seat.
This book is an absolute treat. You just keep guessing, what had happened actually?
As much as I loved the story, our female protagonist failed to impress me.
I am going to be honest and say i almost planned to stop reading halfway through, lol. I would suggest everyone try to read this blindly, but if you are struggling to get through like i was, trust me, it gets better. I almost didn't understand the hype, but for real, freida mcfadden deserves it.
MIGHT BE SPOILERY
I almost gave up because i felt the mystery in front of me was so obvious, and i honestly thought the main character, brooke, was so naive for not noticing. But i swear, its not what you think. I will not say more because i dont like spoilerreviews lolol.
I was so surprised though, and this book is awesome, go read it now <3
Thank you to netgalley and the author for sending me the book in exchange for an honest review
The Inmate was a good popcorn thriller in typical Freida fashion. Her books are always good palate cleansers and always suspenseful. They are great to keep you hooked and on the edge of your seat. Although, this one was not my favorite it was still a fun ride. Many twists and turns in the end.
The Inmate by Freida McFadden is another twisted psychological thriller. I thought I had the ending figured out, but I was completely wrong! Brooke Sullivan moves back home with her son and works at a maximum security prison where her son's father, Shane, is incarcerated. It was her testimony that put him there, and he doesn't even know that he has a son. Will Brooke manage to avoid running into Shane? Will he learn her secret? Read to find out.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced reader copy of this book!
I thought I knew how this story was going to end at about 70% through and then Freida worked her magic YET AGAIN. The story ended and then I read the epilogue for YET ANOTHER TWIST. I absolutely loved reading this book and how great of a storyteller Freida is. I always recommend her books and will definitely be recommending this one.

This is my first book by this author but I will definitely check out her other books. The book was a wild ride with plenty of twists and I found myself changing opinions several times about who did what. That's what I'm looking for in a thriller - I want to be surprised.
"There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men's maximum-security 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates." Brooke quickly breaks all of these rules since one of the most dangerous and notorious inmates is her ex-boyfriend, Shane. He's in prison for committing some grisly murders, and Brooke's testimony is the one that put him there.
It was hard to like Brooke. She was unnaturally clueless and naive, which frustrated me to no end. I'm not sure if the author meant for her to be that way or not, but I often found myself rolling my eyes and telling her to not be so stupid. Sadly, she never seemed to learn from her mistakes until the very end. The book is twisty and even though I knew that Shane was a psychopath, whether or not he was guilty, I can see how people succumbed to his charms. When I worked as an adult Probation and Parole Officer way back when, I supervised several people like that. They always gave me chills...
The ending was a wild rush - and don't even get my started on the epilogue. What?!
I received a complimentary ebook from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press. All opinions are my own.
One would think when you have read so many Freida McFadden books that one would be able to figure out the "who done it", but one would be wrong.
This author writes her stories with so many twists and turns that by the end of the book you have no idea what is going one and who you thought did it was totally wrong. I thought i had this book figured out and was totally shocked at the end when i was wrong.
Read this book you will not be disappointed
I always love how quick Freida’s books are. This was no exception. I flew through it. I just wanted to find out who tried to kill her. Definitely only had one twist I wasn’t expecting but the rest wasn’t a shock. I still really enjoyed this one and recommend!
