Barker Mifflin is an 11yo survivalist, prepared for anything from monsters in friends' armpits (see a previous book) to giant chickens. When his team leader at his summer strawberry-picking job confides in him about secret experiments on the farm, he will need to put all his doomsday prepping survival skills into action to save the day!
This book was bonkers. From the cover I expected this to be a comic or graphic novel - it is not. Told in fourth-wall breaking first person, from the POV of 11yo Barker, this book is a rollicking adventure where things just get weirder and weirder.
There are absurdities upon absurdities, mad scientists oddly proportioned animals, and plenty of references back to the first book in the series (with a handy spoiler guide for those who haven't read that one).
A weird read for early middle-grade readers
~Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
A hilarious quirky cast of characters with a great story plot. Barker Muffin is a hoot! Whether old or young this is an enjoyable read. My 9 year grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks#Netgalley and #BlackstonePublishing for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are mine.
This is definitely on me, but I requested this review copy thinking that this was a graphic novel - I mean, the cover really makes it seem that way - and when it turned out to be a regular book I was immediately a bit disappointed.
I also found the writing style somewhat cringey, so overall I personally wouldn’t read another book in this series.
