I would basically read anything Karin Slaughter writes - she is an autobuy author for me and I have never found her books anything other than gripping. This Is Why We Lied is no exception. I’m a huge fan of the Will Trent / Sara Linton series and this latest instalment is as brutal, compelling and addictive as I’ve come to expect. I can’t pinpoint quite how she does it but Slaughter just has this way of grabbing her readers attention and not letting up until the very end of the book. I was totally hooked from the first page of This Is Why We Lied, which is something of a locked room mystery, concerning a family so twisted that my mind was reeling with shock. There are brilliant twists and turns, red herrings and characters that you will either hate or become completely invested in. Another unquestionably five star read for me from the Queen of thrillers. Highly recommended.

A locked room mystery with Karin Slaughter's writing style is the best combination for an unputdownable thriller. Having read 3-4 Slaughter's books previously, I'll say that the pace in this book is a little relaxed, especially in the first half of the book, which is understandable because the mystery is mixed up with Will and Sara's romantic vacation. Amanda and Faith make their appearances only in the latter half of the book.

Will and Sara are married and they are honeymooning in a remote lodge, owned by the McAlpine family. The lodge is set amidst beautiful mountains and is spread over several acres of land. As Sara succinctly puts it, in such a place, you scratch under the surface a bit and all sorts of secrets start to tumble out of from dark places.

And that's exactly what happens when the lodge's manager, Mercy McAlpine, gets viciously murdered and Will and Sara are the first to come across the victim's body. Most of the guests and all the family members have secrets to hide and they lie to protect themselves. I'll just say that this one is too twisted and sinister. The book deals with toxic families and abuse and turns even darker towards the end. I did find the twists in the end to be placed too close to each other, so much that it seemed a little implausible. Overall I enjoyed reading the book and wanted to read it faster to find how it ends.

Slaughter's writing, as always, is witty(the part where she mentions that series on Hulu about a detective with a dog-totally wicked) and very addictive. I have made up my mind to read all the books in the Trent and Grant County series, even if it takes me a million years to do so. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advance copy of the book.

I really enjoyed this book.
I haven't read many by this author and I knew this was number 12 in the series, but it didn't matter, and once I pieced some personal stories of Will together, the rest didn't matter.
Could be read as a standalone.
It kept me guessing and kept my interest.

A fantastic read that kept me guessing!
Will and Sara are on their honeymoon in an off the beaten track mountain hideaway .
Unfortunately McAlpine Lodge isn’t the secluded peaceful destination that Will and Sara envisage .
The McAlpine family are toxic and certainly dysfunctional.
Mercy the daughter of the family works hard to keep the lodge running and making the business viable but she’s had enough and threatens to bring the family down , and then she’s found brutally stabbed .
Will and Sara ‘s honeymoon is brought to an abrupt end before it’s even begun as they begin to try and unravel the mystery of the murder and all the secrets that the McAlpine family are hiding .
Another great Will Trent and Sara Linton story , Karin Slaughter’s writing style just keeps the pages turning late in to the night.
A must read for all Will Trent fans , you won’t be disappointed!

Wow the queen of thrillers Karin Slaughter has done it again!! Take a bow!!

The 12th book in the Will Trent series which can be read as a stand-alone as the authors does a great job of giving you some details about Will’s childhood! Which was great to learn more about and also the other children he was housed with also.

I really enjoyed getting to see the married life side to Will and Sara and how well they work as partners and a couple. Will’s love for Sara definitely stood out for me!

Like true Slaughter fashion there are some dark themes through the book, dealing with childhood abuse, trauma, rape, drug abuse and incest with a dark twist.

The reverse plot, starting with the murder then flashback to build up to the current point and beyond was just fantastically done. Honestly, I need to read more of this style it is super engaging and you can’t help but want to know more.

I truly felt deeply sorry for Mercy, she went through so much in her life and her family failed her so much!! If anyone deserved a break that girl did!!

The characters are relatable and likeable, the story line keeps you hooked and always has twists and turns you did not expect. I would recommend anyone to read this. You won’t regret it, your bank balance might as you will want to read all her series

I’ve read previous books about Will Trent and Sara Linton. I really wanted to like this latest book by Karin Slaughter but I really didn’t. I did read it completely to the end but was relieved when I’d finished. I felt it was too drawn out and I didn’t gel with characters other than Will and Sara.

A real twister of a book.
Things seem straightforward but there are so many secrets and lies on this mountain lodge retreat that the only people you can really trust are Will and Sara.
Hampered by the isolation, the weather and the reluctance of the family and guests this murder proves complex to solve but keeps the reader fully engaged throughout.

Masterfully written as usual by Slaughter. Will and Sara are on their honeymoon and obviously next comes a murder.

The sheer light and dark in this series, reflected beautifully in tragedy happening and the love that Will and Sara have make this an absolute must read, like the rest of the series.

Read this if you love dark thrillers with a very capable investigative duo.

Will Trent is a GBI Investigator and his wife Sara is a medical examiner. They are on their honeymoon and Will has booked them into McAlpine Lodge which is in the mountains. The only way into the lodge for guests is to hike there and there is no WIFI for guests. Will and Sara are keen to make the most of all the outdoor activities.

The lodge is managed by Mercy McAlpine and the whole family are involved in the business - what is clear is that they are a very dysfunctional family with many secrets. Will and Sara hear awful screams on their first evening and Will finds Mercy close to death, having been stabbed many times.

Mercy dies and immediately Will gets to work trying to preserve the crime scene and find the murderer. As Will and Sara do their best to contain the situation, the local sheriff arrives to take over the investigation but doesn’t inspire them with confidence.

Everyone in the family and all of the guests are suspects and they are all clearly hiding something and some are clearly lying.

This book was so good, there are so many twists and turns and revelations. So many secrets are uncovered and I just couldn’t work out who the killer was. A great read.

Book 12 in the Will Trent series opens with the Honeymoon of Will and his new bride, medical examiner Sara Linton at the secluded McAlpine Lodge. Only this pair can find themselves in the midst of a murder scene with a closed cast of familial suspects. Mercy McAlpine is brutally killed, after years of abusive relationships with those around her. Each of her relatives holds a secret and Will and Sara find themselves in the perilous situation of being detached from the world and mingling with those with murderous intentions. The story takes us back to events pre murder and then unravels Mercy's last moments and connections with each of those present at the lodge, peeling back the layers of truths until the final twists. An entertaining and tantalising thriller. #thisiswhywelied #karinslaughter #netgalley

What do you get when you mash a brilliantly atmospheric crime procedural with the vintage feel of a locked room murder?  Almost perfection!!!

Will and Sara are on their honeymoon and still they manage to find a murder to solve. McAlpine Lodge is remote and beautiful but it hides a lot of secrets, the newest more shocking than the last.  The story is told by slipping backwards in time occasionally to see parts of the story unfold as they are discovered in the current timeline.  It really made for an interesting story.

Mercy, our victim, comes from the most toxic family I've ever had the misfortune to read about.  I really wanted a shower after parts of the story were revealed.  She isn't the most sympathetic of victims and you really have to work sometimes to feel sorry she is gone!

There are some almighty twists and just when you think the murder is solved, there is one more twist to make you gasp.

Faith and Amanda all make an appearance to help solve the murder and I love this little family that Will has built for himself.

I had such high hopes for this book after reading the first chapter. I was on the edge of my seat to find out whodunnit!

I haven’t read any other books by this author, especially any from the rest of this series, so I didn’t really know what to expect.

I loved all the characters and found their back stories to be really interesting. However, I think the vast amount of information offered about each character was saturating the story for me and I eventually had to admit defeat at 27% and skip to the end.

I think the premise of the story is great, I just couldn’t deal with each chapter being about 20-something pages long and I felt I was losing traction amongst all the back-story.

I wish this book every success and I’m sure those who love the others in this series will enjoy it.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.

As well as being an exciting read I found this book very sad. Mercy had a really hard life with parents who had no interest in her, an ex who bullied and beat her and a son who she barely knew. If only she had realised that the only person who would fight her corner was Aunt Delilah.
The beginning of this story set the pace for the book and it never let up. Will and Sarah faced a hostile crowd of suspects because they had not been honest about their jobs when they arrived but as everyone else is also lying their work is even more difficult than usual. All in all it was a gripping read with an unbelievable twist at the end.

This is book 12 in the Will Trent book series. Karin Slaughter knows how to write a well developed twisty thriller that never lets up and keeps firing the surprises at you that your head is in a complete spin. Omg the McAlpines are a family full of many a dark secret with most members being truly detestable. Will Trent, Sara Linton, Faith and Amanda are as loveable as always and it’s just like coming home to old friends. There is a lot going on within this storyline so you need to keep your wits about you and your detective skills need to be on point. I honestly couldn’t stop listening and even though it’s a lengthy listen it didn’t feel like that. It’s a fast pace listen and the narration was very engaging. Add it to your TBR pile.

4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨ domestic violence
✨ everyone is a suspect
✨detective work

✨ the story was focused on the secluded cabin and they found someone got murdered . The cabin owners daughter. She suffered a lot from being abused, rape and murder. There some trigger points here so be aware .
Everyone who’s on that retreat is the suspect. The back and forth of investigation which is quite thrilling.
I got to be honest this story was a missed for me.

✨ firstly, yes there’s is a lot of suspects . Who is it gonna be? But I get so confused with the mixed of characters and not clear .
It should’ve been a good read but it was so draggy and long.

The first half of this book is incredibly slow. The second half is faster paced, but the whole book is summed up in the final chapter - had I realised this partway through, I would have skipped to that section and saved several hours of my life. The book is full of incestuous and abusive relationships and has no likeable characters. 2 stars for the final chapter.

Once again Karin Slaughter has hit the target with this book!
Sara and Will go on their honeymoon but whilst there a body is discovered.
This book is fast paced and a great read. I highly recommend it

This is my first book in the Will and Sara series. The couple have just married and I gather it has been a long time coming, but when the owner of the resort they are honeymooning in is murdered, they are soon involved in the investigation.

Nobody seems particularly shocked when Mercy is found dead and everyone theoretically has a motive, so there are lots of twists and turns and some throughly unlikeable characters who I could well have believed were guilty, and some horrifying family history that was revealed throughout.

I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters, which made it difficult to care about what happened to them and the story was a bit too much of a slow burn for me, but there was a good and unexpected reveal at the end and I would definitely like to catch up with some earlier books in this series.

3 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Karin Slaughter and Harper Collins for an ARC in return for an honest review.

I did not realise first of all that this is a series but as I like Karin Slaughter ‘s writing I decided to give it a go and I was not disappointed. I did not feel that I missed out reading this out of sequence but I do so need to read them in order now. Will and Sara are on their honeymoon and there is a murder. Will particularly cannot let that go and so between the two of them they decide to investigate but need help from their Atlanta team. Honeymoon now put on hold. While waiting for the team a storm comes in and makes the journey virtually impossible but eventually they arrive and the investigation begins. . The person who was murdered is the resort manager Mercy McAlpine. The visitors at the resort have seen arguments between the family especially as her father planned to sell the resort which Mercy was totally against. Mercy is married to Dave who is a violent man and abuses Mercy. Her father is also violent although now confined to a wheelchair. Her mother has never been a true mother to Mercy or her brother but seems to take over the responsibility for Jon and is also favouring Dave which causes friction. As the investigation continues there are several possible murderers and then someone else dies which puts their possibilities into a quandary. The book continues at a fast pace and it was a great read. The ending was not as expected although towards the end I did wonder.
