As much as I loved this series I have to say this last book felt rushed. I’m a bit disappointed in it to be honest.

I will always love Ivan as I grew up with him as a child.
I was always so sad to see him caged up by himself.

He was a beautiful silverback and just an amazing site to see.

Of course this was perfect. A lovely conclusion to a lovely series. Thank you for these characters and for educating children about animals.

The One and Only Family is the fourth and final book in the The One and Only Ivan series. Ivan has found love with his habitat-mate, Kinyani. When he learns that he is going to be a father, he is both excited and apprehensive. The joy in this book is viewing parenthood through the eyes and voices of the gorillas. Be sure to read the gorilla glossary beforehand, so you will be familiar with terms such as pop drop and lazy legs.

This sweet story nicely wraps up the series.
The One and Only Family is not as engaging as the previous three books, but still is very enjoyable.

The One and Only Family by Katherine Applegate is the fitting finale to the story of Ivan the Silverback Gorilla, Ruby the elephant and Bob the dog. Now living in the wildlife sanctuary Ivan finds himself father to twins. While raising two rambunctious babies without the help of a tribe, Ivan and Kinyani, with the help from the sanctuary staff, do the best they can. This is a very realistic portrayal of life in captivity but told with hope for the future.

Applegate concludes the story of Ivan in a way that is bittersweet, but ultimately satisfying. Really glad to have this final book to round out Ivan's story and how he faces his past when confronted with the future that comes with raising his babies. Applegate is so great at writing animal characters and making them seem real and complex without losing the heart that is so important. I love how she creates their voices and brings you into their world.

Ivan has been staple in classrooms and libraries for years and this book provides the perfect closure for our dear animal friends! This book sticks with page turning brevity, topics explained beautifully for young minds, and the same witty characters being themselves! Ivan and his “framily” once again shows resilience, love, tenderness, and growth. What an ending to this wonderful series!

I have loved every book in the Ivan quartet and this is no exception. In this final installment, Ivan is settled in his new zoo environment and is about to become a parent. I enjoyed how this really brings Ivan's story full circle while showing how his world has expanded from the cage he lived in in The One and Only Ivan. Excellent story for middle grade!

This was a great finale to The One and Only series! I loved sharing this book with my fourth grade class and loved it too.! We laughed and cried together. It was a delight to be back in Ivan’s world and to see things from his point of view. I highly recommend this book to all fans of The One and Only series!

I am so sad that this is the last "Ivan" book. I absolutely adore The One and Only Ivan; it is one of my favorite books of all time. The sequels have been good, valuable, and worth reading, but not to the impact of the original. The One and Only Family brings in the idea of Ivan becoming a father and what that means to him as a gorilla raised with humans. It is a lovely book, as are the others, and can be read independently, but reading them in order will be a much better experience.

Applegate returns with another beautiful, heart wrenching story. Our favorite characters are still out there living their lives and growing. I think this was a very good ending for the series. While it would be perfectly lovely to have more information about Ivan's kids and perhaps their further adventures, leaving it as this point wraps it up well enough that you don't feel like you're missing out on anything.

The One and Only Family is the fourth and final book in the series that began with The One and Only Ivan. This time around Ivan has found love with his habitat-mate, Kinyani. When he learns that he is going to be a father, he is both excited and terrified. Becoming a dad brings up painful memories for Ivan - from being captured by poachers and losing his twin sister, to being a pet and then kept on display at a shopping mall. As a silverback gorilla, Ivan's job is to protect his troop, most especially his children.

This sweet story nicely wraps up the series. While not quite as good as the first book in the series, this one was very enjoyable.

Thanks to HarperCollins and NetGalley for a review copy of The One and Only Family.

Ivan and Kinyani have twins! Ivan must find a way to be a silverback while in captivity and come to terms with never being in the wild again.

What a delightful sequel to "The One and Only" series. Applegate's books are truly beloved in my Media Center and this latest addition certainly reaffirms that sentiment.
Ivan is now grown up and becomes a dad himself and a father to twins at that. We are, once again, reunited with Bob and Ruby, who are as heartwarming, as ever! Ivan's past challenges are sensitively discussed and not glossed over.
Beautifully done!

In the heartwarming finale to the series that began with The One and Only Ivan, Ivan becomes a father to lively twins. After his difficult life of mistreatment, Ivan now lives in a wildlife sanctuary with his friends, including the young elephant Ruby and the former stray dog Bob. As Ivan prepares for fatherhood with fellow gorilla Kinyani, he tries to come to terms with his past and the heartbreaking knowledge that poachers killed his parents.
Author Katherine Applegate tackles this tough theme with honesty and sensitivity, making this a poignant read for young readers familiar with the previous books in the series.

Love, love, love! We all first fell in love with Ivan, Bob, and Ruby. And there is no way not to love them. We laughed and cried together. I loved this book and will definitely be purchasing it for our library.

The fourth in the quartet. In their new zoo habit, Ivan and Kinyani learn they are expecting. As Ivan prepares himself to be a dad, he is reminded of his younger years. Readers will experience friendship, love and empathy as they read what family truly means to Ivan.

What a sweet ending to the One and Only quartet of stories! Ivan becomes a dad in this last installment. I loved how Katherine Applegate puts Ivan's worries about impending fatherhood into kid-friendly language so that maybe they will understand where their own parents are coming from with their concerns. It was awesome to see the whole group of Ivan, Bob, and Ruby back together. While her previous books were sadder, I found this one more hopeful and light. Maybe that was me? Yes, there were parts where there was some melancholy and anxiety, but not nearly as much as Ivan's first book. Definitely purchasing a copy or two for my school library!
