Gage Greenwood is a writer of many books I have read and they all have been good. I am so grateful to have been able to read his latest book early as an arc. Thank you Netgalley.
This one wasn't for me. I liked the story and the concept, but did not vibe with the writing. But, it was very readable and I sped through it!
I have never felt so fulfilled and yet so empty while reading a book in my life. This was BLEAK, which I absolutely loved. I feel like I got my heart ripped out, chewed up, and spit out several times, then said, "Please, sir, I want some more." The author has no regard for your feelings, and I love him for that.
All of the characters were excellent, and I was emotionally attached to each of them. There are many characters, and the reader gets to know them well throughout the book. The setting was great, I grew up in Massachusetts, so Rhode Island isn't far off, and the author set the stage perfectly.
THIS is what I want to read when I read horror. This story was depressing, mysterious, scary, and exciting. The plot was great. There was a good amount of action that was well-written. This book was heartbreaking. There is a sense of dread and tension throughout the book. It expertly deals with difficult topics such as addiction, loss, trauma, and more.
It's the whole package. 5βοΈ rating, no question. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley & Author Gage Greenwood for an e-copy of this ARC in exchange for my review.
THIS STORY WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!
Right from the first chapter, it dug its hooks into my mind, and kept me engaged from the first page to the last.
This was the second book I've read from this author, and is BY FAR the best one I've read thus far.
I'd absolutely recommend checking this story to anyone who loves a good, creepy, coming-of-age story that follows undercurrents of grief, toxic family/family problems, and how a family can continue to work together despite all of the hardships they've been through.
10/10

My first book from this author, and I immediately added his previous books to my Amazon cart. I saw this book getting rave reviews on the Books of Horror page, so when the author offered another round of ARCs, I was first in line.
I've had to sit on this review for a few days, and I'm still coming up short with how to articulate the brilliance of this book. Part grief horror, part coming of age story, and part intricately woven folklore, it's a story that pulls you in from the first chapter and demands your attention until the end. You will care about these characters and will hold them close to your heart. You will share in their grief, and most of all, I believe, you will say, "I have monsters that haunt me, too."
The Keating family will stay with me for a long, long time. Their horrors, their despair, and their losses will linger in the corners of my mind just like their monster did. This is definitely a book that will make you feel something.
Many thanks to the author for an early copy. This is definitely one you want to pre-order. This title will publish February 10, 2024.

On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island releases: February 10, 2024
This is my first 2024 book I've read.
''On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island'' is a captivating horror book that is sure to leave a lasting impression on any avid horror fan. The author skillfully weaves a chilling narrative filled with suspense, terror, and unexpected twists. One of the standout aspects of this book is its ability to tap into primal fears and explore the depths of human psyche. It delves into themes of the supernatural, psychological horror, and the unknown, leaving readers questioning their own beliefs.
I learned two things while reading this book that will stick with me:
1. That grief can be a burden, but also an anchor.
2. That we don't own something just because we need it.
While the book may contain graphic and disturbing scenes, it serves the purpose of intensifying the horror and adding to the overall impact of the story.
I highly recommend picking up a copy of ''On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island''. Prepare to be terrified, looking around corners and even heart broken at some point, but more importantly, Welcome Home.
Four years after the Keating Family endured the most horrific night of their lives, they return to Block Island to uncover the truth about what happened. What they find is more terrifying than they could have imagined, and they quickly find themselves questioning whether they can survive their past.
Wooooow. I finished this book in 24 hours and it has taken me a day or two to settle into what I just experienced in order to write a review. This is one of the most touching, viscerally devastating books I have ever read. The way the author uses his writing style to explore the intricacies of PTSD, addiction, anxiety, family trauma and grief is beautifully haunting and heart wrenching. The characters are extremely well developed and I found myself attached to quite a few of them. This book is haunting, devastating, and incredible. This author is one to look out for. His writing and storytelling are unique and beautiful.
On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island follows four siblings and their father after a heart-rending loss destroys their peace, their family, and their sanity. Both a masterpiece of horror and an examination of the effects of grief and trauma, On a Clear Day will haunt you long after you read the final page. Gage does a fantastic job evoking raw, gritty emotions from his characters, making them feel real in ways few authors can successfully achieve. The story itself is haunting on multiple fronts, not just from the monsters, but from the human tragedy of it all. This is not a fairy tale, this is a horror, and you will live it right alongside Brian, Charlie, Chrissy, and Angela. Prepare to have your heart shattered by this emotionally gripping, unputdownable horror story. Bravo Gage Greenwood. This book is a masterpiece. Bravo!
This novel is a full on, no holds barred, action filled creature feature. The good kind where we know the monster is real from the very first chapter and things get progressively worse for the characters as it goes along.
A monster eats the eldest daughter of a family living on Block Island. That's the beginning and we get to experience this terrifying event right along with them.
Four years later and the remaining members of the family are still haunted and traumatized by this event. The other four siblings are handling it in different ways but none of them are the same. The father is an alcoholic who gave his children to his sister to take care of because he feels responsible.
But now the past is going to catch up with all of them as the monster that destroyed their lives is back hunting... and looking for them.
In this novel we have family issues, addiction, mental health problems and tragedy. It's a family torn apart with fear and grief.
We'll find out more about these monstrositys as the story goes along. There's a reason why they were chosen and when these secrets are revealed it makes their current situation even more hopeless.
There's a lot of bloody good action scenes in here and narrow escapes sometimes. Not everyone will make it and there's a particular death that blew my mind because I thought this character would be around till the end. Good stuff!
This is a fantastic, thrilling, horrifying novel and I highly recommend it.
One of the coolest sounding titles I've seen in a while along with a really nice looking cover and ends up falling flat for me. I was not a big fan of this but I am happy that it didn't take too much time or pretend to be anything more grand than what it is.
I absolutely loved this one! I have read everything of Gageβs and all I see is growth and more growth. The characters are relatable, the creatures are scary af and to top it off, he throws in some real life horrors that people should never have to go through. He has a wonderful way of making you feel a part of the story. If the character is confused or lost, you feel it too. My favourite part, he doesnβt bog down the story by overly describing everything. A definite 5 star book for me. I look forward to seeing where Gage goes next!
On A Clear Day You Can See Block Island is so close to perfection that it nearly became my favorite Gage Greenwood novel. Winter's Myths and Winter's Legacy are tough contenders however, and refused to be edged out. OACDYCSBI is filled with stunning prose and some of the most quotable passages I've ever read.
βGrief was a viral infection. It was as if someone injected them with extreme emotions by the needle full, and it swam in their blood, pumped through their heart, and brain, and coated their stomachs until theyβd vomit it out, confused and scared by the sickness. They didnβt know what was happening inside of them; they only knew it didnβt feel good.β
This is a bleak horror story which ruminates on themes of loss, grief, and difficult family dynamics. As always, Gage makes us fall in love with his characters, only to rip them from us in brutal fashion. Many readers are very upset about all of the deaths, but I think they were all necessary, or, if not strictly necessary, they at least all served a greater purpose in relation to the story.
Once again, Gage Greenwood has created a story that sucked me in right from the beginning, and has yet to let me go. I will be thinking about this one for a very long time to come. I only have one thing left to say. Fuck you Gage Greenwood. Fuck you very much.

βWelcome home.β
A widowed father and his five kids move to a new house and grieve the loss of their mother/his wife. But not long into settling in on Block Island, a grotesque creature of sorts eats the eldest sibling to death and now the family is left to deal with the lingering trauma from witnessing such a horrific event.
As the years pass, the family starts to question if what they saw was even real, or if they all lost their minds and made it up.
This is a coming-of-age horror story interweaving lore and alternate worlds.
Without spoiling what happens, thereβs not much going for it in terms of a happy ending, but it was a fairly solid read overall.
cw: mentions of suicide, ptsd, drug addiction and alcoholism, grief
βHorror wasnβt a spotlight on evil, it was control. If a person could create beautiful sentences from horrific events, then any person could weave their way though lifeβs trauma. You just had to make the grime shine.β

First things first, what a banger of a first chapter! I have to say I was so invested in the story after reading it last night that I just had to finish it as soon as I could.
On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island follows the Keating family after a series of traumatizing events. The reader gets to experience how each member of the family goes through their trauma and grief while nobody seems to believe their story.
So, when an opportunity to prove the legitimacy of what happened to them presents itself, the younger kids are quick to try and take it.
I love monster horror and I love when the genre discusses grief. However, I didn't feel attached to the characters (only to Angela and Chrissy), so as someone who is very character driven it felt hard to care sometimes. It felt like the characters didn't act and talk their ages and that bothered me a bit, but I figure that's a me thing, considering everything they were going through.
On a Clear Day, You Can See Block Island is a fast-paced horror novel that is also a coming of age, it has gore and a bit of body horror. It's quite addicting and hard to put down. This was my first book by the author and I'm interested in reading more from him.
I keep saying this with every new Gage Greenwood book that comes out, but it's true...On A Clear Day You Can See Block Island is his best work to date. I'm not going to review with spoilers, but just want to echo the sentiment of several other readers...the dialogue sounds so natural. The book, as a whole, does not seem rushed or disjointed. I do not have any triggers, but still had to stop reading several times just to let everything sink in. This story is an emotional rollercoaster that never lets up. I've always been a fan of Gage's whimsical side, but as his books have gotten darker, he's taken on an almost King-esque tone, which is a great thing. Added bonus...I love how he includes popular culture and his writing bretheren in the dialogue/environment. Thank you, Gage, for another beautiful story that will stick in my memory.
So this was my first Gage Greenwood and I was really excited for it. I received an ARC from NetGalley and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this book. The themes of grief are heavy and Mr. Greenwood can write gore artfully. The characters were mostly fleshed out well and I really enjoyed Charlie and Tiffany. The story moves quickly and definitely will have you hanging on.
There were a few aspects of the story that felt a bit unfinished so my main complaint with the book is it couldβve been longer. The folklore surrounding the evil was interesting but felt like an afterthought at times. There were a few situations I expected a more fleshed out explanation from that never came.
Regardless, this was an awesome book. I absolutely look forward to more books from this author in the future.
