Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
I really enjoyed the concept of this - having to date each zodiac sign? Sounds like a fun romcom. I will say depending on your sign, you may roll your eyes at some of these characters and their stereotypes. If you’re a fan of horoscopes and want to read a queer romance this is a fun palette cleanser 3.5 stars
It was a sweet story about finding yourself and learning how to date after a long relationship. Fairly predictable at times, but isn’t that what we’re looking for in a romance? It was a fun read!
I went into Looking for a Sign expecting a cute little romcom about dating and the zodiac and while there were definitely romcom moments, I feel like this book went much deeper than surface level romcom. Gray left her long term girlfriend because she finally let herself see that they didn't want the same things out of life, but she's clueless about what to do next. Which leads to best friend intervention and a small amount of chaos that results in a mission to date someone from each sign of the zodiac... While Gray is worried about where she'll find her next date, the universe has some twists and turns in store for her on her path to finding love.
Clever subject and warm entertaining story.
Each astrological date is a fun adventure. The main characters are rich with warmth and the children are adorable.
Overall good read.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review
ALL THE STARS! ALL THE FEELS! ALL THE QUEER LOVE! This book was incredible. I loved Gray so much. The zodiac dating challenge? Genius. I devoured this sapphic rom com and will definitely be reading anything Susie Dumond writes.
This was such a sweet story! There were so many moments that made me swoon, laugh and even cry!! I finished this book so quickly and look forward to reading more from this author.
Wanting to find her soulmate before her birthday, Gray’s childhood best friend helps her come up with a plan. Dating her way through each zodiac sign to find her match. Some dates go better than others but in the end maybe love is where she least expects it to be.
I absolutely loved this book. All the dates were so entertaining to read some fun, some spicy, some ending in pasta being dumped over someone’s head, it was all so good.
The plot was entertaining, the characters were well written, and I enjoyed all the queer romance moments. The friendships made through failed dates was something I wasn’t expecting. I loved how this ended and who Gray ended up with, I didn’t see that coming but was pleasantly surprised.
Very fun story! This was a cast of characters I want to know and hang out with. It also made me move New Orleans higher up on my travel list. Loved the main relationships as well as all the side stories that unfolded. I feel like I need to go visit and astrologer or figure out my birth chart, and am grateful this was a crash course in all the zodiac signs. Manages to be wholesome and spicy - a hard balance to capture!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for providing an ARC in exchange for a review.
A fun and sweet romance even though I was personally offended by the descriptions/depictions of Virgos! :)
Gray is reeling from a breakup. She is ready to meet the ‘one’ and build the loving and supportive family she didn’t have growing up. She moves to New Orleans to start a new job and, with the urging of her best friend, Gray embarks on a dating adventure where she dates a person with a different zodiac sign to see who she is most compatible with…
I am not into astrology at all but thought this was a delightful premise. Gray goes on a dozen dates, and they range from hilariously awful to amazing. Gray was a likable character and I’m glad she found happiness in the end (even though I thought she had more chemistry with some of the other contenders!).
Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a copy.
A woman, struggling with the loss of her relationship, moves away to start her life, gets help from her best friend and her family, and then turns to a specialist who reads her stars and tells her how to date the entire horoscope/zodiac to find her perfect match. She meets some great people and has some fun experiences, but, in the end, realizes that this exercise just helped her to look outside of her generally considered norm for people to date and experiences to have. She learns a lot about herself and her ability to be enough on her own. Fun book. Great characters. I'm excited for more from this author1
I received an ARC from the author.
As Gray’s 29th birthday approaches, she is determined to meet someone and settle down to build the loving, accepting family she’s always wanted.
When Gray’s best friend Cherry suggests she look for answers in Madame Nouvelle Lune, and astrologer, Gray is skeptical, but desperate. When she’s encourages to look to the stars, she decides to date someone of each sign before her birthday.
As she moves through the signs in search for true love, new challenges arise and she learns a lot about her own needs, desires, and sense of adventure.
I love queer rom coms. They are just so much fun and I get lost in them. After a particularly busy week at work, I needed an escape, and this book delivered.
I’m a Pisces, and true to my sign, I’m a bit of a dreamer and tend to get lost in things, the astrology is one of them. I grounded myself by marrying a Capricorn. Yes, he can be a jerk, but not usually to me. Which is pretty stereotypical Capricorn, I’m in his circle of trust that consists of two people, lol.
As Gray set off to work through the astrological signs, I buckled in to learn about a few of them. I haven’t spent much time around Aries or really any fire signs, so had a lot of learning to do, but I enjoyed her journey! Water and fire don’t really go well together so I think that I’ve always kept a natural distance. I enjoyed how the author didn’t just make certain signs seem “good” and other seem “bad”. They brought balance to all of them.
It was so much fun getting to see the different stereotypical of the different characters that Gray was going on dates with. Of course, I was kept waiting for the Pisces as the last sign of the zodiac, but I wasn’t surprised by how their date turned out. I’ve been on many dates where I have found myself as the listener and detached, much like Grays date was, and that’s okay! I can be good at it when I am up for it!
As for the ending of this one and who Gray ended up with, I did see it coming, I don’t think that it was a surprise, but it was still a super sweet story and a wonderful journey.
Hey, the next time I’m single maybe I’ll date through the signs. Though I already know to steer clear of few signs based on experience – ha!
I also loved the addition of cocktails and recipes at the end of this one! I’ll have to check them out.
A copy of this review will be featured on my blog, speedreadstagram.com closer to publication.
I thought the idea of this book was so cute and fun. I’m a fellow single Aries and recently 29, so I felt I was in a similar boat to Gray. And I loved the idea of going on dates with the 3 other astrological signs to find love but I just wasn’t the biggest fan of the one Gray ended up with.
I did love Gray and Cherry’s friendship/found family vibes. I was just routing for another one of the dates to be the one! Hahah
Overall a fun read and I love the representation!
Thank you to Random House and Netgalley for this eARC.
This was great! I know I own a copy of Queerly Beloved, and thought I had read it, but as I looked back when I got this one, I started to doubt myself. So now that I've finished this, I am definitely picking it back up.
This was a great book. I wasn't entirely sure how it would play out. It's certainly not the norm to have a rom-com with the main character going on dates (and more) so many different characters, but I still enjoyed them all, even the awkward ones. I will agree with another reviewer I said that it seemed like all the characters fit a bit too perfectly into their various signs, almost to the point of caricature, but at the same time, we only get a short-ish snippet with them, similar to how Gray does, so I think that is certainly forgivable.
Gray herself was an enjoyable protagonist, if maybe a bit conceited (is that an Aries thing? I confess I'm not as in-depth in my knowledge of most of the signs). It felt like, with the exception of the one date she goes on, people went out of their way to stress just how hot Gray was, and it seemed obvious that she agreed with them.
I am going to disagree with a bunch of people about the hatred for the LI she ends up going with. There were some I could have seen (the Gemini comes to mind), but honestly, with the different layers we get of her actual LI, I honestly found her to be the most well rounded character in the whole book, flawed and wonderful, and could absolutely see how Gray fell for her, eventually. Definitely my favourite character. Apart from the LI, Cherry was a scene stealer. Just awesome BFF energy (and special nod to her husband Robbie, he was swell as well).
All in all, this was a great book, and the bonus content after the acknowledgements (horoscopes, recipes, etc) was a wonderful final touch. 4.5 stars rounded down.
Okay…so I know very little about astrology and only know a bit about my own sign so I wasn’t sure if I would like this book or not and I was so glad I read it! This book was light-hearted and so much fun! I felt like the main character was my friend and I was able to be a part of the dating fun. The characters were so fun and adorable and I loved them! Great, fast, adorable queer read!
Growing up very much like our main character, Gray, in a deeply conservative home and church in the South, I was always looking for lighthearted stories of queer love to guide my way in the dark. Unfortunately, there weren’t any! The very few LGBTQ books within my reach were depressing and heavy. So there’s a sweet kind of subversion here in Gray starring in the book she probably needed too!
There’s a lot to love in Looking For a Sign. It does an excellent job balancing various views and knowledge level about astrology. It showcased so many different races, genders, body types, etc. in Gray’s quest to date every sign. There were a few seriously hilarious moments, one where I had to put the book down and get myself together from wheeze-laughing with second-hand embarrassment. And best of all, Gray figures out some really important life lessons about Queer Time (not existing inside the heteronormative timeline of perpetual misery).
The only thing I really struggled with was just how reasonable and mature and communicative Gray and Veronica were with each other. They were SO HEALTHY. I kind of loved it but I also kinda missed that desperation angst that usually comes with romances.
An awesome queer beach read, which is, amazingly. a real thing now!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the chance to read this ARC and provide an honest review.
While I did enjoy this LBGTQIAP+ rom com, I had a hard time liking the main character. They gave me "pick me" vibes that I couldn't shake. And I feel like none of the other characters were very likable either.
Cute idea, I think the characters were not likeable for me.
This read was exactly what I needed. The plot is ADORABLE. The MC and supporting characters are ADORABLE. The found family between Gray and Cherry was the hi-light of the book for me. I loved reading the parts where they interacted. The added component of Cherry also having her own made family that supported and loved Gray was a huge bonus. I think Cherry was my favourite person in the book, Gray was lovable but sometimes needed to be humbled.
I loved the aspect of getting to see glimpses of each sign and how that affected how they all interact and appear in the world really had me reflected on myself and the people I surround myself with. As a Scorpio (Captain Hook is also my misunderstood villain), I am biased in saying that date might have been my favourite. The dates were my favourite part and considering all the signs I have dated had me giggling. I also love how the ending of the book pulled it all together.
Speaking of the ending, I had accidentally read another review that said they didn’t like who the FMC ends up with. I tried to keep an open mind about it because I wasn’t quite sure who they could be referring to because I LOVED who the FMC ends up with. I think it is a true testament to opposites attracting. Sure, Gray had chemistry with other dates, and maybe even more chemistry, but the author does a great job of showing that there is more to finding your person than just common interests and great s*x. That maybe we can have more than one soulmate, it kind of takes the pressure off if you ask me.
All in all, I loved this book. I read it in my one day because I was immediately hooked and needed to see how it would end. When it is published I will be grabbing a copy as well as telling all my friends to too.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC of this book!
While I definitely enjoyed this lighthearted novel, I have to agree with what other reviewers have already said. Gray, our protagonist, was incredibly endearing and I related a lot to them as a fiery Aries myself (one who married a Libra at that!), and while the romance was super cute, I wasn't suuuuuper into who she ends up with. The ending of the book did feel a little rushed, as well.
I know others have mentioned that the other signs were too stereotypical, and they certainly were, but I think it worked for the purposes of this novel. The Scorpio cracked me up, and the Aries/Aries dynamic is on point.
Overall, I think this book is great for anyone who wants a lighthearted sapphic romance that isn't too serious or angsty.
As a fellow Aries, I saw a lot of myself within Gray! I'm even on the same journey as her so this couldn't have been a more perfectly timed read. Having a quarter-life crisis and feeling like she's falling behind, Gray looks to the stars and one Madame Nouvelle Lune for help, she finds herself in a dating challenge with each of the zodiac signs to achieve her dream of finding her soulmate and starting a family. With a unique plot such as this, the book introduced a colorful cast of characters that you can't help but love.
I enjoyed Gray and Cherry's relationship. They are the best friends and unconditionally support and love one another. They also weren't afraid to have tough conversations and, in my opinion, this helped Gray to grow.
I also loved the diversity of the characters and dates. Gray's dates range in sexuality, gender, and race. Each character felt fully developed and I found myself agreeing and keeping tabs similar to how Gray was. It is such a breath of fresh air to the romance genre!
Thank you Netgalley & Random House Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the characters and pacing of this book! It was such a fun premise, and I felt like it moved at a good pace to keep me interested, but not feel like it was dragging or flying by too quickly.
