Eleven “horror”comics (they aren’t that scary but might be scary for young children) that would be great for young kids. The cute “Viola Bloom” is a standout.
Overall I enjoyed Bad Dreams by Ellis. It's described as "a graphic novel version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and I think that's spot on. It has a campfire tales vibe that is fun. It's like Scary stories to tell in the dark for an older crowd. Readers who like the horror on the less intense side may enjoy this. Its more spooky to me then horrifying.
However it has also been described as "a perfect gift for people who love Black Mirror and Stranger Things and listened to podcasts like Welcome to Nightvale and Rabbits" ( This was on amazon) and that I don't really agree with.
Bad dreams in the night, in my opinion, does not have the gut punch of Black mirror, the suspense of stranger things, or the eeriness other worldliness of Welcome to Nightvale.( I can't speak to Rabbits). All of these are properties I vey much love and know well.. think these comparisons may ultimately hurt the book because people will be expecting something darker/eerier than they get.
I loved it!! The stories were really original and unique. I find it hilarious that the milk door story was inspired by a real life emotional reaction to a friend moving away.
I received a free ARC, and this review is voluntary.
Ellis pays homage to an era before the interconnectivity of technology. With each story comes history, personal in its nature, told through a different lense, or perspective. The underlying elements of heart and soul are evident, as each chapter unfolds in a way that only someone who has the lived the experience can tell it. Our very real fears being shown, or conveyed through the life of someone else. Beautiful in it's presentation, and wonderful in it's display.
Anyone that can tell a gripping story in such few pages deserves 5 stars! These thought provoking horror one offs are so delightfully creepy! Bus stop was my favorite because that theory (don’t want to give it away) is one of the creepiest and I love reading stories from people.
If you like horror definitely give this a read! If you were a 90’s kid like me, then definitely read it! Each story reminds me of Are you afraid of the dark? And, like the first story they give you a sense of nostalgia but you can’t quite put your finger on why! The dark sense of humor adds a great touch on some of the tales too!
I’ve read Adam Ellis’s book before, Super Chill, and I remember it being hilarious, so I was intrigued to see that this book is categorized into horror. TBH I don’t normally read horror too but as I said, I was intrigued.
This book contains 11 graphic short stories with various styles, and different ways to tell the story as well. In some stories Adam even collaborated with other illustrators for the backgrounds, which is cool. Just look at the 3rd slide, that’s just the title pages but you can see that the drawing styles are all different.
The story itself isn’t too scary for me (speaking as someone who doesn't read horror). Some illustrations are gory but it’s cartoon, so. One thing that I love the most is that Adam included an author's note after each of the stories about the inspiration or context, and he added some light humor there to neutralize the “feeling” after reading the story.
I don’t think I have a favorite story but I have one that really made me nervous and had to pause reading until it’s broad daylight outside, and that is the final story🙂 and the ending??? Adam Ellis you’re so sneaky 🙂🙂🙂
Overall that’s quite a reading experience, and I love it.
Pretty good anthology by Adam Ellis. These tales of horror explore mundane themes, supernatural stuff and body horror, among others. The quality varies, of course, but overall I found all the stories at least good. Some of them even managed to make me apprehensive and a little scared, which is rare.
I've been a fan of Adam Ellis for many years, I've followed his art evolution and am always inspired and impressed by his talent. When I saw this ARC was available on NetGalley, I quickly requested it. Since I'm a follower of his social media accounts, I knew of some of these short comic stories and am thrilled to have finally been able to read them in full. The best part is the explanations at then end where he explains where he came up with his ideas.
The art is gorgeous, which is not surprising at all. But the stories are haunting and entertaining. What a lovely transition from his witty commentary comments to these horror inspired ones. 10/10 would and will recommend. And really hope Adam continues his artistic and story telling journey.
Very entertaining anthology with a strong vibe of online creepy pastas, I've been a fan of Adam Ellis webcomics for quite some time, but I never got a chance to properly read his horror stories. I'm not sure if all of those compiled in this volume were published online before, but I really enjoyed reading them all at once. They reminded me of the old days of the internet, when you browsed forums at night to give yourself chills from creepy stories pasted there. I wouldn't say that all chapters had the same impact, a few endings were rather flat, but I loved the Halloween-like atmosphere of it (I wish I read it around September). The last story was probably my favorite - properly scary with an absolutely creepy ending.
I really enjoyed this book! The artwork was spectacular and I loved the short, horror stories which were incredible to read. It was an amazing book!
I liked this collection of short horror comics. The stories were creepy and unsettling, and I really liked the artwork. I just wish the stories were a little longer. I think this collection will appeal to lovers of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
My favorite stories were Me and Evangeline at the Farm, Milk Door, and Green Ribbon.
I would definitely check out more of Ellis’s comics in the future.
I've been a big fan of Adam Ellis' work since back in the Books of Adam blog days. This horror collection does not disappoint. Each story is a bite size spook and ends with a personal anecdote giving the inspiration for the comic. The illustrations are great and so much of the background art is really gorgeous. This is one I'd revisit again and again when I'm in the mood for a spooky story.
Thanks to netgalley for letting me read the ARC of this graphic novel.
Inside we find eleven different stories drawn by Adam Ellis. The drawings are beautiful.
Just from the figures and the colors, you enter a very creepy and disturbing atmosphere. The stories are very particular, some of them I wouldn't really call horror but truly scary due to the meaning they contain.
After each story the author explains to us why he thought of drawing it.
Definitely creepy stories.
*I was provided an ARC of this book for no cost* I adored this book. I am really kinda of a wuss when it comes to horror but these were so creepy but short enough that I didn't have to close the book and walk away to unscare myself lol. Me and Evangeline at the Farm and Little House in the Sea will be the stories that will stick with me. I think that both really feed into my fear of loneliness.
The art is perfect and exactly what I was hoping for from Adam. I have loved his comics for a long time and was so happy to get to read this. I will be buying the physical copy as soon as I can. I 100% recommend this book :)
As a huge fan of Adam Ellis, I was excited for the opportunity to read and review this new selection of horror comics. While they were entertaining and eerie, I am a bit disappointed that many of these stories are not new, and have been posted on Adam’s Instagram before. It was still enjoyable to page through and relive the stories, but I had been hoping for something new and fresh.
I have been following Adam's art for years so I was so excited to read this and I knew I would love it just as much as I did. As always it was very well done!
Really enjoyed Bad Dreams in the Night, I think Bus Stop, Viola Bloom & Evangeline were my favourites of the bunch.
I admit I had to skip a few panels in Hang Nail, I thought Butter Crown Ramen was pretty visceral and then there was Hang Nail...🫣
Loved the little anecdotes after each story, they provided more context and some of them were funny little stories within themselves.
(I received this book from the editor and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
If you like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, or the Goosebumps TV series, Adam Ellis’ horror comic book is everything you could ask and more. Divided in different short stories, some black and white, some coloured, and with an author’s note after each one of them (the one after The Green Ribbon being, in my opinion, the best), this collection has a little bit of everything. So let’s dive in (no spoilers, promise):
Me & Evangeline at the farm could have been a creepy pasta. A film no one has seen, dark figures, a mysterious barn… It was just the perfect beginning. Dealing with movies/tv, we also have Better Kate than Never.
Milk Door, Butter Corn Ramen and especially Hangnail are my worst nightmares. Body horror at its best!
Then there’s the already mentioned The Green Ribbon, a gothic tale based in an Irving novel.
In the eerie area, we have Forest Fruit, Bus Stop and Little House in the Sea. Both Forest Fruit and Little House… are, I think, the shortest stories in the book, and they really use this in their advantage. Bus Stop has you guessing from the beginning.
And then, there’s Murder Party and the success of true crime podcasts. I really enjoyed this one, especially the ending (and the note!).
I was not ready for the last story of the book, the more sinister one: Viola Bloom. The way in which the author introduces himself into the nightmare, the way he navigates the menace… It was very, very well done.
Adam Ellis delivers yet again! A great horror collection with his signature style. Already ordered my physical copy.
THIS WAS TERRIFYING. But so so good. I've followed the artist on Instagram for a while and didn't actually realize this was his book at first, but loved the cover and thought the art looked like his. (I got an ARC on NetGalley.)
Every story is so creepy and unsettling. The last one especially had my heart pounding. I almost threw my phone across my bed cause it freaked me out so much! Perfect for horror fans or if you're in the mood to get unsettled and creeped out by normal, every day things with a twist.
