In the same class since the first year of middle school, Ren and Kai share a bond whose intensity and comfort they have learned to take for granted. When they get assigned to different classes in the final year, they feel an unwarranted discomfort. As the year progresses and their commitments diversify, a sharp sense of drifting away nags them. They slowly realize there is something more than friendship between them.
My Ultramarine Sky is a standalone high school BL romance. A quick and heartwarming read, it features a supportive cast of friends. The only disappointment was the confession confrontation that felt weak. I would have liked a little angst, more conflict, and drama😅
Tropes: Childhood friends to lovers. Comfort vibes. Slow-burn. Dual POV. Sleep confession. A pretend bl turning real.
Sweet. It was impactful enough to intrigue me into trying other books from Nagisa Furuya.
I thank NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the eARC copy of this heartwarming graphic novel. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was a cute manga story and a classic friends-to-lovers romance. It was pretty slow-burn and utilized the miscommunication trope, which I can only appreciate in small doses. It was an overall OK story, nothing necessarily bad about it, but also not incredibly memorable either.
This is a sweet stand-alone childhood best friends high school BL. It's a pretty straight-forward story of one character pining for their best friend, and the best friend trying to figure out how he feels about it. There were a few scenes that I really enjoyed where I could feel the angsting the characters were going through, and those kind of scenes are why I love reading romance.
Kai is kind of annoying - but in a way that reminds me of myself... so maybe it's a little endearing? Overall, this was a really cute and fun quick read!
Thank you to NetGalley for the copy for an honest review and I must say, it was a great read. From the start, we learn of the friendship between Kai and Ren and how feelings get complicated as the two are separated into different classes for the first time. What I loved most about this book was the portrayal of friendship turning into something more. The chemistry between Kai and Ren is apparent, and their journey from friends to something more is a rollercoaster as they both confront their feelings for each other. It felt relatable, making their love story all the more sweet.
My Ultramarine Sky is a wonderful blend of romance, friendship, and coming of age, with a likable friend group. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a short read that will touch your heart.

thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the digital review copy!
this manga was filled with my favorite little bl tropes and did not disappoint when it came to the comfort level expected from nagisa furuya.
kai and ren, friends since middle school are suddenly separated into different high school classes. growing apart, they must navigate their feelings of love, jealousy, and friendship.
this manga is short and sweet, not too much angst and not to much to think about— in fact, i think this read would have benefit from being longer! i love the childhood flashbacks and would have loved to see more from these charming characters.
either way, “my ultramarine sky” is a great standalone for anyone looking for a heartwarming bl and a quick read.
There is a delicate balance between overdone romance and just that almost kind of love that has the perfect tension for me as a reader. This was the perfect buildup and backstory that is truly reminiscent of high school and the complex emotions and dynamics.
This isn't my normal genre of manga let alone reading but the friendships and characters felt fairly dynamic and were easy to connect with. A great start!
This was super cute!! I loved the way we got to see both of them come to terms with their feelings for the other. I really liked both of the main characters, and even for a single volume the side characters were useful in advancing the story. I was feeling so emotional by the end waiting to see if they'd get together or not, and the conclusion was perfect. A great read, especially for a single volume! For sure going to check out this author's other work.
3,5 stars — This was just an incredible wholesome story about two boys being friends, tranforming into lovers.
I loved the characters and you got o know them pretty well, even though it's a somewhat short story. I was rooting for them.
I wish there was a little more romance but other than that, it was a fun and cute read.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC.
An adorable school romance. Perfect for anyone who like things on the sweeter side. I feel like the author captured how easy it is for younger people to be oblivious to their feelings and the angst of unrequited love.
by the end I just wanted more of their story. the art style really allowed the characters' personalities shine through. look forward to adding this one to my collection <3
I enjoyed this so much! The tension, the will they/wont they, the drama and knowing as an audience how they both feel. It was very easily a book I want on my manga shelf. I shall also be reading more by this author.
I really like Nagisa Furuya's work but this really needed to be a longer story. It felt like there was this big build up to something happening and then it was just Kai going like, "oh you knew and you ignored it, not cool" and then Ren going "oh, I guess I do actually like him" then end. I would have been nice to see more of them figuring stuff out and it would have been really nice to see more of them together because we get almost none of that. But overall the story is good and the art is great. The friend group was interesting too.

The first thing I noticed was that there were some speech bubbles that didn't really help me understand which character was saying that. It was frustrating because the story and the characters were really likable. Also, it took me a while to notice the order of those bubbles was not in the Western way, even though the pages were.
Aside from that, it was really cute and wholesome. I enjoyed reading their love story, and the other characters were interesting, too. I do have to say that I have mixed feelings about them making them do BL. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about it.
Lastly, the drawing style was superb, which is common in Manga.

thank you to kodansha comics and netgalley for an e-arc of this manga. all thoughts are my own and not influenced in any way.
if there are no scenes where one of them confesses their love to the other when they think the other is asleep, i don't want it🤭
this was so wholesome. this lowkey reminded me of sasaki and miyano. although, this is a one shot, the vibes are pretty similar.
kai and ren have been classmates since the first year of middle school. but in the last year of high school, they aren't assigned the same class anymore. kai feels like he & ren are slowly drifting apart. *cue the confession from one while the other is sleeping scene* each of them slowly discover that they have feelings for the other one.
i loved getting both pov's in this manga. it made for a much more refined and fleshed out story imo, atleast for a one shot. i do wish we had more volumes so we could have gotten much more invested in their romance. but this was a solid read for what it was, especially considering the length. i found myself rooting for kai & ren and absolutely squealing towards the end. this makes me more interested in picking up my summer of you by the same author. since that has multiple volumes, im existed to see if we get a more in depth relationship development. this is a short, cute, fun, heartwarming read that is definitely worth picking up.
out on 26/12/23.
the illustrations are absolutely so pretty and this was the cutest thing ever. i needed this in my life. so adorable!!!!
My Ultramarine Sky follows Ren and Kai, who have been in the same class for 5 years, only to find out their last year of high school that they are in different classes. As the school year progresses, they come to realize their friendship may have always been something a little more, and they start to struggle with their feelings towards each other.
I thought this was a super cute LGBT high school romance. I really enjoyed being able to see both characters points of view, and how they slowly realized their feelings towards each other. The artwork was very detailed and enjoyable. I also enjoyed the fact that this seems to be a standalone, so I don't have to invest in a ton of volumes.
This would be great for anyone looking for a gay high school romance that is very sweet. Bonus points for the fact that this can be read as a stand alone!
Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review.
5/5 stars
A one-shot manga about two longtime friends exploring their feelings for each other. There's not a lot of angst or drama; it's just a sweet and comforting read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
Thank you Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for this ebook. I am newer to manga but I’m really starting to like it. Nagisa Furuya’s story of first love is wonderful! Kai and Ren met in middle school and have ended up in the same home room every year until this year. Can their friendship survive being apart? Kai has struggled with his feelings for Ren for awhile so when he finds Ren asleep he confesses his feelings. But Ren wasn’t asleep. Did he hear what Kai said? Are they still ok? A super cute slow burn! It’s sweet watching Kai struggle with his feelings and being awkward around Ren. It’s charming and will give all the warm and fuzzies!
Kai and Ren have been in the same class/homeroom since middle school. That all changes during their third year of high school. Separation helps Kai realize his true feelings for Ren. However, he fears confessing would jeopardize their friendship. Then things grow strained between the boys when Kai accidentally states his feelings. Does Ren feel the same?
This is such a cute and sweet high school romance. There is no heat or spice – which I am totally fine with. The story did not need that. I enjoy the wholesome vibe this manga gave off. It is a one-shot, kind of like MY SUMMER OF YOU.
If you like raunchy BL, then this manga is not for you.
I cannot wait to buy this manga to add to my collection.
A cute one-shot about some boys who've been friends for a long time and realize, little by little, that they definitely feel like more than friends.
It's a pretty standard book (childhood friends, oblivious gay(s), "but we're both boys," telling someone you like them while you think they're sleeping, but this one adds in a sort of gay chicken they both play along with (though it's more tropey and encouraged by friends than like pushing someone farther to chicken out).
A cute addition to the "cute and fluffy high school BL" bucket.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the eARC!
