Thank you for letting me read this manga. This is a super cute story of two boys who have been friends forever and slowly realise that there may be moor between them. Very adorable.
Nagisa Furuya's 'My Ultramarine Sky' is a delightful manga that surpassed my expectations. As someone unfamiliar with Furuya's previous works, I approached this volume with cautious optimism, only to be pleasantly surprised.
This charming coming-of-age tale follows two best friends navigating their final year of school as they come to terms with their growing romantic feelings for each other. Despite the seemingly familiar 'friends to lovers' theme, it was still an amazing read and I was left with positive feelings.
I found myself completely immersed in the story, finishing it in a single sitting curled up in bed. I was left kicking my feet and giggling at the protagonists' interactions.
Visually, the manga is a treat for the eyes, with a beautiful art style that perfectly complements the heartfelt storyline. Furuya's language may have been simple but it wasn't any less charming, making it both easy and enjoyable to read. (Kudos to the translators as well).
I was so enthralled with the story that upon finishing it, I immediately searched to buy the second volume, but was sad to find out it was just this one. That has to be the only downside to an otherwise amazing story.
Ultimately. 'My Ultramarine Sky' has firmly secured its place as one of my top recommendations for a short romance manga.
This one as short and sweet.
A love story between friends that finally understand their feelings when an unexpected distance makes them make time for each other and not take the others presence for granted.
This was a short and sweet, childhood friends-to-lovers LGBTQ+ story. Set largely in a classroom setting, Kai and Ren's relationship develops after an unintentional confession. While there's nothing that makes this book stand out from other shounen-ai novels, fans of the genre will appreciate another published English addition to the genre.
The story is so sweet and adorable! I love the art style as well, it looks very serene. This is a very quick read and a simple one. No other complications just the two of them trying to figure things out 💙

This was a really sweet BL manga, which I really enjoyed.
Kai and Ren have been best friends since middle school and have always been in class together, until they are separated during their third year of high school. The distance then begins to move and change what was between them. Although they both had feelings for each other, neither had ever shown it to the other.
But when there is such a strong feeling, you can't stay away and luckily they manage to talk and confess what they feel, putting an end to that torment that weighed on both of them.
It was painful to see them hide their feelings, because those two are really two sweet fools, made for each other.
I really liked the POV change mid-story and the bonus chapter.
This manga is spicy free, so I really recommend it to everyone.
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to preview it.
“My Ultramarine Sky,” by Nagisa Furuya
A cute love story about two high school friends who are not sure how to tell each other they are in love with the other. It was well written, and the art was super good. It was a bit sad at times and hopeful at other times. A really good Shounen Ai to read. 4 out of 5 stars.
Navies Furuya has somehow found a way to make me care rather deeply about two characters and their relationship in under 200 pages. I’ve read longer books that haven’t done that!
I really enjoyed the nonlinear timeline here, with the flashbacks adding more dimension and depth to the characters individually and together.
If a sequel were to come out, I’d very happily read it.
Summary:
Kai and Ren have been good friends ever since they got assigned to the same homeroom in middle school. They spent years sharing classes and enjoying their time together. Yet it isn't until they're separated that they realize something else may be going on.
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. It can also make you realize your true feelings. Neither Kai nor Ren was prepared for this realization – or the implications. Worse, they won't know if it's mutual until one of them is brave enough to broach the subject.
Review:
Another endearing and slow-burn romance! My Ultramarine Sky is very genuine and sweet, as two teenagers realize their friendship is actually something more. You love to see it happen (especially when it goes well).
There's a lot to appreciate in this one. Mainly, I adored the characters. Kai and Ren are a lot of fun, as are their friends. We're talking about a great support system – one that admittedly also has a good sense of humor.
I love that My Ultramarine Sky basically shows both perspectives of the story. I feel like that was essential, especially given how otherwise short this story was (will there be more? I have no idea).
Highlights:
Manga
Romance – Yaoi
LGBT – M/M Romance
Thanks to Kodansha Comics and #NetGalley for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was so cute!! My second book by this author and I'm definitely hooked now and need to binge all the other books. It's so wholesome, and although the plot isn't anything new, I enjoyed it a lot and will be recommending it to everyone I know.
Book Review for: "My Ultramarine Sky" by Nagisa Furuya
Source: ARC from NetGalley
Score: 4/5 stars
The book "My Ultramarine Sky" is a beautiful one-shot manga that follows two friends as they navigate their feelings and become lovers.
Plot:
Kai and Ren have been in the same class from middle school into high school and now they are in separate classes. Kai feels that their friendship is slowly slipping away. One day, he confesses his feelings to a sleeping Ren. Eventually, the boys become romantically involved with each other.
This manga did a beautiful job at using the "friends to lovers" trope to build a heartfelt and wholesome story between Kai and Ren. There are flashbacks that help develop the reader's connection with the two characters as we see them grow and learn about themselves.
Writing:
For a short graphic novel, this book uses words and expressions with intention. The illustrations are so expressive and the dialogue between characters feels authentic.
Overall, the book moves quickly but still leaves a lasting impression.
Characters:
The characters are so well thought out. Kai and Ren are so different and their personalities really help the story feel more loving and wholesome.
Finale:
Overall, it was good to see a m/m romance that represented boys falling in love in a tender and beautifully illustrated manner.
I was able to access this book after it had already been published which is why I'm only just reviewing it now.
I've fallen more and more into the bl stories in books and shows, and it's truly wonderful. As I read this I could vividly see this playing out in a show. I truly loved this story and was invested from the first page. I never wanted it to end.
Thank you Netgalley for an arc of this book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley.
I'm a huge fan of graphic novels and mangas, so I'm always excited when I'm able to get my hands on one from NetGalley. The plot / storyline of this one was definitely interesting and more on the unique side of things for me.
The graphics were great, the storyline was great. would definitely read again.
A cute and youthful BL story where we meet two friends who seem to not want to take the first step for fear of ruining a precious friendship they have, but everything changes when they are separated from the course and begin to distance themselves little by little.
My Ultramarine Sky is a super light manga that reads very quickly and leaves you wanting to know a little more about their relationship. I don't see that it has a second part and I think it's fine, Nagisa Furuya told what he wanted to tell and it ended in a closed and good way.
Ideal to clear your head, to read a youthful love story full of fears, indecisions and friendships.
Thank you Kodansha Comics for the ARC I read on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed My Ultramarine Sky! I've read other BL stories from this author and I remember liking those too. This is a sweet story that follows Kai and Ren, two friends who have been close since the beginning of middle school. When they are suddenly placed in different classes in their second year of high school, Kai and Ren begin to grow apart which causes both of them to feel nervous.
I love best friends to lovers stories, and this one followed the trope well. It's just one volume so it was a quick read, but it didn't feel too short, which can happen sometimes with a 1 vol. manga.
This was good! I recommend it if you enjoy sweet BL stories or if you've read Nagisa Furuya's other work.
My Ultramarine Sky by Nagisa Furuya is a sweet story friend to more romance about Kai and Ren, who realize that they have romantic feelings for each other after being placed in different classes. Their struggles and more as they come to terms with their feelings and bring their emotions to the front for you to feel drawn in.
This story felt way too fast, but I think that was just my enjoyment of this simple world built for us to join and the endearment we get for Kai and Ren as they face their emotions; the portrayal of their transition from friends to lovers is beautiful. I wish I got more of these two for sure!
My Ultramarine Sky was a delightful read about two friends, Kai and Ren, who have always been together during every school year. After not being in the same class for the first time, they realize that they have developed romantic feelings for each other and must navigate their emotions and the challenges of being apart.
Altogether, it was a straightforward yet sweet friends-to-lovers romance, and I really enjoyed the journey of these two characters. I only wished it was a series, as Kai and Ren figure out and accept their feelings for each other in this one volume. Seeing their romance develop over multiple volumes would have been great to create a more memorable story.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

Unfortunately, the romance plot of this story did not catch my interest. It was not that original and it lacked depth, while the multitude of side characters did not help it either. Upon skimming through the whole book, I am quite sure that it would not have been a great BL story for me. The artwork was nice though, as well as the elements related to shogi (Japanese chess) that were included.
What a lovely, lovely story. Ren and Kai have been classmates for years, but for their last year, they’ve been assigned to different classes. Kai is finding it more difficult, because he’s had a crush on Ren for some time. As they try to figure out the new normal, Ren comes to realise he might have feelings too.
First chapters are from Kai’s point of view and the last two from Ren’s, which gives lovely insight to both of them. Illustrations are good. The volume is complete, but I wouldn’t mind reading more.
