My Ultramarine Sky was a delightful read about two friends, Kai and Ren, who have always been together during every school year. After not being in the same class for the first time, they realize that they have developed romantic feelings for each other and must navigate their emotions and the challenges of being apart.
Altogether, it was a straightforward yet sweet friends-to-lovers romance, and I really enjoyed the journey of these two characters. I only wished it was a series, as Kai and Ren figure out and accept their feelings for each other in this one volume. Seeing their romance develop over multiple volumes would have been great to create a more memorable story.

Unfortunately, the romance plot of this story did not catch my interest. It was not that original and it lacked depth, while the multitude of side characters did not help it either. Upon skimming through the whole book, I am quite sure that it would not have been a great BL story for me. The artwork was nice though, as well as the elements related to shogi (Japanese chess) that were included.

What a lovely, lovely story. Ren and Kai have been classmates for years, but for their last year, they’ve been assigned to different classes. Kai is finding it more difficult, because he’s had a crush on Ren for some time. As they try to figure out the new normal, Ren comes to realise he might have feelings too.

First chapters are from Kai’s point of view and the last two from Ren’s, which gives lovely insight to both of them. Illustrations are good. The volume is complete, but I wouldn’t mind reading more.

A pleasant, quick read with a simple story of boys discovering their feelings.

I wasn't exactly blown away by it, but I will give a shot to the author's most known comic in the future nonetheless

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the ARC!

3 ⭐ - this was such a cute and sweet friends to lovers story. This was also my first time ever reading a manga. New year, new reading goals? 😂

Anyway the story did not disappoint and I might try reading some other manga.

This book was super cute. I'm a big fan of this creator so I'll probably read anything they put out. I would have liked to see more between Ren and Kai, however I did like how their story played out.

What an absolutely endearing story about coming of age but also finding your feet in romance you don't always think will work out. I love the BL world a lot and this did it justice in weaving you into the story with the characters from one point of view to the other. I really enjoyed it a lot!

My Ultramarine Sky is a cute friends to lovers BL manga. Kai and Ren have been in the same class since middle school but in their last year of high school they are placed in separate classes. This separation makes the two realize their feelings may run deeper than friendship.

The story may be cliche but its still a good story. The story is slow paced but that is not a bad thing, this allowed the characters to process their feelings for each other. A reader is able to get a connection for the characters with this type of writing. The artwork is simple, nothing elaborate but that works for this story. Its a easy type of art that is nice to look at as one reads along.

If you like an easy love story this is for you. Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC of My Ultramarine Sky.

A cliche yet wholesome high school romance! Anything involving childhood friends to lovers immediately has my interest, so I’m not surprised to have liked this. Ren and Kai were so considerate of each other in a way only best friends are; any miscommunication between them was short lived, and their brief confession + romance was really sweet. For a one shot, this was pretty good!

My Ultramarine Sky is a standard and solid BL manga. There's nothing very surprising in this story of two school friends developing feelings for each other. It was sweet regardless, and I loved the grumpy x sunshine vibes of the MCs and the way longing and unrequited love was portrayed. There were also lots of fun side characters and a few laugh-out-loud moments. I’d recommend this manga for a quick one-shot to spend a few hours with.

Thank you to Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for an early copy of this title. All thoughts are my own.

Kai and Ren have been in the same class since middle school. On their senior year of high school, they were separated into different classrooms. Both friends have never been apart before so Kai fears that they'll slowly drift away from each other.

Kai and Ren have different personalities but somehow they always stayed together. Kai could make friends with anyone while Ren is more introverted. They would occasionally do their go-to thing in front of their two friends and it's great content yay!!

Their confession scenes were amazing and even though it took a long time, I'm glad Ren finally realized his feelings for Kai. Overall, It's a heart warming story between two childhood friends accepting their feelings for one another.

"You're the one who's made my teenage years worthwhile, My Ultramarine Sky."

I'd recommend this book for anyone who's interested in this genre of romance. This is a pretty good starting point for new readers since the plot isn't too difficult to understand. Everyone should read a manga like this once in their life :0

Thank you to Kodansha Comics for the e-ARC!

Honestly, while the friends to lovers storyline was cute, the main character comes off extremely creepy to his best friend before they are together, before they even realize they have reciprocal feelings, and it ruined the whole manga for me.

a very avarage bl manga that presents a very been there done that dynamic. newcomers to the genre might find it to be a sweeter read than i did.

Thank you so much for the ARC!!!

This is technically the first manga I've actually cracked open to read, and it did not disappoint! This gave strong heartstopper vibes and i really enjoyed it. I wish it was a lil longer though, and maybe had some more 'time' information throughout (it was a lil hard to differentiate the memories/younger them when in flashbacks vs. them now– kinda was jarring when it all of a sudden would be them when they were younger randomly in the middle of them talking in the future lol if this makes sense)

However i thought this was a light cute lil read and was a graphic novel/manga, which i don't read often!! I may need to pick up a few more though :D.

I was hoping for a sweet friends-to-lovers romance, and My Ultramarine Sky delivered. The plot was a bit simplistic, but the characters were developed well for being a one-shot, and I enjoyed how wholesome it was.

This was a cute, fluffy romance that I had a really fun time with!

Sometimes, a sweet one-shot is the perfect book for a quick and easy read and this was definitely that. I liked the characters and the plot, and while there was not a whole lot of a story, I think there was still a really good narrative!

Overall, this was super cute!

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC!

(Note: In Japan, students stay together in one class while the teachers move classrooms to teach; students also test into high schools and university, rather than attending location-based institutions. Also, middle school in Japan usually includes grades 7-9, high school includes grades 10-12.) Kai and Ren have been in the same class since middle school. Now in high school, Kai and Ren are separated into different classes for the first time. They still hang out with their established friend group when they can, but when Ren accidentally discovers that Kai likes him romantically, they both must ponder the direction of their relationship.

This was a solid story, well-paced and well-developed given its one-shot parameters. They story was simple and straightforward, with both boys reflecting on both their own feelings and their feelings for each other. There was ample room for character development, and the expressive art style further highlighted their emotions and introspection. Ren and Kai's friends, while side characters, also had their time to shine, both as accepting(?) observers and oblivious comedic relief. The casual BL teasing and societal heteronormativity are also addressed, interestingly, in a way that both acknowledges the negative effects but also leaves the reader wondering if Kai and Ren's friends know more than they let on from the start.

Though the title metaphor was a bit of a stretch, the bonus chapter (added for the tankobon volume) is a nice epilogue to a wholesome and satisfying ending. This is a good read for fans of My Love Mix-Up! by Wataru Hinekure/Aruko and Sasaki and Miyano by Shō Harusono; readers who prefer lighter shounen-ai to the more explicit yaoi genre will likely appreciate this book.

As always, the translation notes at the end of the book are fun and helpful cultural notes. I always enjoy reading them!

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the digital ARC! My Ultramarine Sky is a BL/Shounen Ai manga from Nagisa Furuya (My Summer of You) and follows the story of friends Kai and Ren. Kai and Ren have been classmates and friends since the start of middleschool/junior high. Now in their final year of highschool, they've been placed into separate classes, is this the start of them drifting apart, or could their feelings toward one another be more than friendship. My Ultramarine Sky is a gentle romance and a quick read that explores both characters thoughts and motivations and portrays their evolving relationship with heart-wrenching authenticity.

My Ultramarine Sky was so damn cute. There wasn't a ton of plot, but the focus on the characters and their struggle to adjust to being in different classes for the first time was perfectly paced. It was a snapshot of their lives at this crucial coming-of-age moment where they came to terms with their feelings for each other. I truly got the sense that these boys had been best friends forever, and I appreciated how much their connection came across in the writing and art. They were adorable and unsure about making their romantic feelings known, even though it seemed their other friends already knew they were a package deal. While this wasn't a steamy story (thankfully, since the characters were still minors), it did have a strong focus on the emotions of the boys and the impact of their relationship, and its potential loss, on each other's lives and well-being. If you are looking for a wonderful friends to boyfriends BL story, I definitely recommend picking this one up. Therefore, I give My Ultramarine Sky a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
