Friends-to-lovers manga is my jam! Really like the relationship dynamic between our best friends in this story. Kai & Ren's friendship morphing into something more felt so genuine and sweet to read. I appreciated how natural their relationship bloomed into something more, too. Never felt forced or rushed. You can tell the two best friends treasure each other and the longing between them when they're separated just made for such a gentle romance. Additionally, I was so happy that the mangaka chose to include both MC's POVs (Kai's POV on the front end and Ren's at the back end of the manga). Really wrapped things up well. Overall, I enjoyed this soft, friends-to-lovers BL story a lot.
A short and sweet love story with some adorable interactions between the characters as they navigate their feelings.
I enjoyed it, but the pacing felt a bit confusing at times
This was so sweet and full of emotions! I loved the dynamic between the main characters and how their different personalities were portrayed in the manga. I wish we got to see more of them, maybe there'll be a volume 2 some day?
If you've liked Nagisa Furuya's mangas before, I definitely recommend this one, too. And if you're new to this mangaka, I recommend it for people who like the friends to lovers trope! Really well executed.
Kai and Ren have been together (platonically) since middle school. They've always been in the same class, always walked home together and spent most of their time together. But, in their final year of high school, they're no longer in the same class. This creates a distance that Kai didn't think would happen so soon and he's unsure of how to navigate this situation, especially since he's been harbouring a crush on Ren for years now.
To make things worse, Ren isn't sure of his own feelings. Has he always liked Kai as more than a friend? Or, is Kai truly only just a best friend whom he's so comfortable, so close to? While he attempts to find the answers he seeks, misunderstandings brew and this might just be the end of 'Kai and Ren' in any sense.
Fortunately, as the story progresses, Kai and Ren realise that yes, the feelings are reciprocated, making the entire manga sweet with touches of angst. I really liked the dual perspectives as they provided more depth and context, but I think this manga is just too short. It wouldn't been better had the mangaka delved deeper into their friendship, explored more of the emotions and just added more to the story instead of utilising conventional tropes and side characters as plot devices.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy this short and sweet manga (and even teared up a bit here and there).

My Ultramarine Sky is the touching story of two best friends: Kai and Ren. They've been in the same class for years until they're not, and they suddenly have to learn how to be apart. I like that the storu was told from their two perspectives, with flashbacks from when they were younger, because it added depth to their friendship and it was easy to see how they slowly fell for each other.
I also loved the bonus chapter, it was a nice surprise.
I can't wait to read other manga by Nagisa Furuya!
Solid 4 out of 5. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
Very tame when it comes to BL but this was just the fresh and sweet pallet cleanser I needed. A lovely friends to lovers story of two high school boys who don't realize how good they have until they aren't in the same class!
I liked this gentle story of slow blooming feels between two best friends. It's a quiet story, with an emphasis on the thoughts and emotions of the two main characters as they work through their developing feelings. It's interesting to get both the POVs, with the first half from Kai's POV and the second half from Ren's POV. I liked that neither boy has a sexuality freak out but instead they come to the realization that the other is their person, the one they can be their truest self with, and that they don't want to drift apart but instead find a way to stay together. Overall, it's a low angst, soft feels story with a happy ending.
Beautiful manga! I loved the art and I really enjoyed the show burn romance. This story felt to genuinely human and was a very enjoyable read. I felt like the central characters had real dimension to them. And the banter between the four boys was so amusing to read. I definitely recommend this manga. Such a sweet story!
Thank you to NetGalley and KODANSHA publishing for the digital copy!
It was easygoing, a little sad, but also cute!
This is a story that follows two friends who realizes that their feelings is deeper than friendship. There were a few angsty moments and I do love that in a romance, because it brings more emotional impact.
Since this was a quick read, there wasn't much of chance to dive into deeply such as their past or how they came to love each other. However, it's fine as it is!

Kai and Ren have been inseparable since the beginnings of middle school. Somehow (maybe fate), they were always in the same class together. Entering their third year of high school, suddenly they are thrusted in another direction as the two end up in separate classes. Growing up together, the two have always managed to spend every moment together. Kai eventually developed deeper feelings for Ren along the way. Now that the two are forced to spend time separated, their relationship and feelings are tested when Kai confesses to Ren on accident. Can the two work out their differences, or will their different personalities be the end of their years together?
This is a beautifully well done story- comparing a close relationship of childhood friends to lovers to the clearness of a blue sky. I loved the art, the characters, and the storyline. 5/5 stars, everyone who likes a quick feel good story needs to read.
This is a very cute boy love my girl that I would highly recommend. I think it’s fun. It’s flirty at something that is easy to read and also it’s really cute. It’s definitely more of a slice of life. Mangerton is romance is definitely young and Keith towards the younger audience, but if this is something that you enjoy, I would highly recommend reading this as it was fun. It was whimsical and it was just generally great.
This was a manga following Kai and Ren with a friends-to-lovers trope. I really loved that we get both perspectives in this book and the journey of self-discovery. The only thing I would’ve loved would have been an addition of a backstory for these characters.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with access to read this book!
This book was torture!!!!!!!
Like when you see two friends that clearly love each other and they don't even realize it. The way I screamed!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for the e-book copy!
My Ultramarine Sky follows two friends who have been in the same class since middle school. Their last year of high school, they get separated and it seems their friendship is starting to slip away from them. The premise of this volume sounds good but I found it to be alright. It wasn't bad just a bit predictable and I felt the one male lead was just too dependent on the other. It didn't feel like romance but rather miscommunication and codependency. I also wish there was some time spent on the side characters because they seemed interesting.
4 / 5 Stars
This was a very cute, quick read.
Some Tropes you'll find in here:
- Lots of fluff
- A Hint of Hurt/Comfort
- Lots of (Mutual) Pining
- Not-Actually-Unrequited-Love
- Friends-To-Lovers
It's not super deep or mindblowing but its good for what it is. Would I have loved more backstory and an inside into moments that brought them together and that deepend their bond? Yeah, but this is a oneshot kind of manga with only so many pages, so I guess it's fine. There’s always hope for a sequel..., right? ;D
Final Thoughts:
Cute & fluffy.
Ahhhhhh this was so cute! The artwork was beautiful, and the storyline was amazing!!
I’m literally obsessed and can’t wait to get my hand on a physical copy
Oh my poor little heart - first the ache, then the sweetness! I loved it! Great story and amazing art. Just top. I'm also a fan of the other books from this author.
3stars⚝
Kai and Ren have been in the same class since middle school, but in their final year of high school, they're not in the same class anymore. Kai feels like he and Ren are growing apart. As the story unfolds, they both realize they have feelings for each other. It's such a sweet journey of self discovery! 💕
Having both perspectives in this manga really added depth to the story, especially considering its length. It would have been amazing to have more backstory and delve even deeper into their friendship. I wanted to know more about their journey and the moments that brought them together. . But for what it was, this was a solid cute read. I couldn't help but get all excited and giddy towards the end!
My favorite scene would be where one of them confesses their feelings while the other is sleeping🤭
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review!
Very pretty art style and cute characters, but there wasn’t much to the story.
It lacks a bit of depth to really captivate me.
As is, it was very surface-level.
Like usual, it was the cover of My Ultramarine Sky that grasped my attention at first. But then, as the story unfolded between best friends Ren Mizushiro and Kai Makihara, I realized just how special this story was.
The artistry was gorgeous and the love story between friends who were separated in school for the first time, thus causing them to reevaluate their feelings was beautiful.

Now for the boys: as Kai once joked, Ren is “like a skittish cat” but he chose to go along with Kai to high school. This ultimately caused Kai to start having feelings. The boys even played around with BL scenes to have fun with their other friends. But once they are separated, things start getting awkward as both boys begin to feel lost and alone.
My only real gripe about the story is I wanted MORE at the end. But, it’s a HEA and it’s adorable so I’m not gonna complain too much. So glad I grabbed this one!
