I am never gonna look away from a friends to lovers trope. I think it’s a sweet trope that can be done in a lot of ways. My Ultramarine Sky went more for the classic route but it was still enjoyable.
Kai and Ren are the typical gooses you just want to shake a bit so they’ll actually communicate. I do love miscommunication and it didn’t feel drawn out in this volume. Also, angst did appear for a second and I also do love a good angst moment.
My only problem was the dialogue fell flat at some moments and I didn’t feel fully drawn in like I have with other friends to lovers storyline. Overall, it was a sweet manga and the world can never have too many cute mangas.
Two highschool childhood friends. One has a crush and one doesn't realize his feelings yet. Time drifts them apart a bit and the mc accidentally confesses his feelings. Will the ml accept his feelings or...

It was a short and sweet story, loved the art and the chemistry between the two protagonists! I would like a bit more of information about their friendship and made them fall in love with each other, however, this is fun nonetheless.
Such a sweet and tender friends to lovers story. I really enjoyed getting to see snippets from the entire duration of their friendship and seeing both characters realize their feelings. My only wish is that we got to see more of their relationship once it turned romantic, though I was thankful for the epilogue at least. I would have loved a snippet from the future that answers whether they go to college together like they were stressing over and how their relationship has grown!
Ren and Kai are best friends throughout highschool. At some point, Kai began messing with Ren by starting to flirt and do “BL stuff” to Ren in front of their other friends. Only when they are finally separated does Kai begin to realize that perhaps he had been doing and saying those things to Ren because he might have feelings for the other boy…
This story was soft and sweet and I really enjoyed that we got to see both sides with both boys coming to terms with their feelings and what they wanted from each other. Kai is fun and playboy-like but he has serious feelings deep down, and Ren has a tough exterior but inside there is a sweet, softness in him that I love to see. They worked so perfectly together and together they made for a really enjoyable story.
I also enjoyed the art, especially the Roy Mustang vibes that Ren gave us - I always love to see it and it will never have a complaint from me.
I’d definitely read even more stories from these two.
*I received an eARC from Kodansha Comics & NetGalley. All opinions are my own*
I love this book so much! I am still screaming even after reading it because Kai and Ren are just TOO CUTE!!! Their love story is adorable and so youthful .//////. I can't say much more than that! I love it so much that I will reread it repeatedly.
Thank you, NetGalley and Kodansha for providing me with this e-ARC!
Here's an excerpt from my detailed review that'll be out next Friday! I will update the link then. Thanks a lot to Kodansha and NetGalley for the opportunity as always ~
"The strength of My Ultramarine Sky comes from its way of framing certain events and feelings. To give you a bit of a context; Number Call was released in 2013 and My Ultramarine Sky's serialization started in 2014 so this volume is almost 10 years old. You'd expect the title to show its age, and considering the variety in the genre or your tastes it might seem a tad simplistic, but it's just a testament that Furuya Nagisa's works are timeless.
These titles are as slice-of-life as they can get, and similar discussions that happen around the genre, happen regarding Furuya's works as well. It's the good old case of "Nothing happens in this anime!" versus "That's literally the point!" Their works do not venture beyond the walls like the Survey Corps or walk the unfamiliar path, which I agree with. However, I think the charm of these titles, including My Ultramarine Sky, is their simple, everyday settings with everyday, uncomplicated emotional ups and downs. And how they can still transform into heart-throbbing stories at the hand of a seasoned, talented artist."
My heart is so full! My Ultramarine Sky is an adorable tale of two boys that are spending their final year of high school in seperate classes after being in the same class since middle school. It’s a slice of life, BL story about discovering your identity and questioning the depth of friendships, and is so beautifully paced.
I loved this manga and would happily read many more volumes if Nagisa Furuya ever chooses to share more of their story. Huge thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for a copy of the Arc!
I used to read loads of bl stories and mangas, so I will say that I’m rather familiar with some of the common plots that take place in bl stories.
Honestly speaking, I wished that this story was published in multiple volumes instead of just one so that we can see more development between Ren and Kai. I think this caused the climax of the story to not be as memorable as other bl or romance stories I had previously read. If we had seen more development or romantic interactions between them, I feel that we can get more angst and the climax would be more intense. I was kind of let down at the climax.
Everything was rapidly resolved at the end and we didn’t get much development after the confession which made the whole build up earlier on seemed pretty redundant. I really wished to see my drama and tension between both of the characters which would immensely make the story more memorable and help it stand out amongst other high school bl stories.
Overall speaking, I find the art style pretty simplistic. It doesn't really stand out particularly but I kind of appreciate how the author adapted the old school manga style of panelling. I actually wish to see more showing through the art and let the characters adopt more of those micro-expression instead of just telling it through the captions. Otherwise, the art felt kind of stale. Also, I really wish to see the author experimenting more on the background and scenery to make the story seem more vibrant.
Overall, this was a pretty neutral read and a story that I easily managed to read in one-sitting. Thank you once again for the free ARC!
I think we needed more of Ren outside the little foursome, but I also liked the casual intimacy that Kai and Ren had even when it was purely platonic. The main pair, as well as the two side characters who round out the ensemble, were complete enough to feel like real people - even just from offhand comments and the way they interact with each other.
But there’s also not much to it. It’s a simple high school friends to lovers story
Thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha Comics, and Nagisa Furuya for the opportunity to read this manga in exchange for an honest review.
This is a BL manga featuring two boys who have been friends since middle school, and by happenstance, have always ended up with the same homeroom class. Now in their third year of high school, they are in different classes. They don't think they will mind, but then they do, realizing their friendship goes deeper than they expect.
A nice one-shot BL manga for a high school audience. Good art, average story, enjoyable read.
I loved the book immensely.
The characters have a strong and heartwarming friendship that leaves us smiling.
The story develops into a super sweet romance, in which one of them already likes their friend, and suffers from one-sided love. We suffer with them when they start to distance themselves. Meanwhile, the friend begins to become more aware of the friendship between the two and his feelings begin to change.
The secondary characters were amazing, and helped a lot to develop the story.
The designs are fantastic, and the panels are very well thought out. I loved the author's work and want to read more from her.
And the book is just one volume, so there are no excuses not to pick up this super romantic manga.
Really enjoyed this one!
It was very sweet, tame, and just…nice.
The premise is two friends - Kai and Ren - have been in the same class since they became friends in their first year of middle school. But they got assigned to different classes in their final year of high school and the distance makes them both miss each other and Kai - who has had a crush on Ren for a long time sees him asleep in a classroom and confesses thinking he didn’t hear.
Or did he???
I really enjoyed it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A beautiful story of young love and friendships, My Ultramarine Sky was a very enjoyable manga read and I loved the illustration style throughout. I would love to read more with these characters and would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a nice, heartwarming read!
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for this advanced copy.
A sweet tender love story. I loved how this manga had 2 POV, so we could understand the 2 main characters better. LOVE IT.
4.5 stars.
This was such a cute manga! I love an unrequited love story that evolves into the other having an, “Oh,” moment.
These two boys have been in each other’s class since middle school until their last year of high school. They both feel a little lost without the other and they unwillingly begin to drift apart.
I laughed. I cried. I swooned!
Only thing I wish was that it was longer!
This manga was so sweet my teeth hurt.
“My Ultramarine Sky” follows a typical high school romance manga format. Two friends, one secretly has feelings for the other. While basic in plot. It was still absolutely adorable. I really enjoyed hearing the description about how much they liked each other. It was very descriptive and well written. Overall this was so sweet and the art was good.
3.5 stars rounded down.
This was a super cute, slow burn story. I loved the artwork and the story was fairly well written. The main reason I gave it 3.5 stars was because nothing much happened. It was too slow burn and only resolved at the last possible minute. Also, I wanted to enjoy this because I like reading queer stories but I always forget that BL stories are different. To me, they feel like they're written for straight girls, and not the queer community at all. I'm sure there's still a lot of queer people out there who would enjoy this, it just was not for me.
I'm def. in a funky mood, but I don't think it affected my rating on this one too much. 🤣 I liked the premise, and the introspection of the narration for both guys, but I feel like it was missing that oomph to make this a memorable angsty high school romance pining story. I didn't really find them pretend acting the BL scenes to be that charming...😂 But mostly, I didn't like how both guys briefly dated girls to avoid their feelings for each other, even if they acknowledged it was wrong and I get that was supposed to kind of be a bi-awakening for one of them. 💀 The ending was pretty cute though, and I did like the confession scene.
The art overall was okay, but kind of lacked a bit of personality imo, but at least it's still a quick read of a oneshot at least and hits a bit on the slice of life vibes.
My Ultramarine Sky is a beautiful story of two boys who are best friends who end up having feelings for each other. This story is great for teen angst and slice of life. Definitely recommend for those interested in BL but not yet ready for the deep end. Can't wait to see more from this author!
