This was an angsty slow burn that was full of tension, emotions and banter.
Regina and Ellie are the perfect example of grumpy/sunshine. Ellie is full of sunshine, she is sweet, caring and doesn’t hide her emotions. While Regina keeps to herself, doesn’t want to mix work and home life.
Their dates are full of awkward moments, being flustered, banter, & obvious attraction. Having to do the dates for the auction brings Regina out of her shell slowly & we see why she’s so closed off.
The tension and chemistry between them was great.
There was passion, some spice and forgiveness and healing.
The narration was perfect for the story.
Very cute, very satisfying. I love a book where you can see how the characters' interactions create the connections between them and this one delivered on that front. The fact that the auction came with a set number of dates that needed to be photographed for publicity's sake helped Ellie and Regina get to know each other better.
Jae does something that Sapphic romance authors excel at: mentioning characters from previous books to whet your appetite for the author's back catalog. Rest assured I will be checking out both Perfect Rhythm and Not the Marrying Kind!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review of Bachelorette Number 12. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter and play between the two main characters. I also enjoyed the setting in the hospital and charity auction as I havent read any other queer books with this setting!
An interesting, though slightly lengthy, enemies-to-lovers story, this novel captivates with the tension between Dr. Regina Novak and ER nurse Ellie Fisher. Despite its extended length, the plot kept me engaged throughout. The narration was well-executed and added depth to the overall experience, enhancing the emotional intensity between the characters. A compelling read for fans of slow-burn romance with well-developed character dynamics. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
Thank you to netgalley and Tantor Audio for access to this book in exchange for my honest opinion. This was such a cute sapphic romance and I enjoyed getting to know the characters and seeing their journey throughout the story.
My first book from this author, and it definitely won’t be the last! I loved the audiobook narrator, which made this even better. I love reading about women in STEM, so naturally this was a hit. Witty banter and a fun premise. Looking forward to exploring more from Jae!
I really liked this audiobook. It was my first ever, so I was skeptical that I wouldn't like them, but the narrator was great and the book was good too.
This was a sweet, fun, sapphic romance that I’d recommend to anyone looking for something light and entertaining. It’s set in the medical field, with both MCs working at the same hospital. Ellie, an eternally sunshine-y ER nurse and Regina, a grumpy neurologist cross paths when the former accidentally bids on the latter in a charity singles auction.
Cute and witty, playful and banter. This was an adorable enemies to lovers in the workplace.
The character development of Dr. Regina Novak is so great, seeing her grow to understand herself better with a little help from the ER nurse Ellie Fisher. Ellie has this air about her of enthusiasm and a love for life. Her best friend is her sister who is her roommate and a Paramedic who is tied in Ellie's work life too.
From the start this story had me smiling, from a great big fly she swatted away that resulted in a bid on Bachelorette Number Twelve, to the very end. This has been the best romance I have read in a while!
Not to mention that the enthusiasm in Lori Prince's voice and her inflections in tone that made the whole story come to life. This was a very well narrated audiobook!
I think my biggest problem with this book is that it's too long. It was somehow only 330 some pages but the audiobook was almost 13 hours. I listened to maybe 75% of it at 2x speed and then once they started having sex I bumped it up to 2.5 x. It's just too long. I really like the connection between the characters and I loved the concept even though it was pretty unrealistic. If you're doing a bachelor auction there's no way you're going to have to fulfill so many different dates. Anyway my only other small comment is that the doctor in the book makes a statement about how she doesn't wear a doctor's coat because she thinks it gets in the way But she doesn't like that people automatically assume she's a nurse because she's a woman but on the cover they show her wearing a white coat. I just wish that covers match the actual character descriptions please and thank you.
A Classic Jae book, I genuinely enjoyed. A great slow burn, enemies-to-lovers story without a third act break up.
I liked the idea of the auction and the little dates they had.
For the narration, I love Lori Prince, so it was great to listen to and enjoyable.
I really enjoyed the story and narrations. Lori Prince did an amazing job narrating Bachelorette Number 12. I don't read many spicy LBGT stories but I enjoyed it.
I would read more by Jae and listen to other books narrated by Lori Prince.
This was a super cute sapphic romance about a surgeon and a nurse who essentially hate each other until an accident at their hospitals charity auction leads to them being contractually required to go on a series of dates. Regina is the cranky surgeon with a traumatic past and Ellie is a glass half full hopeless romantic who is NOT a fan of Regina’s cold exterior but quickly becomes interested in finding out what lies under the surface. This book was written really well and sucked me in from the beginning but towards halfway though I found myself feeling really disinterested. I’m not sure if that was the book itself or just me not being in the mood for this type of book at the moment but I did struggle to finish. I loved all of the representation in this book and I’m always a sucker for enemies to lovers (and with LESBIANS?? Even better) but for some reason something about it just fell a little flat for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Tantor Audio for sending me a copy of this audiobook! All opinions are my own!
This was a very fun ride from the first page, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! Both Ellie and Regina are so relatable in such different ways, and I think I saw myself in both of them, especially as someone in the medical field who can easily see both of their outlooks on it. I love the way that the two of them come together and slowly learn to trust one another, it made everything feel so much more authentic than romances often do. They ended up being each other's biggest cheerleaders, and I so appreciate that coming from a field that can be very cutthroat. Their banter and ease with one another was so refreshing, and I found myself smiling more often than not!
My only complaint is that if you're going to write a book set in the medical field, you need to be willing to take the time to google simple medical terms and such. (It's palpating, not palpitating) (Residents *are* doctors, I would know, I am one...) If you can't take 30 seconds to find that out, maybe don't write in a field you don't know.
"Bachelorette Number 12" by Jae explores the dynamics of an enemies-to-lovers lesbian romance in the unique setting of a singles auction. The story revolves around Ellie Fisher, a warmhearted ER nurse, and Regina Novak, a prickly attending physician. The initial dislike between them evolves when Ellie accidentally wins a date with Regina at the auction, leading to a reluctant agreement to go through with the dates.
I rated "Bachelorette Number 12" 2 stars due to some shortcomings. The enemies-to-lovers trope, while popular, is executed here in a somewhat formulaic manner. The characters, particularly Regina, may feel clichéd in their initial disdain and eventual thawing of animosity. The plot relies on familiar elements, and the narrative lacks the depth and complexity that could elevate the story beyond standard romance fare.
Despite these drawbacks, the novel offers moments of humor and chemistry between the characters. It may appeal to readers seeking a straightforward enemies-to-lovers romance with a light and entertaining tone. However, for those desiring more originality and depth in character development, "Bachelorette Number 12" may fall short.
Jae's stories have the feel of catching up with an old friend. They're reliable, entertaining, and a good way to spend the afternoon. No notes, this was what i've come to expect with Jae's contemporaries, and I had an enjoyable time. Also, really loved the slow burn romance throughout this. Thanks again!
I was lucky to get a ARC of the audiobook of Bachelorette Number 12. This is the first book I have read by Jae, and definitely won’t be the last. I absolutely loved it. The characters were lovable, their chemistry felt real, and I was so happy that there’s no 3rd act breakup (I feel like I’ve read a lot of those lately). A very sweet romance. 5 stars!
The story of Regina and Ellie is absolutely adorable. Grumpy sunshine sapphic romance. But my very favorite part is the confirmation and adoration of Ellie as a nurse, and the distinction that nurse offer skills and kindness now offered or possessed by others.
Bachelorette Number Twelve is a slow-burn sapphic romance that centres around a Valentine's Day auction that leads to two very different co-workers going on three dates.
As Ellie and Regina's journey unfolds, their interactions often circle back to a pattern of attraction acknowledged with qualifiers, such as remarks on each other's attractiveness that, while affirming their mutual interest, become tediously repetitive. Regina's hot-and-cold demeanor, marked by dismissive comments and a seeming disregard for Ellie's feelings, casts a shadow over their budding relationship. Despite Regina's efforts to amend her harsh words, the cycle of hurtful remarks followed by apologies left me frustrated by their dynamic. This, coupled with Ellie's persistent but often disregarded attempts at friendship, paints a portrait of a relationship fraught with imbalance and miscommunication. Scenes meant to show growth or understanding, such as Regina's thoughtful gestures or moments of vulnerability, were overshadowed for me by a lingering sense of Ellie's diminishing self-worth in the face of Regina's inconsistency. Due to this, I didn't connect with their romance at all and wasn't particularly fond of either character.
The novel, while capturing the slow and hesitant steps towards intimacy between an icy doctor and a sunny nurse, drags its narrative feet, extending far beyond the initial auction dates into a prolonged dance of two steps forward, one step back. This pacing issue, alongside the underdeveloped secondary storylines and the emergency department's background role, suggests that a more condensed narrative could have sharpened the focus on the evolving relationship without losing the story's heart.
I listened to the audiobook and will admit that at times, I was a bit lost with Lori Prince's narration as her voices for the two main characters would sometimes interlace.
Bachelorette Number Twelve weaves a narrative that's quintessentially Jae—a cute romance featuring mild angst. It did leave me wanting more though - more depth, more drama, and more of an edit.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Tandor Audio for a copy of this audiobook. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
