Amy Allen has crafted a quaint urban supernatural setting for this mystery. A college town is the backdrop to a grizzly murdered coed. Harper Zeale, a supernatural threat hunter, is sent on a mission to find the killer and dispatch them if necessary. She finds herself aligned with an unlikely trio of students to help her find the killer.
A Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing will definitely have an appeal to younger adults. The characters and their dialogue all speak to that age grouping.
I enjoyed the novel due to the mystery portion being done well. Add in the group of supernatural eclectic characters and this would make a perfect summer read.
I received an advance review copy from Bella Books through NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity
Very detailed and engaging story.
Ah there is so much about this book that I enjoyed!! To start with I loved Harper, her little self talks throughout the entire story, the struggle she felt as an outsider and had to deal with was written very well and was moving for me as the reader. Loved the little Buffy shoutout in there- Classic! The whole world building work that Amy Allen has done for this book was magnificently created, I enjoyed all the lore added & it didn't feel overwhelming or info dumpy to me. With the way the ending was set I would love to see a sequel or maybe a series of books, especially since this book was pretty short. It was such a cute little love story too, I loved their banter and was enjoyable to read. The mystery aspect of the novel was pretty quick to solve I thought, but I think maybe I just read/watch too many true crime bits! Overall I enjoyed this short little book, and I hope it is enough of a success for another adventure for Harper and her little gang.
This is a story about Harper who is a hunter of supernatural killers. She works with her parents and lives in a commune with them. She’s assigned to hunt a killer of a college student. Harper goes to the college and finds it to be filled with supernatural students. She befriends a werewolf student Esther. Together they work to find the killer.
This was an ok read for me. I couldn’t relate well to either MC. It was very low level violence, romance or angst. I would classify it as YA but it’s not marketed that way.
ARC received from Net Galley for an honest and voluntary review
Thanks to Bella Books and Netgalley for this copy in exchange for my review.
This was a fun read and I'm interested to see what Allen creates next.
A Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing has a few things going for it besides a clever name and intriguing plot. Because this is a mystery I don’t want to give too much of the story away so I’ll summarize with my lasting impressions.
Amy Allen is a new voice in this genre and one I’ll definitely read again. She creates characters with tons of diverse representation and really shines where it comes to the world building. Once again it’s hard to review a book like this without giving away too much but suffice to say it’s completely immersive storytelling
The romance in this was on the light side and there’s no spice, though admittedly it’s very sweet. This book is perfect if you’re in the mood for an atmospheric urban murder mystery with a sweet little sapphic romance on the side.
This was really hard work. I spent the first half of the book waiting for something to happen. There is no real story just awkward distractions and not very likeable or interesting characters. It doesn't gel or flow and is very much just about one thing which is not my cup of tea. Uncomfortable and uninterested I stopped caring about where it might go and only got to 75% life's too short!
Such an amazing book that can easily get the reader hooked!
Harper is an interesting MC which an interesting life and even more interesting backstory for why she has that life, she is part of a muthic guide who is known for their spilling of blood.
Seeing Harper progress as a person through the story was very interesting and the emotional confliction between her job and who she likes? *french kiss*
All the side characters all had their individual usefullness and Izzy being he badass protective mom friend is such a mood.
If you aren't ready to join the Esther protection squad by the end of the story you probably didn't read till the end.
Also the repitition of ''Harper you pridictable bitch'' will probably stay with me for long time
The mystery of who killed Autumn will be a mystery until you get to it!
5 stars!
Rep: Trans MC, gay christian, queer background characters
a fun read and also very descriptive. If you're a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, this is one is for you. 3.5 stars
Thank you, Bella Books, and NetGalley.

harper zeale is a hunter of the supernatural and she has been sent to Malcolm-Baptiste College to find a killer a possible were wolf
after staking out the grounds her job is nearly over when she spots something and follows the girl further into the woods.... as the girl changes into a werewolf harper is about to kill her but something is very off...
and so begins the journey ...
have to say this was my first book by this author, but i did struggle... i found it to descriptive and i was jumping over parts especially the inner voice dialogues.... luckily the fighting scene kept me glued and the magic
Very good read if you like the mythic mixed with real world type genre. I found the characters well developed and one of the MCs, Harper, was written with depth to really see her as a huntress of supernatural beings. There are many supporting characters that contribute to a good story line, some I could even see having their own stories written some day.
This my first time reading a publication from Ms. Allen's, she is new to me, and this book holds so many nice twists and turns it kept me reading cover to cover in one sitting-I look forward to other publications from this author.
Fan of DnD? Love romance set in an urban area? Then this is the book for you. Despite being new on the scene, Amy Allen is able to draw the reader into her book through vivid descriptions of the world built.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC!
This storyline was giving me Medieval meets Dungeons and Dragons in an Urban setting type feel. It was a fun read and the characters were full of representation in every sense of the word. The world building was phenomenal in that I could picture everything described as if I were watching a movie. There was buildup before the main showdown and it was quite explosive. The focus was actually on the plot and not romance, the friendship groups were exceptionally well portrayed and I had fun with them. All in all this is the first I’ve read of this author and I enjoyed it.
Urban fantasy with very diverse representation
(3.5 rounded up to 4) Amy Allen is a new voice. Her urban fantasy A Sheep in Wolf‘s Clothing has good world building with some interesting takes on the supernatural. Guild hunter Harper has turned 21 and works a murder case. She finds a very mixed and diverse crew to help her solve a murder. In fact this novel excels at very diverse representation: trans, interracial couple, polyamory, lesbian, gay - to name only some.
There were some story twists which did not convince me as much, e.g. a hunter who tries to remain secret and sports a big, very visible tatoo of her guild, or making rushed decisions which bode not well for a life beyond 21.
If you are looking for a fresh voice and diverse representation you might want to have a look at this book.
