I love food, and I love travel, so I figured this book would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, my expectations for this book were off the mark, and that meant that this ended up not really being a fit for me. This book is a collection of brief articles detailing some history and food culture of 25 different cities around the globe. Amy Grimes accompanies these articles with vibrant illustrations, almost always of scenery and people and every once in a while of some sort of vague food item. The illustrations are wonderful (if perhaps lacking in food), and the information about each region was interesting if somewhat over-written (I felt the prose bordered on purple at times). What this book does not have: restaurant recommendations, photos, or in-depth descriptions of dishes. I also found the location choices a little curious, but obviously if you're only highlighting 25 cities, you're going to have to pick and choose. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, White Lion Publishing for a digital review copy.

I really enjoyed discovering so much cultural items in this book. It really brought to life all of these foods I’d love to try and experience immediately. I loved it! Everything was so lush and descriptive as well.

This book was such a wonderful find for me. For me, who never gets past my driveway, this book was an escape and an adventure. With beautiful illustrations we go in a journey learning about new places and mouthwatering foods. I love the detail in this book and the story it created for me to discover places and things I’ll only dream of. I highly recommend this one.

Gorgeous illustrations and short summaries of significant cuisine/dishes globally by city and county.
Includes locations that may not be on the main travel path but have a historical impact on cuisine locally and across the country and descriptions of the historical impacts of the dishes that would make them foodie places locally or internationally.

If you love travel, and food and would like to know more about where to eat and what specialty you can get there then this book should be one of those for you to read. I found its greatest charm to be the fact that she does not share photos of the food-to me this leaves you with the anticipation of what you may get.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

As a foodie and a traveller I thought this book would be right down my street. All I can really say is it is bland and uninspiring. I did what I always do with travel books, looked up places I know. Nothing in this book would really inspire me to go to those places. The pictures were nice, but a bit of variety with different artists might have enlivened the book a bit.

I am so impressed with the wide-ranging locations of the foodie places that are included in this book. Visit 25 spots; go everywhere from Europe to the Middle East to North America to Asia. I want to pack my suitcase and go to some of these locations.

Everyone will find favorites here. I was drawn to places like Osaka, Oostduinkerke (West Flanders, Belgium), Montreal and Melbourne.

This title has inviting text; readers will get a genuine sense of each location. In addition, the book has beautiful illustrations.

Know a world traveler? Need to get them a gift? You will not need to look any further for a good one.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title

I wasn’t expecting a broad overview of regional food, but that is what this is. The author isn’t going to tell you where in the city to find these dishes. What they will tell you is what city it is in, the history of that city/region, and the most popular dish to try in that city. You will have to find the actual restaurant yourself.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Foodie Places by Sarah Baxter is so interesting! This book delves into foods from around the globe, like couscous and paella. Each chapter is on a different food item, some you may have never even heard of before. This was a book that was great to pick up when I had a little time, but didn't want to get into a novel. I recommend this for foodies!

I really enjoyed this lovely book. The illustrations are beautiful - I would genuinely frame some for my wall - and I appreciated the variety of “foodie places” features; not just the usual suspects (although they are here too and I’m glad because I never tire of reading about Venice), but also Nuremberg, Oostduinkerke, Tusheti and more.

Thank you for the advance reader copy of this book. My mouth was drooling reading this book. I had to alternate between making a list of food I must try in this life and face palming for all the places I had been and food I didn’t try when I was there. What a beautiful and well done book! I learned so much and am so intrigued by food all over the world like octopus donuts. I would have loved real photos mixed into with the beautiful watercolors.

Sadly, this one was just not for me. Extremely informative and well-written but I wanted to hear examples of where to go and names of places and certain cuisines and dishes to look out for. If you are interested in learning more about the cultural aspects of each suggested place then this will be a useful read. Just not quite what I was expecting.

Beautifully illustrated, fun, and informative; definitely would recommend it in the hard cover format versus digital because of that.

Thanks kindly to NetGalley and White Lion Publishing for the ARC.

Foodie Places is a welcome addition to the Inspired Traveler's Guides series, and is simply gorgeous.

It delivers a rich and compelling illustrated journey to 25 food destinations across the globe, each accompanied by a written historical and cultural snapshot. Baxter's designs feel so alive and playful, and the language used is reminiscent of a profile piece. It would have been made even better with the inclusion of an anecdote from either the author or someone else for each dish featured for a more personal flair, even if just a few sentences long.

This book can't bring you to all or each person's special favourite foodie destination, but its certainly a decent selection and an interesting primer to learn more.
