This book had a really solid plot. I loved the development between Greg and Faye HOWEVER I wish there was more development of the story after Greg’s memory came back. I almost wish his memory came back sooner in the book and there was more of a struggle to figure himself and his feelings for Faye out. As a Jewish woman I loved the Jewishness of the book, but found a lot of the mystical “Jew-itch” moments were dragged out and too much. The part when Faye visited the rabbi at NYU was my least favorite narrative. I wish there was more romance development and less mystical Judaism in all honesty.
Magical! Beautiful! Funny! Emotional! I couldn’t put this book down. Read it in one day. There’s so much that I loved about this story. The culture, the justice, the love…everything was so good. I need a sequel or two! Faye and Gregolem were adorable! I wish it was real and I could go to the town and engage with these interesting characters. I’d have to go see Faye to craft my own Greg and some beautiful pottery pieces. Overall the story left me feeling inspired and hopeful! Bravo Author!!
The gasp I guspt when Jean Meltzer announced this book was surpassed by the screamt I scrumpt when I saw the NetGalley approval come through. THANK YOU to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
Jean Meltzer is so unapologetically Jewish in her writing and her characters (and in her every day life), and I love her for it. It is so, so refreshing as a Jewish reader; I do believe this is the first JeWITCH rom com I've ever seen so you can imagine how ecstatic I was. I'm not as familiar with divine feminine side of Judaism, so I was excited to not only see Faye and Greg(olem)'s love story unfold, but also learn even more about Judaism's rich history and religious and spiritual practices. It was infused in every page of this book, and I loved it.
Faye is a Jewitch potter who has sworn off men, but when her small town suffers an antisemitic attack by a far right hate group, she (drunkenly) creates a clay golem to protect them. Imagine her shock when the next day she hits a man almost identical to her clay man with her back. When he wakes up he has no memory of who he is, and Faye can't help but wonder -- did she bring a golem to life?
I loved everything about this book. It boldly addresses antisemitism - how Jews move about the world on a daily basis, how they respond in different ways to attacks, the pursuit of a feeling of safety and security in a world that is anything but for Jews. I loved Faye's unapologetic embrace of her spirituality and heritage, and how supportive Greg was through it all. I loved Faye's friends and fellow towns people. I loved that this book was part romance, part suspense and mystery. and part educational on Jews, Judaism, and antisemitism. Also the cover -- I am obsessed!!
I cannot wait to hold this book in my hands in August, and share it with me friends. Even if you're not Jewish, I think you should give this book a chance - you never know what you'll learn!
The story centers around Faye a disabled jewitch , who owns a pottery shop. Suddenly a group of nazis start spreading flyers around town threatening her and her friends.
after drinking too much wine, she creates a list for her dream guy and molds a clay man who she believes turns into a golem.
I typically read thru Jeans books in a day I love that I can typically relate to them due to the disabilites. I love all things supernatural so I thought the two books combined would be a slam dunk but this book was hard for me to get into and just wasn’t what I expected.
While I am not Jewish, I love Jean Meltzer's books because I feel like I learn so much from them and immerse myself into a new culture. This book tackles some difficult topics, like anti-semitism and trauma, but the author handled these heavier topics so well. I loved the meet cute that Faye and Greg so much. This book does not have spice, but it more than makes up for it in its intricate and heartwarming plot that weaves in a beautiful romance. I loved that Faye was basically a "Jewitch" and was into magic and witchcraft, because I thought this was so interesting to read a character who combines the best of both worlds. I really love Jean Meltzer's ability to tell a story and am in awe of this book!
Thank you to NetGalley, Jean Meltzer, and Harlequin for an eARC of this book!
I am not Jewish but I have learned so much from these books. I think this might have been my favorite. Cute, quirky romcom
So very cute and one of the best meet cutes I have read! I am going to go find more from this author and gobble them all! So refreshing and exactly what I needed!
I have never not fell In love with these books I felt really connected to Faye. I am not Jewish but I have learned so much from these books. I think this might have been my favorite. I have preordered a physical copy since I can see my self rereading this multiple times.
I really enjoyed this book. It's the first book I have read by Jean Meltzer. I look forward to reading more by her. I really liked the character Nelly. She has a good heart and was very protective of Faye. I like the ending between Faye and Greg. I'm grateful that netgalley and the publishers let me read this in exchange for an honest review
The plot of Magical Meet Cute revolves around, well, magic. It seems obvious in the title, however nothing in the promotional summary points to the main character practicing Jewish magic. I’m not a fan of magical romance.
I did enjoy a glimpse into the personal impact of anti-semitism that, as a non-Jewish person, I tend to think isn’t prevalent anymore in the U.S. I’m glad to be reminded that there is work still to be done to eradicate hate.
Otherwise I found the writing heavy and a bit clunky. Not being familiar with golems, perhaps Greg needing to be taught everything while also internally having instincts is on-brand, but for me the story dragged.
This book was just not what I was necessarily expecting upon going into it, therefore it wasn’t my favorite (it was okay for me). With that being said, I would be open to trying a different title by this author, as I loved the writing style!
4.5 stars for a fantastic, magical, and thought-provoking book. I read a different Jean Meltzer book, Kissing Kosher, earlier this year, and I was blown away by the author's ability to infuse complex and important messages into a heartwarming love story.
Magical Meet Cute, a story about a Jewish ceramicist who may or may not have created her ideal man as a golem, did all of that and more. Not only did this story tackle some difficult issues like trauma and anti-semitism, but it was also hilarious, romantic, and hit me with some big ol' twists that I didn't see coming.
I think that the messages in this book are so important for our time. Though I am not Jewish, I felt such empathy and pain for the hatred that so many of my Jewish neighbors deal with. Jean Melter did such a beautiful job writing this part of the story. It is a message that needs to be shared again and again.
Though there are some heavy plot points in the story, overall, it is filled with hope, love, and a little bit of Jewitch magic.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and Jean Meltzer for the e-ARC!
Cute, quirky romcom that was insightful about the generational struggles of the Jewish people. Highly recommend.
I really enjoyed The Matzah Ball, so I was so excited to read Magical Meet Cute - and I was not disappointed! I loved the elements of magical realism and the balance between seriousness and light hearted romcom was perfect. I loved the storyline of this meet cute, the characters, and I truly think the timing of this book could not be more perfect.
Super engaging and relatable! I really enjoyed the characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!
This read was really unexpected… I’m so glad I got to take a peek early!!
This book had so many elements that I love. Found family, quirky characters, humor, romance, an MMC that is gentle in his masculinity, magic…. It was just fun and light and charming in those aspects. The characters were easy to love and their life in Woodstock was one that I fell into quickly.
What I wasn’t expecting was the intrigue of a mystery and really moving details about experiences with Judaism, anti-Semitism, hate speech, and White Supremacy. It was such a delicate exploration of parts of Jewish culture that I was not familiar with- I was so interested and wanted to know more. It felt like learning but was so organically woven into the story. The mystery element tied to those more emotional, cultural pieces but was also just intriguing because it was two mysteries coming together- one magic and one in the “real world.”
This book didn’t have spice, if that’s what you’re looking for in a romcom, but the relationship between Faye and Greg was light and charming… I was so thankful for an HEA! They deserved it!!
Read this, enjoy it, fall into the mysticism!!
Also, I want to be Nelly when I grow up. That is all.
I am a big fan of Jean Meltzer book and although I liked this book it wasn’t one of my favorites that she has written.
Faye Kaplan, a ceramicist, believes she conjured up a golem when she meets Greg. The author touched upon some touch subjects in reference to being Jewish, specifically antisemitism, however at times the plot seemed ridiculous.
Thank you to Jean Meltzer, MIRA, and NetGalley for the ARC for my honest opinion. I look forward to Jean Meltzer’s next book!
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were very complex and the setting was gorgeous. I loved the little details, to me they really make the story. I would definitely recommend!
This was just what I needed. I love the banter and can’t wait to read more from the author. Faye and Greg were perfect. I also loved the magical aspects. So well done
Magical Meet Cute is another winner from Jean Meltzer! Not only is this a fun romcom that you can get lost in for hours, but it's a book with a lot of heart and insight. I highly recommend this and the authors other novels.
