I am a sucker for detective trope books I will admit to that, half of my books are about female detectives what can I say😂 enjoyed this book an hoped others had a slightly similar experience to it.

I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. This is the second book in the series featuring Detective Jack Kent, having thoroughly enjoyed the first book I was looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed. It was a fabulous book with a great story and believable characters, I can't wait for the next one.

A young girl slips away from her home where she is kept almost a prisoner by her narcissistic mother. Hours later she is found dead and DI Jacqueline (Jack) Kent is called in to investigate the unexplained death.
Snippets of clues and red herrings are cleverly given in this dark mystery. There were parts of this book that I did not care for, especially dealing with Jack’s personal love interests, but I also realize that it is so the reader can better understand Jack’s character. Overall this was a good book and I thank Netgalley and Storm Publishing the opportunity to read an early copy. These comments and review are my honest opinion.

Some really strong themes running through this book but they are sensitively handled. A young girl, sheltered from normal life and with a seemingly debilitating range of medical conditions is fiercely protected by her parent, or are all the ailments and the parent all that they seem? The girl still has some spirit and seems determined to live her life so when she’s out in town why did she mysteriously and suddenly die? The plot deepens when another young girl draws similarities behind coincidence.
I loved the pace of the story with a few red herrings along the way. The subject matter and food for thought were also good. The plot was ever so slightly over the edge of believability for me but it was still a page turner and definitely worth a read.

This book of mystery and intrigue…secrets and red herrings…murder and mayhem…family and friends…broken girls..sad story…Trying to discern the ending is difficult. Actually, difficult to read…from Netgalley.

Broken Girls is a well-written crime thriller with a clever storyline and surprises I didn't expect. I also enjoyed the personal relationships of Detective Jack Kent. I found all of the characters in this book interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed this story!

I read the Broken Girls and the first book of the series to get a proper feel for this new series about DI Jack Kent. The actual police procedural/mystery was a good story concerning the death of young girls possibly from Munchausen's by Proxy. Alongside this investigation Jack's sergeant Nadia is investigating and supporting a woman through court with a rape case. Jack is an expert climber and also bisexual. Although I fully accept some detail about this is necessary to fill out Jack's character I could happily have done with a lot less detail about both. All in all a solid 3 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own.

The second book in the DI Jack Kent series. Jack runs her team from the centre of Birmingham, so they are first call when the post mortem on a young girl after a sudden death in the Bull Ring, shows suspicious wrongdoings. The investigation leads the officers through a very tangled web of both mental and physical mis practice and the ordeal that the victims suffered. A sad read at times, with very dark undertones.

I read the first book and have the same thoughts regarding this one. Some good writing but a few odd areas. Again the climbing thread is there, and again not interesting enough to make it so important. Now the added mystery of the death of Jack’s father in a climbing fall, which she has always thought suspicious, is being thrown into the climbing mix.

A good plot, a dark but interesting storyline, better than the first book.

Thank you NetGalley and Storm.

My thoughts about Nicky Downes’s Broken Girls what can I say the twists and turns of the plot, the amazing level of detail, the superlative character development, the outstanding writing and and characters, all made Nicky Downes’s Broken Girls downright addictive. And analyzing a book this complicated certainly kept me out of trouble. Nicky Downes’s Broken Girls is more than just a straight forward murder mystery police procedural thriller, as it is thought provoking and speaks at so many levels, including the chance of getting too emotionally invested in the subject of one’s story. The story of Nicky Downes’s Broken Girls begins with When teenager Leia Thompson drops dead in a shopping mall of apparent natural causes, Detective Jaqueline ‘Jack’ Kent is the only one convinced something isn’t right. Why was Leia at the mall alone? Why are there scars – old and new all over her body. Visiting Leia’s mother, Jack quickly realises that she controlled every aspect of her daughter’s short life, home-schooling her and moving town every few months. At their house, Jack finds a room crammed with records detailing the teenager’s complex medical history right from the moment of her birth. A sinister picture starts to emerge in Jack’s mind – of a mother capable of hurting her own child.
When another girl dies in similar circumstances, the only thing that seems to connect the victims is their youth and frail health – and Leia’s estranged father. He emerges as their prime suspect until the girls’ autopsy reports come back with sinister similarities, and Jack’s attention turns to the doctors who treated them. Then somebody close to the case is found dead, and Jack starts to feel like she’s losing control. More will die if she doesn’t catch the person responsible soon. Can she work her way through this web of dark secrets and chilling motives before the killer strikes again. Overall Nicky Downes’s 2nd book in the Detective Jaqueline ‘Jack’ Kent series is is an intense, gripping and yet police procedural murder mystery searching thriller boosted with some remarkable characters. Certainly worth making time to read this one. I would like to say a big thank you to author writer Nicky Downes, and publishers Storm Publishing for kindly letting me read and review this brilliant thriller on netgalley

Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my approval to read and review this book.

DI Jack Kent along with DS Nadia Begum are back in an action packed thriller of a book! Jack starts to investigate the unexplained death of Leia and the case takes a bizarre and dark path. Did Leia die by the hands of her Mum, Gail, through Munchausen by Proxy? Or was she killed accidently? Nadia is mostly concentrating on the wrap up of the case from book 1, whcih she handles professionally. Jack sets about Leia's case with determination and follows the evidence to an unforseen sudden ending! The characters are well written and the plot is full of twists and turns. It was unputdownable and engrossing. I will recommend this book to other readers.
